    I loved a few times when Regal would work with luchadores in WCW and then someone would go to do a big dive or something to the floor, and he'd just..... walk to the side and they'd splat on the floor as Regal pointed to his head like "i'm not stupid." - so simple but so great

      @@paulineradcliffe9972 Agreed 👍👍, I not sure whereabouts I heard or read this,it may even of come from Regal in an interview,but it goes like this,Regal was working at The Pleasure Beach and there was prize money for members of the public to last a certain length of time in the ring Vs a wrestler (in this case Regal himself) In the mid 80's £100 was a lot of money,to some probably a week's wages, a lot of real hard cases obviously fancied their chances, would get tanked up,and love a scrap,Regal would be masked,and his bosses had an agreement with the local police that they handled business their way and they didn't need the police around, which basically meant Regal could kick the shit out of them and he wouldn't be in trouble/charged,as soon as a member of public stepped into the ring,Regal would boot them in the head,shoot on them,and hurl them over the top rope,job done 👍, Blackpool still is a tough place,but in mid 80's it was proper tough,to do what he did, bouncing, security work, wrestling,Regal is The Don,I don't think he'd back down from anyone!!

    In a lot of videos that have William Regal in them I find it interesting that there is a lot of comments by people saying that they didn't appreciate him that much when they were younger, but now that they're older they really like him.
    I didn't know about Regal when I was a kid, when I first saw him I was in my 20's watching WWF back in around 2002, I liked him a lot and still like him to this day, not only is he a good wrestler, but I also find him really funny and an entertaining character in the scenes that take place out of the ring, like in the locker room, his office, etc. I can't understand why kids wouldn't have cared for him that much.

  • @bigj6143
    @bigj6143 2 года назад +3

    You can't expect to continue to be creative with the same moves, same or similar spots, you have to allow time to sell, time for the psychological aspects to jell and grab the audience. How wrestlers feel about the abilities of others is actually secondary to what the audience thinks. It's good to respect all those you work or worked with. Wrestling overall now is fighting the redundancy in the business going forward, the compromise of all it's secrets over time, you need the selling, the psychological aspects, the build-up, and you also need to keep your audience anticipation for more in focus. It's a combined effort. Uptempo continually trying the same moves, high spots, it's like things happening in the blink of an eye. I guess it is similar to music. The hip hop rap beats get the the juices flowing but the soft mellow deliberate sounds kind of steals your heart. You can't have too much of the former. Wrestlers outfits, mannerisms, catch phrases, the way they carry themselves, conduct interviews/spots, it all feeds into the psychology of wrestling. Brock Lesnar, good performer, is made out now to be invincible. Not good. I will say more has recently gone into his makeup that presents him better. Regal had the look, he always did, and he made a nice addition plus he was a company guy, his wrestling lesson to Goldberg the boys still laugh at but Goldberg was VERY over so you just don't do that. You don't bite the hand that feeds you. Sad a man so talented gets remembered for that. Randy Orton struggles now with a couple things. Too many, way too many title reigns too quickly in the business, and being stale. Orton hasn't changed his persona at all so how many ways can you contimue to present a guy like this who went to the top so quickly? He is in tag teams now just marking time until they can stick him back into the title (singles) picture. Perhaps with Roman Reigns or Lesnar. Orton is good but a bit stale. Not his fault though really. Fans are ultimately going to decide if you are a main event guy or not. Often times they are not going to mesh with who Vince McMahon or the other performers think that guy (or gal) should be. Ric Flair's own daughter rose to success quickly. How does she stay fresh?

    I'm 52. I remember when I was a kid that if someone took a chair shot they were done for 3 weeks. Obviously either the wrestler was going on vacation or something, but the kayfabe part was "hit with a chair and he's basically dead".
    Then in the 90s it got to the point where someone would take 15 chair shots and win the match.

    A classic match that illustrates perfectly what Ric is saying about the difference between scripted and improvised matches came out of World Class in a match against Kevin Von Erich. Because they mic'd the ring, you can clearly hear Mr Flair calling the match. It is greatness; ESPECIALLY when Kevin yells out "He Broke MY NOSE". Absolutely believable stuff then. (And I still think Ric DID break his nose.)

    Compare the way wrestlers used to take Bob Backlund's atomic drop to modern wrestlers who get powerbombed through a table. It doesn't matter if the move actually hurts, or even if it initially looks painful. The only thing that matters is the reaction of the person receiving it. If the wrestler acts like it hurts, we have a combative struggle; if he performs a bigger move a minute later, we have cooperative gymnastics.

    Hell yeah, we want it to look real. Y'all watch a Ric Flair and Greg Valentine vs the Anderson Brothers from 1978. Those matches look real and are way more brutal than anything I've seen from ECW or Game Changer wrestling. I don't care really for the 15 or 20 high spots in a match like we seeing now. Hell nobody could take all that and it feel real. I'm saying somebody gets 3 tombstones and a Canadian destroyer followed up with super kicks then they kick out. That' lessens the match for me. Really don't need all those stupid looking dives and crap. One every once in a while. That looks real. Nothing I hate more than the 10 wrestlers outside the ring all waiting for somebody to back flip off the turnbuckles on em. Looks idiotic. How about for once somebody runs up and jerks thier asses down.

    Weird looking characters doing high speed gymnastics alone does not get fans invested in the matches. The ratings are so low in today's product because there's no good drama inspiring the matches, either. Spur of the moment, unclean ending matches are set up by a lot of boring schoolyard talk, not short intense promos. And good drama needs kayfabe. Yes, moves that should really have major effect indeed have no impact when they start something else 9 seconds later. Overkill with no meaningful result. WWE never knew how to use real men like Fit Finley or Steve Regal, BTW. I'm sorry to be so negative sounding, but watching pro wrestling was one of the few enjoyable things my whole family could do together, so I hate to see what's become of it for today's young families. There was more excitement and fan investment in a Raleigh Mid-Atlantic TV taping than in any WWE TV episode. I do think the product could be brought back to high quality again if people like Ric, Tully, Arn, Michaels, Cornette, Steamboat, Dillon, etc served as faculty, teaching a complete curriculum to today's young wrestlers. From a retired teacher.
