    Great video, thanks for sharing! I just purchased 4400PT which works perfect but I want to maintain it myself.

      Hi Mark My stairmaster is going to fast for the settings. So one feels like 5 and so on. I also can't find place to buy console that doesn't cost $600. I have gotten them before for $200 but now they say they discontinued. Can you help me thanks Terry Mullins

    I purchased one of these used and it seems to work great in lower resistances/inclines but once I go into steeper inclines the peddles sink. Can you give me some guidance on how I could fix this problem please and thank you.

    Mines not skipping but just falling like there’s not as much resistance. Is that the load resistor failing? It works then doesn’t randomly

      It could also be the alternator brushes. If it has the original alternator, the commutator in the alternator could be grooved.

    My left pedal seems to have a skip every so many steps. Would you say it’s the chain or left side drive sprocket?

    Mark- I have 4100 pt and the right pedal slides to the right on that bolt that runs through center of pedal. It forces the chain to also move to the right, rubbing against the flywheel, making a noise. Don't know what tool to use to get that pedal off.

    I have an issue with my, (wired not battery powered) StairMaster 4000 PT where the resistance is inconsistent with the console. If it is at level 3 and the program drops it to a higher resistance, (Slower pedals) it will often go much faster and if I let the pedals go all the way to the bottom and stop for a couple of seconds the pedals will go to the proper resistance. Could you tell me what the likely problem might be and how I can repair it? Thank you so much for your videos.

    • @knifetoenail
      @knifetoenail  4 года назад +1

      dirtwfox start with the alternator brushes. If they get short sometimes stairmaster can go faster than what it supposed too

    What is the problem if the lower pully of the belt assembly is making a tick-tick-tick noise like the second hand of a watch (sometime sit does some it does not )?
    Is the lower pully like a drive shaft coming out of an oil filled gear box where the drive chain provides torque on one side and converts it to torque on the pulley side ?

    • @knifetoenail
      @knifetoenail  2 года назад

      Hmmm. Could be the alternator bearings. Although most of the time it’s normally grinding from the alternator if it’s a bearing. Take out the brushes, then step on the machine and see if the noise goes away. If it goes away check the commentator there may be a segment that has fallen and it clicks every time it passes the brush. Another question for you does the sound speed up and slow down as you speed up and slow down? Okay might not be the Connie tater I just looked at my video of the alternator fast And faster, and the commutator is a smooth commutator without segments so I might be counting that out, although the brushes if they’re short they could be clicking back-and-forth

      @@knifetoenail . This will sound strange but I just stair stepped for 8 minutes trying to get it to make the ticking sound but got nothing , Previously the ticking began with immediately of within 1 minute of starting .
      I would have to listen while someone else stairsteps but it sounds like the ticking is coming from the lower gear box pulley
      also once those ticking starts something bad happens after a few minutes .Last time it was a feeling of extreme bumpiness in the pedal accompanied by audible popping
      Right now I've got the pedals off and the shafts look smooth although they were very dry
      also during my 8 minutes at levels 1-15 I got no bumpiness in the pedals where are the previous episode it seemed like the bearings were tearing up with each step
      im beginning to suspect the trouble is electrical not mechanical
      although my drive chain seems very loose and Im thinking of ordering a new one .But why would it be so bumpy one time and absolutely smooth for 8 minutes if it were the drive chain or anything mechanical?
      since its intermittent tI suspect the electronic resistance system

    Thanks for the solid info.. gonna order hub assy for our 4200...right pedal simply loses ALL resistance and drops to floor quickly after 3 to 7 ish "stroke cycles"..... I'm hoping/figuring must be failure in that sprocket hub you've elaborated on? Incidentally, what sort of product should I use for lubricating chain!? Thanks ahead!!😁

    Great video thank you. My steps kept skipping. Took apart and cleaned- drive chain looked like it had an extra link- too much sag! A new chain should do the trick. Mike

    • @knifetoenail
      @knifetoenail  3 года назад

      Yeah, a lot of people think that. If you get a new chain it it has the same lag that’s normal. You can adjust it a little bit by spinning the drive hub flanges. They are eccentric

    Hi Mark, I was given a 4200PT that one of the pedals does not return to position after pushing down, but I can pull back up to place with my foot and it does stay. It’s like something isn’t lubed up well. I have checked the spring and it does not seem “sprung” and the chain is good. After WD40’ing a few places it returns about halfway. Can you tell me what part I need to focus on? I know WD40 isn’t going to fix it long term I was just trying to figure out what part allows the return before I started taking it apart for grease. It’s the right pedal. Everything else functions correctly on the machine, and it does work if I pull it up with my foot each time. Who wants to do that, though?

    Hi Mark. Great video. I have a Stairmaster 4000PT that has started squeaking or squealing on the right down stroke. I can shift my weight back and it stops. Any ideas? Do I have a belt problem or should I try and lubricate something? Thank you in advance.

    • @knifetoenail
      @knifetoenail  6 лет назад

      It depends on if its a short squeak or long squeak. Short squeaks could be the shaft that goes through the pedal or the bolt at the top of the pedal that attaches the level arm. Can you do a video.

    Have you ever worked on tectrix climbers with the cables instead of chains?My pedals seem to be slipping causing them to drop making a loud noise.

    • @knifetoenail
      @knifetoenail  4 года назад

      The cables wraparound a drive sprocket that drive sprocket bearings could be bad

    My machine was making a loud noise and now the pedals will NOT move even after I enter my workout etc. Is there a safety or something that prevents the pedals from moving?

    • @knifetoenail
      @knifetoenail  6 лет назад

      Julie Lyons hi, you may be having an issue with the transmission or the drive hub bearings. If you're not very mechanical I would suggest getting a service tech.

    Mark, I heard loud screeching noises coming from my stairmaster while in use then all of a sudden the steps got stuck in the upright position and will not move and I can't program a workout. Any idea what it can be?

    Hey Mark...i have a lifestep 5500...i cant find any videos on it but found plenty of your videos.. everything lights up and works but the resistance is weird...it has a 1-12 level...on manual, level 6-12 feels like nothing 1 sometimes has resistance 2-4 has varying resistance....what could that be ?? Im going to try emailing you also...and thank you

    • @knifetoenail
      @knifetoenail  7 лет назад +1

      Hi, Chances are good the large pivot bushing at the bottom of the pedal arm is worn. You will need a new pedal arm or someone who can press out the old one and press in the new one.
