Li-Fi looks to be yet another disruptive technology, this time in communication. Just to clarify, Li-Fi will probably work alongside Wi-Fi and not replace it completely. Though with a download speed of 18 movies in one second, it's a lot faster! Enjoy the video.
+SuperSaf TV Why is it very interesting? All we got out of this was how to receive data. Not in any way shape or form how the device communicates back. How would we upload to the lightbulb? How would we have to reconfigure it? We are talking about optical fiber through the air... That's not terribly interesting if the communication is mostly 1 directional. I'm not drilling holes in the ceiling to wire these things up... even if I did the wires would limit throughput, etc...

Well... I wouldn't say it's a lie, it just seems really inconvenient. Wi-Fi IS good exactly because it goes through walls and in all directions. I can't really imagine any circumstance where Li-Fi is usable, except for lab conditions. For a stationary pc - if you can run a wire for Li-Fi to a nearest lamp, you can probably just run wired connection to that pc anyway. For a laptop or phone - any obstruction, or angle change has non-illusory chance to mess up connection. So, it's not "a lie", it's just... Why?

I like that wifi goes through walls, kind of its main selling point is that it's not typically hindered by physical obstructions, meaning you have more freedom while still being connected.
There is also the problem of you'r device sending the data back , the internet is a 2 way street ! you will need light's and receptors everywhere in the room and a big light on you'r device to send the data back ! it's a stupid idea , and stupid people will take the fishbait and invest in this , so sad !
yeah that's an advantage in wifi but, it also is a demerit for security reasons, as out of your room any one can access, and hack it and can steal your information, this, property of being blocked by an opaque surface serves as a merit in lifi when you are more concerned about privacy, on addition radio waves used for wifi are harmful which limits it's usability in radiation sensitive areas, like hospitals, aeroplanes, nuclear power plants. . .
i have that same question. and then there is the line of sight issue. its just like sending internet via lasers. one potential option i have just thought of is to have multiple sensors around a room, and the mobile device will be able to emit light signal in any orientation, because in nearly every plane, a sensor would be able to capture the signal. and to further that, all street lamps could be converted to send/receive signals. so it wouldn't be a long distance interface, but more like a localized net, meant for high traffic zones. but, it is cheap. u just need a modified modem and led lamps for the transmission, and then receiver sensors for the reception. then connect to the net. the main advantage would be the speed, and that would only really be useful if 20 people want to live stream 4k at the same time in the same place.
Only the visible light spectrum theoretical bandwidth today is around 100 ZB/s. That's all 2015 year world data traffic times 100, but in a second!!! If you leave 2 of the 7 visible colors reserved for uplink it's more than enough
biggest problem with this - communication must be bidirectional, that means light bulbs will have to have ability not only to emit light, but also to receive; handset devices will have to have to have not only an "eye" to receive the light, but also a bulb on itself (not necessarily visible light bulb, maybe IR or UV) and that bulb must be quite powerful in order for it's beams to bounce off walls and floors.

Comcast has Gigabit Pro they're offering 3Gbps actually. 2Gbps for the wired, and 1Gbps for wireless. It's a pretty cool offering, but IC what you mean 10Gbps is pretty fast. Fast enough to feed video to a small town.
Speed doesn't only depend on your Wifi, Gr-Fi or any other Lifi thing, It depends on your TCP/IP link speed too. Right now, Wifi with 802.11ac feature we can get max 1Gbps, and In future (means 1-2 years only) It will rise to more speed (ideally 10Gbps) and So, WiFi is very much mature and progressive thing. Nobody easily can replace it.
I just looked at a bunch of Amazon reviews. This is still in it's early stages. Some of the reviews were hard to understand (especially if you're not a tech person), but what I gathered was that people's bulbs were going out, this required some kind of subscription for "additional features" and they're far more expensive than one would expect- considering the aim is to change the world. Li-Fi is a cool concept, but i'll wait a bit longer...
If WiFi came after LiFi, WiFi would be dubbed revolutionary. It's invisible, you can work in dark or in bright light. It can pass through objects and bounce off walls, no direct line of sight required. Uses much less energy, any device can be made into hotspot... and more.

Arioch IV Who said anything about another high-speed network? All you need to exchange is timing information on a periodic basis for TDMA signaling. You could achieve that with simple IEEE 802.15.4 (a.k.a. IoT) radios. As for transmitting from receiving devices, especially on mobile handsets, I'd imagine one could modulate the LED backlight on LCD-based displays or directly on AMOLED-based ones. If that turns out to be insufficient (not enough intensity), OEMs could integrate a dedicated Li-Fi LED array somewhere near the top of the device like some phones already do for IR blasters. It also doesn't have to be visible light, just invisible IR so as not to be totally annoying to nearby users.
lifi requires an unobstructed line of sight to function, so the connected devices have to be positioned in a certain way and can't really be moved. at this point, you might as well use ethernet.
But how do you upload using this? Using normal wi-fi? EDIT: Thinking about it again, I don't think a phone will be able to upload using li-fi, and it's the data you send (searches, passwords, naked selfies, bank details etc.) that needs to be protected more than downloads. So I just can't see how this can be more secure than wi-fi.
I'm thinking that there would just need to be a receiver and your phone would have an LED display (so amoled and such). The phone would need the ability to pulse incredibly quickly which would be done using MEMS (unless current technology can already switch fast enough).

Instances where Lie-Fi simply won't work: Phone in your pocket. Any device that doesn't have a special LED specifically made for Li-Fi (internet is a two-way communication). (not to mention enormous battery consumption) Any time that your device doesn't have direct line of sight to the light source (which is most of the time). You could be watching your video/playing your online game/downloading, and then someone walks in front of your computer, and suddenly you're disconnected from the internet. This technology would be so temperamental that it's simply not worth it.

Some evil forces are holding it back no doubt. Cause Wi-fi is dangerous to living things and they want to keep it around as long as they can. Wi-fi can be weaponized and used for population control.
All electromagnetic waves (radio, light etc) move at the same speed in air... the speed of light. The difference is the frequency of the wave, that is how many peaks and troughs in a second. Each peak and trough can be used to signal on/off or digital states depending on the translators. On/off is binary, the basis of electronic communication, and a single "bit". So, the higher the frequency, the more bits per second can be transmitted. The issue isn't the transfer medium, it's the translators on either end. Mainstream WiFi uses 2.4GHz and 5GHz signals... which have the theoretical maximum throughput of 2.4 Gigabits per second and 5 Gigabits per second. Yes, LiFi can reach HUNDREDS of Gigabits per second in testing, but the translators on either end are still the bottleneck. Think of it as your water supply to your house. The very large mains water pipeline running through the neighbourhood does gigalitres of water per hour. But, your tap can only do tens of litres per hour.
Maybe it just me, but don't people typically use the internet OUTSIDE of their pockets? Okay, nvm. I think you have a point, you wouldn't be able to take skype calls, listen to music with your phone in your pocket etc.

So many fucking issues with this. UHF penetration, attenuation, reliability, interference to name a few. There's a reason IF is confined to straight line beam systems.
He puts his hand between the receiver and the light source and the signal is blocked. That's not a success. Now, were he to put his hand between them and have the receiver still be able to detect the pulses from ambient light I may consider that a success. Basically, you have to have the optics of the receiver in direct LOS to the source for this to work. That's not a step up from Wi-Fi.

There's 2 big flaws with this: 1. Whats the use of a 100x faster than wi-fi connection when its just between your device and your modem? your internet speed wont get any faster from this, you wont download be able to download those 18 1.5gb movies in one second because your internet cable is not capable of those speeds, neither does your hard drive. But ok, lets say they solve the slow hard drive and internet cable problem by lets say transmitting data using quantum entanglement(if you had technology like this, you wouldnt even need a Li-Fi, but lets ignore this for the sake of argument) 2. You can receive data at 100x speed, but to receive date, you first need to send out a request for that data, and how are you going to do that? you will still need Wi-Fi for that, or some other type of connection, so now you need to manage 2 types of connections instead of just one, Li-Fi and Wi-Fi, and since Wi-Fi is slow, things like live streaming or playing online games or doing a video call will still be slow, you will need to send that data out somehow you know, so what if the other person can receive it at 100x speed, when you can only send it at 1x speed. And finally, how will this no longer be an obstacle for the average user? they will still need to follow the same access point discovery and connection procedures as they do with Wi-Fi, there's still gonna be security keys and a need to setup a network, it wont run on magic.
game exe #2 is solved already, you just need to use a different set of colours for transmission (could be imperceptible). This isn't like hyperloop, which has zero potential of being economical. #1 makes it useless for most consumers, but it could be great for business.
It's not because this technology is not acclimated with the other components of communication technologies that you should automatically consider it unpractical : maybe we should create better cable work instead of dismissing LiFi ! :p Today, LiFi uses infrared to create the signal from your device to the LED emitter, so problem solved ^^ On an other note, this technology is actually very practical : it's a game changer for hospitals, no radio wave and yet connection in any room. Do your own research, it works just as well ! ;)
It's not Omni directional, which makes it a burden having to create a whole infer structure to have Li-Fi. Where as WI-FI works everywhere and passes through walls, making it better for ease of use, instead of having lights every few feet to keep you phone running. This Edison Vs. Tesla. Edison wanted higher power but need a giant infer structure to work, but Tesla won.
Your brain and body says Hi, too. I would rather have light emitting, flickering lamp around my couch, where I can sit and browse, than a constant flow of 2.4Ghz radio frequency radiation.
LIFI would only provide a data stream in one direction (download), so you still need an upload path. A WIFI or WIMAX or LTE uplink could provide for that. Still an improvement overall... fiber > LIFI in, WIFI/WIMAX > whatever out.
he showed a huge flaw of Li-Fi right when he put his hand in front of the light, we can't access the internet if it is blocked by obstructions, you would need to make sure your device was exposed to the light, plus that you'd need multiple lights for multiple rooms, we don't need li-fi-, wi-fi is good as it is, no need to change it.
ThatBulgarian Its actually a Yes and a No. Yes... Because of the lower frequency and longer lamda sound can travel more flexible and can go further than light. Whereas, due to the higher frequency light can't penetrate an object such as walls. But it's undeniable that light can transfer faster data than sound since the frequency is higher.
From my experience on video streaming;when data is exchanged via a video format (depending on the size of the video and speed of the data connection) some part of the video is loaded already,usually more than 2 minutes. What does this mean? So,covering a light bulb and stopping the sensor from calculating the flicking binary lights tingy shouldn't stop the video from playing. To me,that was just a remote control programmed with a simple if statement. If (flicking light is detected) {play video;} else {pause;}. I am not saying LIFI doesn't exist. All i'm pointing out is,that video presentation is not convincing enough to deserve the hand clap it got.

this would be really useless. first off it doesnt matter how fast this light bulb can transfer data to a laptop, its still limited to your internet service provider and if you have fiber optic or not. and the light would not be able to pass through walls and would only work when your phone or laptop was in direct veiw of the lightbulb. which means its not as portable as wifi. to get faster wifi you can just get 802.11 ac wifi which is up to 900mbps of data from 1 router but its all up to your internet service provider and if you actually get that kind of speed to begin with
light and radiowaves are both line of sight, meaning neither of them can pass through walls. The only way it "appears' to pass through walls is because it is exiting the router in a spherical shape meaning it bounces off the wall at every possible angle allowing it to reach other rooms and even other houses.

+SuperSaf TV Why is it very interesting? All we got out of this was how to receive data. Not in any way shape or form how the device communicates back. How would we upload to the lightbulb? How would we have to reconfigure it?
We are talking about optical fiber through the air... That's not terribly interesting if the communication is mostly 1 directional. I'm not drilling holes in the ceiling to wire these things up... even if I did the wires would limit throughput, etc...
So you want optic fibre without the cable. The cable is there for a reason: it's more stable.

Cody Nemo, in 1999 the UK considered 33k more than adequate, 4mb isn't anywhere near the requirement for multiple devices streaming 4k in house hold (e.g 3x TVS + 4x hand held), nevermind taking into account multiple devices 4k+ uploads requirements.
What if they build a device that you could mount on your console or laptop that produces the light, like a stick on flashlight, problem solved.

Well... I wouldn't say it's a lie, it just seems really inconvenient. Wi-Fi IS good exactly because it goes through walls and in all directions. I can't really imagine any circumstance where Li-Fi is usable, except for lab conditions. For a stationary pc - if you can run a wire for Li-Fi to a nearest lamp, you can probably just run wired connection to that pc anyway. For a laptop or phone - any obstruction, or angle change has non-illusory chance to mess up connection.
So, it's not "a lie", it's just... Why?

I like that wifi goes through walls, kind of its main selling point is that it's not typically hindered by physical obstructions, meaning you have more freedom while still being connected.
This would be so impractical. The benefit of radio is that it passes through surfaces. ANYTHING opaque would stop visible light Internet...

one potential option i have just thought of is to have multiple sensors around a room, and the mobile device will be able to emit light signal in any orientation, because in nearly every plane, a sensor would be able to capture the signal.
and to further that, all street lamps could be converted to send/receive signals. so it wouldn't be a long distance interface, but more like a localized net, meant for high traffic zones. but, it is cheap. u just need a modified modem and led lamps for the transmission, and then receiver sensors for the reception. then connect to the net.
the main advantage would be the speed, and that would only really be useful if 20 people want to live stream 4k at the same time in the same place.

biggest problem with this - communication must be bidirectional, that means light bulbs will have to have ability not only to emit light, but also to receive; handset devices will have to have to have not only an "eye" to receive the light, but also a bulb on itself (not necessarily visible light bulb, maybe IR or UV) and that bulb must be quite powerful in order for it's beams to bounce off walls and floors.

Comcast has Gigabit Pro they're offering 3Gbps actually. 2Gbps for the wired, and 1Gbps for wireless. It's a pretty cool offering, but IC what you mean 10Gbps is pretty fast. Fast enough to feed video to a small town.
Speed doesn't only depend on your Wifi, Gr-Fi or any other Lifi thing, It depends on your TCP/IP link speed too. Right now, Wifi with 802.11ac feature we can get max 1Gbps, and In future (means 1-2 years only) It will rise to more speed (ideally 10Gbps) and So, WiFi is very much mature and progressive thing. Nobody easily can replace it.
I just looked at a bunch of Amazon reviews. This is still in it's early stages. Some of the reviews were hard to understand (especially if you're not a tech person), but what I gathered was that people's bulbs were going out, this required some kind of subscription for "additional features" and they're far more expensive than one would expect- considering the aim is to change the world. Li-Fi is a cool concept, but i'll wait a bit longer...

Arioch IV Who said anything about another high-speed network? All you need to exchange is timing information on a periodic basis for TDMA signaling. You could achieve that with simple IEEE 802.15.4 (a.k.a. IoT) radios. As for transmitting from receiving devices, especially on mobile handsets, I'd imagine one could modulate the LED backlight on LCD-based displays or directly on AMOLED-based ones. If that turns out to be insufficient (not enough intensity), OEMs could integrate a dedicated Li-Fi LED array somewhere near the top of the device like some phones already do for IR blasters. It also doesn't have to be visible light, just invisible IR so as not to be totally annoying to nearby users.
I'm watching this 6 years later and it's the first time I know about LiFi...something has gone wrong....
lifi requires an unobstructed line of sight to function, so the connected devices have to be positioned in a certain way and can't really be moved. at this point, you might as well use ethernet.

EDIT: Thinking about it again, I don't think a phone will be able to upload using li-fi, and it's the data you send (searches, passwords, naked selfies, bank details etc.) that needs to be protected more than downloads. So I just can't see how this can be more secure than wi-fi.
I'm thinking that there would just need to be a receiver and your phone would have an LED display (so amoled and such). The phone would need the ability to pulse incredibly quickly which would be done using MEMS (unless current technology can already switch fast enough).

Instances where Lie-Fi simply won't work:
Phone in your pocket.
Any device that doesn't have a special LED specifically made for Li-Fi (internet is a two-way communication). (not to mention enormous battery consumption)
Any time that your device doesn't have direct line of sight to the light source (which is most of the time).
You could be watching your video/playing your online game/downloading, and then someone walks in front of your computer, and suddenly you're disconnected from the internet. This technology would be so temperamental that it's simply not worth it.

All electromagnetic waves (radio, light etc) move at the same speed in air... the speed of light. The difference is the frequency of the wave, that is how many peaks and troughs in a second. Each peak and trough can be used to signal on/off or digital states depending on the translators. On/off is binary, the basis of electronic communication, and a single "bit". So, the higher the frequency, the more bits per second can be transmitted. The issue isn't the transfer medium, it's the translators on either end. Mainstream WiFi uses 2.4GHz and 5GHz signals... which have the theoretical maximum throughput of 2.4 Gigabits per second and 5 Gigabits per second. Yes, LiFi can reach HUNDREDS of Gigabits per second in testing, but the translators on either end are still the bottleneck.
Think of it as your water supply to your house. The very large mains water pipeline running through the neighbourhood does gigalitres of water per hour. But, your tap can only do tens of litres per hour.

You understand how (download and upload kb/second) concept right? as you can see, the bulb cant receive your uploaded data since there is other way to do it.

This tech works in a very specific and rare environment. It has all the disadvantages of optic cable and wifi + can't do anything withh walls or coners.
This tech is too sensitive. The reason we use radio signals is because it is a more robust system.

There's 2 big flaws with this:
1. Whats the use of a 100x faster than wi-fi connection when its just between your device and your modem? your internet speed wont get any faster from this, you wont download be able to download those 18 1.5gb movies in one second because your internet cable is not capable of those speeds, neither does your hard drive.
But ok, lets say they solve the slow hard drive and internet cable problem by lets say transmitting data using quantum entanglement(if you had technology like this, you wouldnt even need a Li-Fi, but lets ignore this for the sake of argument)
2. You can receive data at 100x speed, but to receive date, you first need to send out a request for that data, and how are you going to do that? you will still need Wi-Fi for that, or some other type of connection, so now you need to manage 2 types of connections instead of just one, Li-Fi and Wi-Fi, and since Wi-Fi is slow, things like live streaming or playing online games or doing a video call will still be slow, you will need to send that data out somehow you know, so what if the other person can receive it at 100x speed, when you can only send it at 1x speed.
And finally, how will this no longer be an obstacle for the average user? they will still need to follow the same access point discovery and connection procedures as they do with Wi-Fi, there's still gonna be security keys and a need to setup a network, it wont run on magic.
game exe #2 is solved already, you just need to use a different set of colours for transmission (could be imperceptible).
This isn't like hyperloop, which has zero potential of being economical. #1 makes it useless for most consumers, but it could be great for business.
It's not because this technology is not acclimated with the other components of communication technologies that you should automatically consider it unpractical : maybe we should create better cable work instead of dismissing LiFi ! :p
Today, LiFi uses infrared to create the signal from your device to the LED emitter, so problem solved ^^
On an other note, this technology is actually very practical : it's a game changer for hospitals, no radio wave and yet connection in any room.

It's not Omni directional, which makes it a burden having to create a whole infer structure to have Li-Fi. Where as WI-FI works everywhere and passes through walls, making it better for ease of use, instead of having lights every few feet to keep you phone running.

Your brain and body says Hi, too. I would rather have light emitting, flickering lamp around my couch, where I can sit and browse, than a constant flow of 2.4Ghz radio frequency radiation.
LIFI would only provide a data stream in one direction (download), so you still need an upload path. A WIFI or WIMAX or LTE uplink could provide for that. Still an improvement overall... fiber > LIFI in, WIFI/WIMAX > whatever out.
he showed a huge flaw of Li-Fi right when he put his hand in front of the light, we can't access the internet if it is blocked by obstructions, you would need to make sure your device was exposed to the light, plus that you'd need multiple lights for multiple rooms, we don't need li-fi-, wi-fi is good as it is, no need to change it.

ThatBulgarian Its actually a Yes and a No. Yes... Because of the lower frequency and longer lamda sound can travel more flexible and can go further than light. Whereas, due to the higher frequency light can't penetrate an object such as walls. But it's undeniable that light can transfer faster data than sound since the frequency is higher.

From my experience on video streaming;when data is exchanged via a video format (depending on the size of the video and speed of the data connection) some part of the video is loaded already,usually more than 2 minutes. What does this mean? So,covering a light bulb and stopping the sensor from calculating the flicking binary lights tingy shouldn't stop the video from playing. To me,that was just a remote control programmed with a simple if statement. If (flicking light is detected) {play video;} else {pause;}. I am not saying LIFI doesn't exist. All i'm pointing out is,that video presentation is not convincing enough to deserve the hand clap it got.
+David King what your refuring to is call the video buffer, and i was thinking the same thing, then i thougth maybe they just turned the buffer off. But if so he should have stated that: "this is a streeming video with no buffer" otherwize it looks a lot more like what you've discribed
This is a terrible idea. Imagine having to always adjusting the position of your phone because you are having bad connection because you are blocking the light.

IR and visible light are two different parts of the spectrum.
this would be really useless. first off it doesnt matter how fast this light bulb can transfer data to a laptop, its still limited to your internet service provider and if you have fiber optic or not.
and the light would not be able to pass through walls and would only work when your phone or laptop was in direct veiw of the lightbulb. which means its not as portable as wifi. to get faster wifi you can just get 802.11 ac wifi which is up to 900mbps of data from 1 router but its all up to your internet service provider and if you actually get that kind of speed to begin with

light and radiowaves are both line of sight, meaning neither of them can pass through walls. The only way it "appears' to pass through walls is because it is exiting the router in a spherical shape meaning it bounces off the wall at every possible angle allowing it to reach other rooms and even other houses.
