    ALWAYS try your best to match one for one from your original wiring to the Nest. Here are the connectors explained:
    RED=Powers (normally) and goes into Rh or Rc and sometimes has a jumper to connect the two (if your original had a jumper, nest needs one to)
    Green=Fan (normally) and should go into G
    Yellow=Cool/Air (A/C) (normally) and usually goes into Y1
    Blue=Common (normally) and is used for things that have home automation and goes into C
    White=Heat (normally) central heating unit can also need a black wire and you might also have a heat pump, but white goes into W1 normally
    Orange=heat pump (normally) and goes into O/B above Rc
    Black=staged heat (normally) and goes into * (star connector) also black normally goes into the * Star connector
    Your system’s wiring may or may not need to use the Nest thermostat’s star connector, so you should always use the compatibility checker to get a custom wiring diagram before connecting any wires to the star connector.
    Nest Learning Thermostats and the Nest Thermostat E use the star connector a bit differently and support different wires and system features.

    Let me add a little to those that have heating and cooling in the same unit hvac. I had red, dark blue, white, black and green wires. The people on nest helped me a lot what they told me to do was to plug the white wire to Y1 and the black wire to OB, and of course the rest of the cables. Really great service!

    My Air handler in in the attic and has an overflow control for the drip pan. The two lines coming off the overflow control; one to the red which connect to Rc for power the other was connect to the back line to the thermostat however the black line is not connect to the Nest. Should the black line be connected to the * connection on the nest so the if water in the drip pan get to high the nest would turn off the unit?

      Did you take a picture of your previous setup like I suggest on the video? A lot of times builders or older homes have different wires. For example a yellow wire that's actually a power red wire... that's why it's critical to look at your previous setup and take a picture. If you have an upstairs, see if you can go up there and take a picture of that one.
      If you look at the bottom of the video in the Description area. I have several images with wire diagrams that might help as well.

    Zachus this is true in my case. Help the nest wire connection ports don't allow for 2 wires to be placed in "one" whole. How in the world do I set up the "jumper"?

      It should be blue and it's called a common wire. It for automated devices. How old is your house? You might have to get an A/C guy to run one for you. Look down in the comments, I specify all the wires and what they are for. Hope this helps

  • @magfednova3691
    @magfednova3691 6 лет назад +2

    Dude... you have a very soothing voice :D. Anyways, I just ordered a g3 nest but what I'm confused about is, on my current thermostat (Honeywell t87f), blue wire is connected to Rh and Red to Rc. Everything else is proper. So I guess my question is, should I use the same wire config on the nest g3 or should I put blue to C and keep R on Rc? Also, it's for an oil heating system.

    • @Zachus
      @Zachus  6 лет назад +1

      Recommendation is always to keep the wires the same, so if blue is power on honeywell then keep it to Rh, it'll tell you when it runs its test if anything is wrong. It could be your builder put in the wrong color wire or something but always match it as best as possible. I've done 3 installs now, 2 with the 3rd gen and 1 with the new thermostat e and they varied a little for sure, you can see that video as well. Hope this helps, thanks so much for watching

    Hey man, thanks for explaining wires. So, in the manual of the Thermostat E, it says if I have Rh and Rc I have dual transformer system, and it won’t be compatible with my Thermostat, and I have to get the more expensive one (learning), this is misleading since I did some research and compatibility check and it was compatible. Anyways, I have an Rh and Rc jumper, and the red is connected to the Rh, I also have a white wire connected to the W. Do you know if the Thermostat I bought is compatible?

  • @themod0518

    I'm trying to use mine on a Quadra-Fire Santa Fe. It only has two wires, a Red and White. The red is on the Rh port and the white is in the W1 port. So I put them into the same spots on the Nest. As soon as power is supplied. The stove turns on and begins feeding. Before the Nest has even fully booted up. The stove turns on and burns at full power. Once the Nest boots up, no matter what setting you put it on. On, Off, Eco, Heat up, Heat down, etc doesn't matter. The stove just continues to burn on full power. I've contacted Nest support and all they did was send me a new base with the same issues. Contacted a Nest Authorized repair man and he mentioned needing a "C" Common Wire. What's your take on this? I was under the impression that the "C" powered the Nest because the 2 wire Stove doesn't supply enough power. But both are turned on and Nest claims it can run with only the 2 wires.

    • @Zachus
      @Zachus  6 лет назад

      This could mean that whoever installed your previous thermostat put the wrong colors in for different things. Did you take a picture or remember where the wires are from the previous thermostat to match them over? If not you may have to get a professional to check it out. If you have a neighbor that has the same setup, go look at theirs. You should be able to see on any thermostat what the code is and match it over the Nest. Hope this helps

    • @Zachus
      @Zachus  4 года назад

      Did you take a picture of your original setup before you uninstalled it? If so look back at that and see which wire was connected to Y. If not, do you have an upstairs, that is still setup like the old one, hopefully so and you can go take a picture of it. Often, especially in older homes, construction/builder/installers don't always follow the color rules and take short cuts. That's why I always recommend a picture before you take it off so you know where everything was and what color was on what.
      If you have AC then you have a white for Y but it might not be yellow. Under the video in the description there is more details about colors and a picture. If all other wires but one are accounted for, you might be good to test that one but carefully at your own risk.

      Do you have an A/C Air Condition Cooling Unit? If so then as I said in the video and the description under the video be sure to take pictures of your old unit before taking it apart because sometimes they don't use the right colors when building, especially in older houses and you need to know what Y goes to from the old unit you can tell what wire is your 'yellow' wire. Hope this helps
      (under the video in the description, I list out all the color wires and what they are and a picture diagram so you can see it)

      I'm sorry to give you bad news but no smart home or connected home devices that are wired work without a blue common wire known as the C Wire. You can try it but from all I've read it will not work.
