In today's episode, we're exploring Wonderland Eurasia, also known as Ankapark.
Opened in March 2019, the park has 17 rollercoasters, the second-most worldwide. However, the extent of the problems affecting the park became apparent very quickly. Two days after the park opened, a train got stuck on top of a roller coaster, and the passengers were forced to leave the merry-go-round on foot.
Eventually, less than a year after its opening, in February 2020, the park could not pay its 180 thousand dollars accumulated electricity debt. The electricity of the park was cut off, leaving the park closed for good.
The failure is total. 750 million dollars to realize this extravagant mega-project are thrown in the trash.
Wonderland Eurasia has now lowered the curtain, leaving rusting expensive statues and rides and a strong sense of bitterness in place. What was supposed to become a symbol of pride for Turkey, has become a symbol of the mismanagement and hubris of some officials of the presidential party.
Today, we venture our way inside Wonderland and give you an exclusive peek of this gigantic deserted amusement park.

I live in Ohio, the home of Cedar Point and Kings Island seeing this just hurts my heart as someone who has spent many days of my life at amusement parks. You didn't just turn this into an explore but a feature length documentary ... something for you to really consider. With your knowledge of abandoned places you would have a heck of a documentary into the circumstances that allow these majestic homes and locales to crumble into dust. Just this series alone shows the expansive use of wasted commercialism that has affected the world globally as humans strive at exponential rates for - bigger, better, and more more more. As someone who has watched you from the beginning, you have an incredible gift for this Maureno, not just in the videography but in the storytelling and drama. Companies like National Geographic should be knocking on your door to do work for them.

Living in ohio, you should look into Ohio’s massive history of former amusement parks. There used to be parks in canton, Akron, all over the state. Especially the history and sad closing of Geuaga Lake. I grew up in the Akron Canton area and lived down the street from where Myers Lake amusement park was, had season passes to bothe Sea World and GL. I never got to experience all the local parts of the long ago past sadly.

I am so sorry that this is just a memory now. Do you mind if I ask you what you might know about the politics and mismanagement that caused this 750 MILLION dollar theme park to end up closed? Or did the government hush it up? Because I'm dead certain it took more than just an unpaid $180k electricity bill and a few debts to close this park down. I wonder how you and other local people must feel about it? It must be a strange and sinking feeling to be given the most amazing opportunity to come and play in the world's biggest and most incredible theme park...only to have it all taken away again! Especially when everyone knows that it cost three quarters of a billion dollars - and it's all been wasted. It doesn't make any sense.. And I am hoping that if there IS any sense to be made of it, that you would please help us to understand? Thank you kindly. Without a fuller understanding of what happened, all I am able to deduce is that politics &/or the government is somehow ultimately responsible for some massive failure to back up the success for the sheer amount of investment that has gone into this park? But I'd much prefer not to place any blame where there is none. Information makes all the difference. Thank you for your kind reply!

I can see why the park failed. Such a place would need to serve millions of people every year in order to make enough to cover expenses. That would mean a huge tourist business. As a dictatorship, Turkey already had a poor reputation as a vacation spot. Hi Maureno and Carter,
I absolutely cannot believe yours and Carter's explorations in Turkey.. I thought that the "cut & paste Disney mansions" and nearby "cut n paste village" were the ultimate in financial waste - but THIS!! I'm gobsmacked speechless at the sheer amount of waste you've exposed in this country!
I always love your passion and kind, respectful, and very sweet nature that always shines through - and your edits are first class too. I always find myself holding my breath until you're safely out.. I very much appreciate your hard work and the high risks you've taken to bring us this series. Thank you so very much. (I don't know how I missed this epic vid before!)
And just when I think you've brought us the ultimate exploration ever - you manage to ace them all!
What is glaringly obvious is the sheer amount of financial waste in this country! There's something inherently wrong with this. Anywhere else, when so much money has been invested in your country, the government will bend over backwards to ensure that the doors to a huge business stay open - because when the gates are closed everyone loses, including the government! For an investment of THIS SCALE... OMG - surely an epic failure on this scale is a stain on the government that allowed it. Bail-out funds can always be repaid later on down the track, and even an interest-free government loan to keep them liquid and viable is smarter and preferable to such epic failure on your turf! Surely even an outright bailout deal is preferable to total failure. And such epic failure to assist such a massive undertaking as this one costing 3/4 of a billion dollars certainly does not encourage future investment in this country!
I would love to know more about what happened here - why is this theme park silent now? Most new big businesses should plan to lose money for the first 1-2 years, to break even for 3-4 years, and finally to turn a profit at 5 years of operations. So WHAT happened? Because I think there's a lot more politics to this story - and not only electricity bills and other debts. Such waste is difficult to stomach.
Thank you so much, Maureno. And many thanks to anyone else who would also very kindly answer this question. XX

Touchy much? This was never an insult to your country, nor is a personal attack on its citizens! How about you take your own advice and if you don't want to see the failure - then don't watch it.
But first things first: - Maureno NEVER SAID A BAD WORD of criticism about Turkey. I DID! In fact, he said nothing but very NICE THINGS about the country, AND he sang the praises of its people. I SAID that there's something seriously wrong with a government that would allow so many heavily-invested projects, like this one, to go 'belly up' and fail. Maureno never even SUGGESTED IT. Also, PLEASE NOTE that I did ask for more information (above) about why this is the way it is - because clearly there's something very wrong here - much more than than just unpaid debts and power bills, behind the closure of this park - as well as unfinished projects and millions of wasted dollars spread all over the Turkish countryside. BUT I DID ask for more information (and on a different thread I also added that it's preferable to know the FULL story of what's happening here than to point the finger where it may not be deserved - and I do the same here now, for YOUR personal benefit).
But of course it IS INDEED outsiders' business! It's the business of every observer who takes an interest in global economics. And this does NOT look good for Turkey. The world is a stage - and wherever there's social, political or economic injustice in our global village, people WILL judge. That is simply how it works - and whether it stings your personal feelings or not is far beside the point.
I can assure you that without even knowing the full story of why there's so much economic waste in Turkey - further large-scale investment will certainly not be forthcoming to its borders - not after this epic failure! Because it wouldn't matter if this was Turkey or Timbuktu. Surely you must understand that had this failure occurred in my own country, or any other, then global eyes, including your own, would be judging it instead and asking questions .. But as it's occurred in your country, so it is that Turkey is the subject of that judgement. I fully understand that judgement and criticism are unpalatable to anyone who is under the microscope, but that is simply the nature of things - it is not a personal attack on you or your country. Don't take it so personally.
Perhaps instead of being upset about the criticism, perhaps you would find it more constructive to answer my question and enlighten me - indeed enlighten ALL of us - and help us to understand the exact circumstances that led to the total failure of the theme park? And these other big-investment failures in Turkey?
Maureno has simply done what he does exceedingly well - he only explored and recorded abandoned properties. He never ran your country down, he never said anything bad about its government OR the people - he did the exact opposite. He is only interested in Urban Explorations and finding the best places to show his viewers. So don't blame him for having INADVERTENTLY exposed the massive economic and government failures occurring in Turkey in the process! Because anyone with half a brain will figure out in just two videos (this one, and the "cut n paste castles") that there has to be something inherently wrong with a government that wouldn't want to back progress and growth in their own country, and MAY even have been active in creating the political red tape and other obstacles that resulted in a total cessation of these operations. And of how many others? It's not like Explomo deliberately went out to find or expose these failures. They just happened to film them in the Urbex genre. They aren't "trying to do" ANYTHING else. AT ALL.
Like I said, my own comments are my own comments, not Maureno's. He never said or even implied anything that you accuse him of. I DID. I spoke critically of what I see as epic failure but Maureno did no such thing, and I unreservedly defend him on that point. But I HAVE done so with many more questions in mind than there are answers for. It was not, and is not, intended to be an attack on anyone's country, or on any group or individual. More information is required, and if you can kindly please explain what you know of it to us all, then I know that I wouldn't be the only one who would certainly be thankful to you and would appreciate it very much. Thank you. JW.

@@j.whiteoak6408 hello, and thank you for taking the time to respond... let me try to ecplain my point of view in a different way...out of all thr private mansions abandoned videos, only projects related to the state of Turkey were exposing state owned projects... to clarify why I feel there is discreet discrimination I simply ask, has the content creator exposed any other "state project" around the world? (Not a privately owned mansion or castle) from what I've seen the answer is No... this continuous soft bashing is unfair, specially of a government which to be objective has lifted its people from afghan like poverty to become one of the world's major economic powers in only a few decades...
Now i would take back my comments in two scenarios. 1. If the content creator has videos exposing any other "state" and I can help him name a few projects in America, France, Australia, England, Russia to name a few where the taxpayer money waste was in billions (however nothing in his videos about any other country's state project, except turkey)
And 2. If the content creator had not personalized it and wrongly referred to the "owner" of the project as the president himself, clearly showing discreet bias against the government.
In summary, and to avoid this discussion going down a rabbit hole, gone are the days where the western world can simply sound sophisticated to get away with soft discrimanatory comments in the name of art, politics or religion... either be fair in your judgement or stay away from bashing other states when ur own states have turned into Mafia like corporations sucking dry the tax payers ... that's all... peace and love to you my friend.

Thank you for your reply, City Snapshots. But you still have not answered my question - which was to please help us understand how this happened, and what you perceive to be going on in Turkey for this TO happen. What excuses did the government make to the people for the park's closure? Instead you have only defended your own displeasure at Explomo filming in your country - with accusations that they set out to create adeliberate exposé of financial failures and government involvement. And that's a shame, because it's clearly an inadvertent result. Clearly there HAS to be more to this park's closure than an unpaid $180,000 power bill. I know that if this happened in my country, I would be far more concerned about what the heck is going on behind the scenes for such massive financial waste to occur - I certainly would not be defending the powers that be which allowed and POSSIBLY even caused it to fail on their watch. And without further information, that is the ONLY conclusion anyone can possibly arrive at.
But you only seem to care that Explomo has SHOWED that sheer financial waste to the world, and you perceive to this to be a personal targeted attack on your country, when nothing is further from the truth. And you're taking it very personally yourself. Yes, I heard Maureno say SOMETHING about Erdogan being involved in the ownership of the park, but I also know that Maureno's English isn't perfect (and I love that, Maureno! It's one of your most endearing qualities!) - and in fact he really just glossed over the information about what he thinks are the reasons for the park's untimely closure - so I did not take it to MEAN that Erdogan HIMSELF ever actually owned it, per se. Most of us who are Maureno's regular and long-term viewers are quite familiar with his presentation style, and we know that he often uses his own imagination whilst describing certain situations, and how things MIGHT have happened - we're not meant to take EVERYTHING literally - and I didn't. I doubt very much that anyone else did either. Except for yourself, being the only one who is upset about it. There are other comments here from other locals - and they have not taken any offense at the filming of the park, or of the two cut-n-paste properties that were filmed. Or that they INADVERTENTLY showed that something isn't right about the story of how it came to close - or that this inadvertently caused some of us to question the point of wasted billions of dollars that investors have sunk into this country's economy, only to be forced to cease operations completely - and why? If you are a working taxpayer in Turkey, then I have to wonder why you yourself aren't asking questions why? Because it doesn't add up.
Maureno is an explorer of abandoned places - it's his absolute passion. So of course he'd be so excited about showing us abandonment on such an epic scale - and it simply doesn't GET more epic than the abandonment we see here! In fact, these two videos represent what I would have to label as THE most epic abandoned properties in the history of the urbex genre! I would also travel any distance to capture it on film too! My Turkish friends here tell me that the citizen there have most likely been given very false information about the real reasons why it closed. And that many of those people would actually believe what they're told and others would be too afraid to challenge that information. But the fact is that whether they are State-owned or in private ownership doesn't matter to Explomo (and Maureno never said that the cut-n-paste mansions were a State-owned concern. He did say that they were built by private investors). Again, I'M the one suggesting that those projects have some politically-related red-tape reasons for failure and POSSIBLY even corrupt political reasons as to why they are now big piles of wasted investment money - NOT Maureno. He just wanted to film it. And the park. As I said in my last, he INADVERTENTLY showed the sheer scale of wasted finance and failure here - it wasn't intentional on his part. He just discovered that by total MISTAKE, and he doesn't even CARE that the projects can be linked back to issues between investments poured into the country and the government of today. Have you forgotten that one of the cut-n-paste villages he discovered on his way to the Disney Castles was by complete ACCIDENT. He didn't even know that it were there! So it was in no way a premeditated exposé. That's simply not the case. But what he did INADVERTENTLY discover there is absolutely astonishing - whilst being beyond all sense!
If Maureno was aware of any similarly wasted abandoned projects of an urbex nature that were of ANY interest to him for the purposes of exploration and filming in any of the other countries that he regularly visits, you don't think he'd have already filmed it? Why would he travel so far to cover these properties if there were other properties anything remotely similar closer to home? Of course he'd go there first! He would have already covered them by now if there was ANYTHING like this in ANY of those countries. But nothing of this kind exists anywhere else!? ... But you still insist that he's deliberately 'picking on' your country? No. You have taken offense where absolutely none was intended and you're making accusations of him that simply aren't true!
But it doesn't take a Rhodes Scholar to figure out that SOMETHING is very wrong here.. And as I have already pointed out, if that did occur in my country, I'd want to know who's responsible for it - I certainly would not defend it JUST because it's happened in my country. Heads would roll if that happened in Australia! That said, I'd very much like to know of ANY such wasted projects or other wasted investment or taxpayer dollars in Australia that you've mentioned? ... Could you please name these projects or examples that you know of? Thank you. I can assure you that if any Premier or Prime Minster or other government representatives were ever guilty of such a crime here, they would be torn off his/her pedestal and jailed quick-smart.. I've been thinking about it, and I can't recall any such politically involved disgraces here - not since Bjelke-Petersen's days. Perhaps Holmes A'Court had some ALLEGED shady dealings in the mining sector - but both those Premiers are long disgraced and are long gone. More recently there was a politician, Gladys Liu, who was cited for financial and politically corrupt activities in cahoots with a communist power (that case is still under investigation by ASIO), and one another, Senator Dastiari, who was immediately deposed and utterly disgraced two years ago for accepting an undisclosed amount in a personal bribe of up to $10k..by the same communist power. Because in a Democracy we don't accept dirty politicians. Here, they must answer to the people who elected them, IE - to ALL of the people. They don't get away with such capers here! But I will concede that I'm not a political encyclopedia, and so perhaps I've forgotten or haven't heard of such an instance - so if you know of any political crimes, particularly those involving any abandoned properties and investments worth millions and billions of dollars, that are occurring here in Australia and that I'm unaware of - then please, do tell me! Thank you so very much.
You seem to believe that all Western governments are the devil - but your own is so trustworthy... Why do you not question that? You seem to place your absolute trust and faith in your government - something which my Turkish friends found they could not do... And I think EVERYONE should ask questions of their own government - at local, State and Federal levels - because power does strange things to people, and so most politicians can't be trusted so blindly to consistently do the right thing while they are in office. They need to be constantly monitored and questioned - because all politicians in a democracy must be held responsible for their own actions and are accountable for everything that they say and do whilst they hold office.
And so I do hope that you now realise and understand that Maureno did not come to Turkey with any preconceptions or pre-meditated intentions other than to film some of the most incredible abandoned properties ever filmed in the history of urban exploration. That's the ONLY reason why he came - and he never planned to intentionally expose ANYONE, or any THING in your country. He was not there to show any financial waste, or to make any political sense of how this could have occurred, or to make accusations of your government. You MUST understand that now, yes? And so I would also ask you again to please not take it so personally, and to PLEASE enlighten those of us who are asking for clarification and more information about what REALLY happened here. Who IS ultimately responsible for the gross failure of these heavily-invested ventures? What REALLY happened to result in the closure of this amusement park? And also, if you could please explain how 'they' have tried to cover up the truth? Because SOMEONE (or some group) IS ultimately responsible for it. The park is NOW in the hands of the city's mayor and the country's President - how is this possible? Surely only a gullible fool believes that it's due to a $180k power bill. It's such a paltry sum compared to the $750,000 already invested in the amusement park.. It's simply not a rational or valid excuse for the total failure of the park. But I would still very much thank you for sharing what you have been TOLD happened with the amusement park, at least...and so would quite a few others who've obviously taken an interest in this thread, as I can see that others have picked up on this conversation. I thank you most kindly for your reply.
      Kindest regards,
      J. Whiteoak.

Hi Nesrin Cakir, I am wondering if you might be able to help us understand more about WHY this theme really park closed after just 15 months? I can't believe that they spent $750 MILLION dollars on it only to be 'unable to pay' a $180 THOUSAND dollar electricity bill. It sounds like a cop-out excuse for political interference or something else. As you are a local, I wondered if you would be kind enough to share what you might know about what really happened here? @@artvandelay1993
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR KIND REPLY, ART VANDELAY!! I was quite certain that the CoVid-19 pandemic had absolutely nothing at all to do with the park's closure, because it closed before the first case of CoVid even reached Turkey. (And that rubbish about it being due to CoVid, is merely the invented ramblings of an adamant and opinionated imagination that just HAS to be right, and sprouts it out as if that opinion is the gospel truth!)
But red-tape did have a lot to do with it, then? And it came down to SAFETY!! Well, that would be one of the most important elements in the operation of any theme park. So then, if safety was an issue for you and caused you to stay away from the park, then do you think it was likely an issue for many others as well? And what do you think about the investors spending $750 MILLION DOLLARS on the park, but not getting the safety certificates done? Did the government perhaps charge exorbitant fees for these these safety certificates and they refused to pay them? Or did they just refuse to pay them? Or were the certificates issued by a private entity - and they just didn't get them done?
I would very much like to know what happened, and why.. just so I can try to make sense of it - and it appears that many others in the comments and are asking the same questions. I wonder.. Could the government perhaps have waived these fees for the first year, or maybe allowed the park to pay for them once they were up and operating - and making money? But I suppose that that safety certificates would have to be issued on a regular basis - like, at least once a year - perhaps even more often on some of the roller-coasters and other more dangerous rides with moving parts where friction can wear parts down, bolts and pins can snap, and roller-coaster tracks have been known to form cracks, causing carts filled with occupants to be thrown from the rides resulting in injuries and even death... So I can well-imagine that the ongoing costs for maintenance and safety inspections would be quite astronomical - particularly for a park of this size! I hadn't actually thought about safety issues - and I certainly don't wish to accuse any one entity such as your government, of doing something that they didn't do, or of being involved in something that they weren't! Nor do I wish to assume that something happened that absolutely didn't! But I just totally don't believe that the park closed down permanently simply over non-payment of a $120k bill after just one year when $750 MILLION dollars was sunk into the creation of the park to start with.
.. There is something very with that explanation!
So I am very grateful to you for explaining something of the truth, and I'm sorry to bother you for more information, but it would be very much appreciated by everyone who's trying to make sense of the closure and apparent waste of so much money. THANK YOU SO MUCH!

I read that you are planning an American trip. Our beautiful country is full of abandoned places, so you have a lot of research to do. I'm looking forward to what you find. God Bless.

I cannot believe that they would build a waterslide over the top of a roller coaster track. That does not seem safe whatsoever!! Also, can you imagine how loud it must have been inside that building with all the rides operating and people?!?

Oh my! Oh My! I think this was my very favorite documentary ever!!!!! I grew up around amusement parks. Went to our local park at least once a week and Disneyland was close! I'm still a big kid at heart. If I were a billionaire, I'd see about getting that park up and running. Such an amazing place!! Thank you both for the wonderful adventure!!!!!

Hola Maureno y Carter!!

That was a very cool trip with y’all and thanks for sharing your turkey exploration of the abandoned theme park, and it’s sad to see all that beautiful workmanship going to waste I truly hope that they can find a way to open it back up for the many of families that would love to go and spend some great time with their family and friends. Y’all did have me on the end of my seat a few times during your adventure, and I was praying that y’all didn’t get caught. Glad that y’all made it out safely.🙏❤️👍

Hola Explomo!!
