This is a great trail. I've never thought about cutting the first part of the trail like you did, but I have thought about cutting out early on the dirt road you cross at about 10:15. The trail really starts to flatten out at that point and it would save on a bit of the climb back out. I took Casci Road up once, and for most people I would not recommend that. It turns into a dirt road that is pretty washed out by rain and just isn't worth it in my opinion. You do get a good view of the lake over that way, there is a stretch of the road that goes right along the water however there are no trespassing signs and you aren't supposed to leave the road.
Also have you ever done the full length of the trail as shown on MTB project, I've never done it but it seems to me you would have to pay the $2 entry fee into the lake to continue going that way. www.mtbproject.com/trail/5262192/scotts-flat-lake-trail

i used to cut out at that fire road all the time, i finish the trail now and get that little extra. a little bit before you enter the main campground entrance, look on your right. the trail continues and takes you around the boat launch and along the lake. 100% worth it, awesome views and a handful of places to stop and hang out at the lake. you ride out campground 2 and back to the road. i've bombed through the entrance of the campground and i'm not sure if there's a day use fee or not. i try not to bug em when i'm on a bike and not camping or boating. i just take the trail around and to the lake! ah, it's marked perfectly on the MTB Project link, right where the trail continues.
