This Baby Elephant Thinks He's Human, You Won't Believe What He Does on the Couch!

  • A retired British couple in rural Kenya never expected their lives to change the day they found a collapsed baby elephant at their fence. Weak, dehydrated, and alone, the calf - later named Benny - needed urgent help. With no rescue team available for days, they did the unthinkable: they took him in.
Benny didn't just survive - he became family.
He followed them like a child, waited at doors, mirrored their routines, and one night… he climbed onto the couch and fell asleep like he believed he was human.

They knew that elephant baby boy " Benny " had to leave their care to live as an elephant in the wild! Benny was going to live among his own kind though these people Margaret and Harold were WONDERFUL parents that loved Benny it had to end! Benny had to become a wild elephant once again!!!

A gentle and deeply touching moment. Margaret and Harold’s compassion feels natural and earned, and Benny’s quiet trust makes the scene incredibly moving. It’s a beautiful reminder of how kindness can begin with one small, brave decision.

Benny survived because of these two. Pictures of him on the sofa, and touching her face with his trunk are invaluable. He knows, and will remember them.

The couple should adopt an Anatolian Shepherd. It is a really big dog who forms deep attachments to his people. There are a lot available for adoption because people get them not realizing how much space they need or how loud their bark can be. But this couple's spread looks ideal. He would fill up 2/3 of that couch at night and would naturally seek to protect them, not aggressively but by placing himself between them & strangers. In a little while, their house wouldn't feel empty at all and a great dog would get a new more appropriate home with people who wouldn't be able to help but love him.

I love your stories and find them easy to believe. That said, I have worked with American Black Bear cubs in California. I've picked up the poop; I've heard about a cub upstairs seemingly deliberately peeing on the stylish blond hair of a volunteer worker. I've seen them on camera letting go a great poop and looking rather guilty. One bitter cold day during my training, we hade a tiny cub indoors with us. Mendy (found in Mendocino) climbed onto a folding metal chair beside me. I froze because she was SO WILD! Bear cubs look cuddly but their fur is actually a bit rough -- and their claws are needle sharp! I wouldn't dream of cuddling a cub like Mendy, and we don't cuddle creatures we hope to return to the wild. Anyway, you don't detail just how Benny asked to go outside to poop -- or what. I do think if you love an animal and clean up promptly, the smell is tolerable and the good life continues.
