  • Time to use the Nano VNA to check the SWR on the Antron 99 which has been through 2 storms this year so it could be sky high.

    My A99 just arrived today! I'll have it up soon - very nicely made antenna. Test run at 12' showed SWR at 1.0
    Worst I got was 1.2 on high end UK FM (and no one swore at me) so a good result I say!
    Hope to reach some of you on USB very soon!

    Hi Fred , Great videos & very informative . I've been watching other youtube videos on grounding home base antennas to earth via a copper coated ground electrode spike that's connected to the Antron wall bracket with 16mm copper ground cable in order to protect radio equipment from high atmospheric static , this may also protect equipment in thunder storms .

    Fred, a suggestion for a video I'd like to see - using the nanoVNA to help tune an antenna for CB. Identifying when an antenna whip is too long or too short, etc. I'm sure it must be possible, looking at the SWR curve and easier than using a traditional SWR meter at ch1, chh40 and ch19 and comparing values. Thanks.

    These are awesome! I've had mine 2 days but just got the SMAUHF MALE - SO239 FEMALE adapter today. Ironically my base and my dump truck antennas are tuned about like yours. The antennas need shortening just a little to resonate at the center of the band.
    I had a thought...if you wanted to use the antenna on 10 and 11 meter I suppose you could tune it to resonate its lowest swr at 28.000 mhz?
    These are so much easier than setting SWR with a traditional meter.
    Now that I know there is a v curve I could use the old SWR meter more effectively. There is so much going back and checking with every little antenna adjustment though it can wear you down.
    With the Nano you can make an antenna adjustment and simply watch the screen.😀

    The 27.6 set point means both ends the FM 40 and the US or EU 40 are still below 2.0 certainly usable and with your little tuner if need be you could touch it up. I would be curious to see what happens if you do one of two things, drop a ground wire to the ground below with a rod in the ground and or secondarily attach your mount pole or ground the pole to the gutter if there is one? You are in my view correct to think swr wise your A 99 is working well. The second thing I would like to see is you do the same as in this video except for 18.1 or 17 meters, 21.3 or 15 meters and 24.990 or 12 meters and the voice or ssb on 10 or 28.400 I would expect possibly all to be under 2.1 SWR well with in using ? I know many hams use the A 99 on these bands but have not seen any videos like this one for those bands. By the way I ordered one of these VNAs from the link you shared, can you tell me if it took a while for the shipping to show it shipped, the seller has it showing on the tracking as contacted but not being shipped. Curious of your experience? Also the link I sent you the other day has the DX Commander builder Cal there in the UK starting some videos on how to get a Foundation licence or call sign, with the money you already have invested why not get the first level license , build a few dipoles in your attic or use the A-99 and also use your radios on those bands. Like you I started as a CBer, am loyal to my roots yet also can use the ham bands. Other than some wire etc you could get going with very little costs. Cal's DX-Commander multi-band vertical can be bought in your country rather cheaply and you could really put your VNA to good use. Doesn't mean you leave your friends on 27,305 just make some more new ones !

      @@CB-RADIO-UK Buy a more expensive coax, I think you might be surprised how much a difference it will make. I know it is the thicker lower loss, but look around for cable with a higher spec. Good cables will give you a loss spec per meter. In the meantime put a bit of tape with a string hanging down, the water will follow it to ground and not go into the shed. Bit of string round coax, tape over that so it makes a ridge then put another bit of string in front (the uphill side) and water will follow it off the cable. EDIT: For antennas well up into the air, it is better for safety if you put an earth to ground, at the very least, get a spark gap connector that will take static or lightning to earth, it won't save the CB, but it might well save you or the shed. At night put a short on the coax, just use a plug shorted to the outer and if you have a spark arresting connector in-line it will take anything straight to ground. It will not help in a direct strike, but I have seen a lot of high voltage sparks jumping from coax before now. My antenna always had a big heavy wire to earth.

    • @yotubeurk
      @yotubeurk 4 года назад +1

      If you get water in the coax, it also creeps upwards due to the pressure from above and corrosion of copper via your outer jacket of your coax, just like a cotton wick it has cost me 17.6 meters of coax.

    Regarding measuring: "any objects placed around an antenna, such as an enclosure or product packaging, will alter its radiation pattern, thus altering its input impedance. That’s why it’s important to use a VNA to measure the input impedance of the antenna (including its intended feed line) within the environment that will most closely resemble where it is intended to operate." -- from a good article by Tektronix here: www.tek.com/blog/antenna-matching-vector-network-analyzer
