    @BioRach so are the 2 types of summations (spatial/temporal ) part of the role of the synapse or not?
    I'm finding it super hard to figure out which bits are part of the role of synapse ?
    is summation part of the role im so confused?

      You are correct but to make it clear: a role of a synapse is to determine if an impulse can be transmitted or not, depending on what type of synapse it is. The word 'summation' is the name for this role.
      So the two types of summation refers to two different outcomes of the process, which depends on the type of synapse and its function (hence its 'role').
      That's all you need to know for AL, but to supplement this, read on:
      For example in spatial summation, a synapse may require impulses from two separate neurones in order to generate a new impulse to pass onto the next neurone, so if only one impulse is received, then no new impulse is generated - this is almost like the all-or-nothing principle - if there isn't enough excitation/stimulus isn't "strong" enough (where only one receptor detects a stimulus and one neurone is used to transmit hence impulse), then there's no particular need to pass on that signal since it's weak. It's kind of the same for temporal, but for spatial, it could be an excitatory and an inhibitory impulse combining together and cancelling out, or two excitatory/inhibitory combining to bring out different effects. There's a large scope of potential control of the neurones and impulses, hence large range of effects.

      do you say the 2 types of summation?
      what about the other stuff on when a neurone transmits impulse to many neurones ( the stuff you say at the start)
      where does that come into play
