    When I made my list of my favorite Disney movies, Peter Pan ended up as #8. First of all, I see Peter Pan as a must-watch for children. It has everything that can entertain children; exciting adventure, funny stuff, heroes defeating villains and songs. Also, talking about growing up gives children plenty to think over. My second reason for liking Peter Pan is the voice cast. Although I think Bobby Driscoll was rather old to play Peter Pan, the other child actors were a pretty good age, especially Tommy Luske as Michael. Michael is actually my favorite character in this movie because he is so cute and sweet. I will also say the adult voices are somewhat good, especially Bill Thompson. I just wish Tinkerbell could have had a voice; why not Margaret Kerry? (She already did live action reference to begin with, why not her voice as well?) If you ask me, it's the other three children who are the stars, not Peter Pan. The three child stars learn how good it is to grow up, but Peter Pan learns nothing. He stays exactly the same with every child he brings to Neverland. This is not a bad thing, though. It means the child viewers can identify with the Darling children, and they can learn the lesson as well. It's actually better for the Darling children to learn the lesson instead of Peter. If anything, Peter might as well teach them this lesson.

    this movie is puzzling. on the one hand, the story is entertaining, the animation is amazing, and it's got a number of laughs (when Smee pulls up his shirt and you see his mother tattoo during Wendy's song is comical), but on the other hand, i really didn't care for any of the characters. Peter's a jerk, and even though he kinda turns a new leaf at the end of the film, that doesn't really change what came before, Tink is jealous and vain, the Darlings aren't all that interesting, and the Lost Boys even less so. the only characters i did really like were the pirates. Captain Hook and Mr. Smee are hilarious. i didn't think it was a bad film by any means, but it's not my very favorite. i give it an 8.5/10.
    oh, wait
    ...oh yeah...the "Redmen"...
    that was one of the most painful things i've ever sat through. i mean, goodness it's bad.

    Joe the Disney Guy, I have heard that Walt Disney was unsatisfied with Peter Pan feeling that Peter was too cold and unlikeable, but critics found that the character of Peter was close to the book. They also say that Peter was meant to be a heartless sociopath. Do you feel Peter is a heartless sociopath??

    Speaking on Disneyfied (yeah that's how I'm spelling it.) disney originally wanted to do a disney film about Christopher Columbus with Mickey, Donald, and Goofy as the captains of the Santa Maria, Pinta, and Nina.
    But it was scrapped as they didn't know how to handle when they got to the new world.

  • @bluethunder250
    @bluethunder250 9 лет назад +4

    Guess what Peter Pan was? Yep, another Disney film I watched often as a kid.
    My, my, my, do I have some things to say about this film. Where do I start?
    I think it's a decent film. I has memorable songs and characters and a good theme about growing up. (which I'll talk about in a minute).
    Mr. Darling is hilarious!! The way he reacts to everything makes me laugh hard!!
    Captain Hook. Man! Do I feel sorry for what the poor guy goes through. He got his hand cut off by Peter Pan and he tries so hard to get his revenge and always ends up getting utterly humiliated. At least they somewhat cut him a break in "Jake and the Neverland Pirates." (honestly, Hook's antics and his relationship with Red Jessica are the only things about that show that interest me).
    I like Smee, Peter and Wendy, because she is delightfully talkative.
    But let's talk about Tinkerbell. When I was a kid, I didn't think much about Tinkerbell, She was Pan's sidekick and the one who always waved her wand on the screen. But then came 2008, after I had heard about a Tinkerbell movie where tink would talk for the first time. One day on RUclips, I decided to give the film and watch and I loved it. From that point one, I became addicted to the Tinkerbell movies and my opinion on the character changed a whole lot. So much so, that I was overjoyed when she got her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Now, I can't get enough of Tink and the others and I hope they never stop making Tinkerbell movies.
    Finally, I'll talk about the main theme of the movie: growing up. No one really wants to grow up. Nowadays, we always like to look back to our childhood and remember the good ole days. But I have a saying that goes, "you're only as old as you act." It is important to be mature, but at the same time, you should keep the small child in you alive, even when you grow old. I know when I'm eventually 70 or 80, I'll still be doing childish things.

    • @JoeTheDisneyGuy
      @JoeTheDisneyGuy  9 лет назад +1

      Yup, not a bad saying and it is funny to me how Tinkerbell, who really wise a glorified sidekick in this film, became the icon that she is today

    Peter Pan is one of my all time favorite Disney films, and probably my favorite of the Golden Age. Peter Pan has always been one of my all time favorite characters and like most people my age and younger, they were introduced to the character through Disney. There isn't a single character in this film that I don't like. That being said, it is of course important to remember the era in which this film was made when seeing how the Native Americans were portrayed. It's also an interesting factor for me personally since although most of my heritage is Caucasian, I do also have Native American ancestry from my grandmother on my dad's side which makes these scenes particularly fascinating for me to watch and reflect on.

    Joe, Peter Pan also had a legacy in food, Peter Pan Peanut Butter had been named after the film's release and in the 50's various commercials often showed Peter's sidekick Tinker Bell.

    • @JoeTheDisneyGuy

    • @diggerfan9319
      @diggerfan9319 9 лет назад +4

      Well, yeah, but the brand did exist as far back as 1920, and originally was called "E.K. Pond" and renamed to Peter Pan Peanut Butter in 1928. The brand was struggling until Disney asked them to be the sponsor for the Disneyland television series back in the 1950's. I guess Peter Pan did really had a legacy in food and I was shocked that you didn't include that in the legacy portion of this video.

    When I was a little Kid I HATE that movie, because I LOVED the book and I thought they stole Captain Hook his dignity. But to be fair, even writer J.M. Barrie never saw that Pirate as a Main character. The Villain of the Play was - and has always been - Peter Pan himself.

    • @simonacannizzo1074
      @simonacannizzo1074 6 лет назад +1

      Robin Schicha Peter Pan was to be the closest thing to a villain but really actually never a villain. Captain Hook is not necessarily the prime antagonist of the story but he is necessary to complete the story so he is a main character. Also C.Hook is given a detailed appearance, we are given an insight into his person and brain. JM Barrie definitely saw him as a main character-after all he has the author's first name.

    • @LC-id6wx
      @LC-id6wx 6 лет назад +2

      I like the Disney adaptation, but it kind of butchered Peter's character and ignored his lack of long term memory, which was so important in the book. They could've disneyfied it without removing the most fascinating element of the story.
      The Disney version does portray Peter Pan as a selfish bastard with little empathy (even though they softened it a bit and removed the darker stuff), but it ignores the tragedy of his character.
      He can't remember things for too long or form real connections with people, because that would make him mature and grow up. And he doesn't even realize that he's missing out on great things that only adults can understand. Remember that scene where Hook takes advantage of his naivety and tricks him to win the fight? He immediately forgets about that valuable lesson the first chance he gets. It was a very memorable scene and I wish the Disney version had included it.
      Also, why did they make him look like some kind of elf with pointy ears?

    • @simonacannizzo1074
      @simonacannizzo1074 6 лет назад

      Eliomi Disney modeled Peter Pan after his Voice Actor Bobby Driscoll. But I lost my respect for Walt on this Disney movie a bit because of the whole kidnapping belief( again not positive if he actually thought that especially since he was Peter in his school play once and the story stuck with him - apparently the film was intended to be released after Snow White) Two other things- they changed the poison scene for child friendly purposes though in the book Hook carries the deadly stuff that he himself made. Tink is also a problem- they sexualized her - some even believe she was modeled after Marilyn Monroe herself; Since Peter hangs with her he supposedly is not a human. I used to love the movie but now I just like it. The book however that is a masterpiece!

    Ah growing up. I'm soon to be 26 and there's alot of me that wants to resist adulthood. Well thanks to this film I never have to give up all my childlike wonder. Peter Pan is one of those movies that I have a hard time separating my nostalgic point of view from my critical point of view.
    I mean, this was like my favourite Disney film as a young child.
    I will concede that the way Native Americans are portrayed is a little offensive, but, yeah, as you said, this was how they were portrayed in the original novel.
    In a way, I'm glad they were cut from "Return to Neverland", but still having the settlement make a few cameos.
    On the subject of Return to Neverland, I found it to be great in the animation, great in the story and staying truthful to the novel, but it's nowhere near as good as "Peter Pan".
    Tinker Bell, I find to be a great character and, perhaps, the best character to get a spin-off movie franchise (aside from Winnie the Pooh), since there are so many great concepts pretty much gift-wrapped.
    As you said, the character developments of Peter Pan, George Darling and Wendy Darling are some of the greatest and most intertwined in Disney's history. I feel that this set the basis for future character developments of a trio of characters. Off the top of my head, Hunchback of Notre Dame, Aladdin, Tarzan and Lion King.
    I like how they made George relate-able in his treatment of Wendy, John and Michael, but never make his actions "okay".
    And Peter Pan's flaws are what make him human. Everyone has flaws and no one is perfect. This is why I feel like most recent Disney characters are less three dimensional than the past characters, such as Pinocchio, Peter (duh) and Grumpy.
    Oh, and nice review, as always :D

    There's a piece of information you got wrong. The sequel to Peter Pan wasn't direct-to-video, it actually had a theatrical release. Another important detail that you left out that is actually VERY important to make. Walt Disney himself actually hated Peter Pan the character. He said himself that he was too immature and cold-hearted, which I personally agree with because Peter Pan is a very unlikable character. Once Upon A Time even took advantage of Peter Pan's horrible character and made him a villain, a role that is more suited for him.

    The thing is, certain things from the actual story were scrubbed. For example, Peter killing Lost Boys who become too old to remain forever young. Even in the film, beyond the racist depiction of the Blackfoot natives, the mermaids & Tinker Belle do both try to get rid of Wendy, as Tink tells the Lost Boys to shoot Wendy out of the sky in the hopes that she would fall to her death before Peter catches her & one of the mermaids directly tells Peter that they were trying to drown Wendy, with Peter being oblivious to this & thinking the mermaids were just having harmless fun.

    At 14:43 when you said it got a re-release in 1958 at the right bottom corner there's a promotion poster of Winnie the Pooh and the Honey Tree, but how is that possible if Walt Disney didn't buy the rights to Winnie the Pooh in 1961 and the first Winnie the Pooh short wasn't released until 1966, unless the poster is from after 1966 and advertising another re-release. Also, Winnie the Pooh also has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

    I know I posted a comment a long time ago, but I really have a speech about this film. When I was younger, I really loved this movie, but who inspired me to research more on the original play was Michael Jackson himself since he loved the story and the character so much. I feel as if this story is a lot easier to adapt than Alice in Wonderland, but it could go in so many directions, and I've seen so many adaptations that it's not even funny. Two popular ones are this and the 2003 version, which I think are the best. Heck, I think Once Upon a Time did a good job as well. However, I think it depends on certain circumstances. First of all, Peter has to be relatable to the element of childhood. Peter is cocky, he's selfish, but at the same time, he admires his friends. That's being a kid. I have a feeling that sometimes, some adaptations make Peter a little too adult or a little too dimwitted, which he's not. Furthermore, because of this movie, a lot more Peters are being portrayed by boys. I think it's because of the CGI effects doing everything, but I have seen some awesome guy and girl Peter Pans, so that's not an issue. Also, Captain Hook has to be on par. There are two versions I've met of this character. There can be the serious, evil pirate. There's also the comedic captain (hence this movie). It's impossible to pull off both (take a look at the Peter Pan Live show from 2014 to see what I mean; Christopher Walken as Hook...seriously?). As far as being introduced to the story is concerned, this is a great version because the original is very dark. Personally, I love Tinker Bell casted a human instead of a glowing light because to me, she has more personality being a human fairy. I can talk about this topic so much, but that would last forever.

That said, its not exactly one of my favorites, but I still really enjoy watching it. Captain Hook is definitely one of my favorite Disney villains! Am I the only one who didn't think Peter felt that young? When I was younger I thought both Peter's design & voice made him seem older than I thought he was supposed to be...

    Oh, sorry I haven't commented in a while, internet was shut off.
    Anyway, I love this film from start to finish, and the odd thing is that even though I'm Native American myself, I saw the Natives in the film as more cool than offensive(I still see it that way today).
    "Peter Pan" was one of the few animated Disney features I could completely sit through as a kid because I wasn't a big fan of the Disney darkness back then. Every character I found memorable, and every scene was fun for me.
    I like Tinker Bell, but I'm starting to get annoyed by the number of films she's getting, though granted I haven't seen all of them yet. I know not all of them are going to be good, but I hope they won't be like the average DisneyToon sequel.
    I'm actually planning on auditioning for a Youth Theatre version of the play, but I doubt it'll be like it was portrayed in "Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No good very bad day". I just hope Peter himself will be played by a smaller male instead of a female like usual.

    Loved this movie ever since I was a kid. To be honest, I'm not a big Tinkerbell fan, but the other characters make up for that. Heck, the Captain Hook and the rest of the pirates are about 50% of the reason I like the film so much. I keep going back to it again and again.

    • @JoeTheDisneyGuy
      @JoeTheDisneyGuy  9 лет назад

      Captain Hook is a surprisingly entertaining character. I actually forgot how much I liked his character until I went back and watched this again. I really think it was the blending of the two ideas for the character that made him so original and unique

      Yeah, I always sort of assumed that was their version of an homage to Tink's "death" in the play. That or the entire movie could be interpreted as Peter's adventures, which is why he can do almost anything and why we see so much action

    Joe The Disney Guy Another fantastic review sir. I commend you on it. I knew this one would be big due to it's history but you taught me things I didn't know as a Disney fan. Who knew that was Tinker Bell in the old Walt Disney Pictures logo? That's awesome dude. Maybe the next video is Mary Blair. If it is, I'm excited.

      Well, I can tell you that next week will not be an Influential Person video, but that being said, there will be one in the near future.
      And thank you, the Tinker Bell in the logo thing fascinated me too. It really is sort of a no brainer in retrospect, but just wasn't something I had thought about before

    Does anyone else think Peter's character in the movie is still kind of a jerk? Okay, there's good stuff, but the thing is, those parts of his character that people don't like are never going to develop. A lot of his worst traits are ones that often disappear with age. So he's going to be deeply flawed forever because he can't develop past them. Oh, there's a lot of good things, like I said, but I don't like brats who don't take anything seriously and think they deserve everything. Sorry if you like him, but I really don't.

    It´s suprising even to me I don´t favor this movie more then I do. Oh well no matter I do like this movie. Now when you brought light to how secretly brilliant the character´s are written I can appreciate this movie more. I did´t have a problem with the Native Americans. Even thought they are suppose to me more there as a boys fantasy I can understand how they chould have done it diffrently. But even with that I still love there song. I think it showed how great and awesome they were. Maybe becuse the lyrics I had in the Swedish dub was´t as racesist as the english one. But I have´t compared them. I do tear up at the end scene I just love the music playing during it. - You know I do belive I have seen that ship before, a long time ago, when I was a little child. Something I like to say to modern Disney movies when they do succed to have there own eternal classic magical feeling in them. Oh ofcurse I used to watch this movie with my sister and we were always dying on the floor of laughter when Hook was struggeling with the crocodile in the Skull Cave. Among the best slap stick I have ever seen. Great diggin of this information you are doing a wonderful job. Keep it up!

    Honestly I loved this film, it was very fun. I love Peter Pan he's such a likeable character, I love the way they animated Tinker Bell too, with those eyes, it's very powerful.
    The only weak point for me was the romance part, I mean I understand family romance, but in like girlfriend and boyfriend type of relationship, it's weak because Neverland is suppose to be a place where you never grow up and the fact is that I don't think Peter has and idea what love is, but rest I enjoy, it's fun movie that anyone can sit back and have fun with it.

    • @JoeTheDisneyGuy
      @JoeTheDisneyGuy  9 лет назад +1

    In before a bunch of edgy folks say that Peter Pan did kidnap the Darling children in the original tale, no this wasn't the case in the novel, and you're probably thinking of a darker spin-off novel written by someone who is unaffiliated with the Great Ormond hospital.
    And no Hook wasn't originally a lost boy either. Again, you're probably thinking of a fan novel.
