  • Ontario ministers hold a news conference after the tabling of their government’s new community safety bill in the legislature. If passed, Bill-223 would prohibit supervised consumption sites operating near schools and daycares and would require municipalities to get provincial approval before opening a new site. The legislation also contains a suite of other measures, including new penalties for those convicted of using fake vehicle identification numbers, and banning name changes for sex offenders.
Speaking with reporters are Ontario Solicitor General Michael Kerzner, who tabled the bill, as well as Sylvia Jones (Ontario’s deputy premier and minister of health), Graham McGregor (associate minister of auto theft and bail reform), Deputy Chief Roger Wilkie (president of the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police), and Mark Baxter (president of the Police Association of Ontario).
