Lionel was so genuine in his delivery of his heart grabbing love ballads. There was never a doubt that he was all in emotionally when it came to his classic such as " Still". I just happen to be "lucky in love" at the height of his career and his songs just enhanced the romance in the relationship.
That's my favorite Commodores/Lionel Richie song the way he deliver the vocals like a country singer and add a little bit of soul with it pure genius #SailOn #Songwriter #LionelRichie #Commodores
I am 34 now but when I was 11/12, my family drove a 100 miles or so to go on holiday and my parents would blast out Lionel Richie albums. Brilliant and very nostalgic.
Lionel is a true legend. I remember having The Commodores on cassette and wearing out “Brick House”. Even now, when I hear that song, the volume goes way up! Thanks prof!
@@ProfessorofRock Good list and far be it from me to lecture the Proff, but I think you whiffed on this one. In my opinion perhaps Lionel's best song, certainly his most under-rated/over-looked. ruclips.net/video/DXMDWfLclNY/видео.html
Loved Lionel Ritchie growing up. My father was a glam rock fan, but my mother was a huge Motown fan. So luckily I got to grow up with Ritchie's great music with the Commodores and as a solo artist. All night long is probably my favourite of his. Easy like Sunday morning is another personal favourite. Great video professor. 👍
your ability to give voice to the music and interpret the artists and their flow and meaning is a gift I appreciate. Ever think about doing a video on Talk Talk ?
Lionel's solo album helped me through my first big break up- I played it in my car 5 hours from college to home, from home to college. Great voice. Specia1 video.
I remember back in the day that he was so big, “Stuck On You” hit #24 on the Billboard Country Singles Chart, and his song with Alabama, “Deep River Woman”, made the top 10! That guy was en fuego!
Lionel Richie was great with the Commodores and on his own. You're right, it's tough to list top 5 from both. So this is my top 5 for each: Commodores: 5. Three Times A Lady 4. Lady(You Bring Me Up) 3. Sail On 2. Easy... and yes, I always sing the guitar solo! 1. Still Lionel Richie: 5. Say You Say Me 4. Running With The Night 3. All Night Long 2. Truly 1. Lionel Richie is a national treasure. He should be in every hall of fame that he is eligible for. He is one of the best judges ever on American Idol. His talent is immeasurable. Thank you Lionel Richie for bringing so much joy to all of us!!
Lionel Richie wrote great love songs and then sang them. I have fond memories of remembering their debuts on the radio and listening to American Top 40, Casie Kasem, as they would rise to the very top! His songs are timeless.
you just can't beat that 70s talent. Only they could make the 80s into something good.! The 70s musicians always seemed to have a hidden cave of great music to keep, not only the 70s decade entertained but also the 80s and 90s. You just don't see that kind of talent anymore.
I always have the feeling, listening to your videos, that if only the artists themselves were to listen to them, they would become your biggest fans. I cannot imagine Lionel Richie not listening to this and absolutely loving how utterly well you cover his career and how much you show an authentic love of music.

Even though Lionel didn't sing it, my absolute favorite Lionel Richie song that he wrote was "Lady". I love, love, love that song! I also loved Kenny Rogers story of where Lionel wrote the second verse! 😂
Lionel was a big part of my childhood as well professor. When I saw him in concert a few years ago, it was incredible. He needs to be in the Hall of Fame this year. He is in 6th place.
Mr Richie is first and foremost a huge hearted gentleman and genuine top notch great human being, then secondly the world’s #1 musical talent there aren’t enough wonderful words for this man. he is absolutely a God given gift to the world
I had the great opportunity to see Lionel and The Commodores, along with Wild Cherry, and LTD, in Little Rock Ark. We left that show, exhausted from dancing. It's a show I'll never forget.
Lionel Richie was my first concert, in 1984, so his music is a mental time machine for me. My 5’er… plus… 6. The Only One 5. Love Will Find A Way 4. Still 3. My Love 2. Sail On (original version) 1. Still In Love - this song means so much to me, that it was the second song that my wife and I danced to at our wedding. Great video, Adam!
It’s tough to pick a favorite Lionel Richie song! “Say you,Say me” is one of my favorites! “Stuck on You” , “Penny Lover” , “Running with the night” , “Love will conquer all “, Love them just as much!
The song I can listen to the most, and always makes me smile is the Commodores - Lady (You Bring Me Up). This is especially true accompanied by the video. Truly is a hard list to limit to 5 song. Just so many, that you can make an argument, to put on the list.
Love Lionel Richie's music. His solo work and with The Commodores, he recorded so many great songs. He deserved such a great episode to look back at his great catalog of music. Well done! Adam, on another subject, could you please do a tribute episode to the Everly Brothers? Over this past weekend, Don Everly died. His younger brother Phil died back in 2014. The Everly Brothers were one of the most important pioneers of 1950s rock (along with Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly, Little Richard, and Jerry Lee Lewis). They influenced so many artists including The Beatles, The Beach Boys, and Simon & Garfunkel. Along with the Doo-Wop groups, vocal harmonies in rock started with the Everly Brothers. Anyway, love your channel as you consistently spotlight so many of my favorite songs, albums and artists. You bring back such great memories.
Easy was the first ballad I heard that could have a GREAT guitar solo. I'm Still a rock guy, but it definitely gave me an open mind about other genres.
Wasn't this song covered by another band that scored a hit with it again somewhere between 2000 and 2010? When I heard it I knew I knew the song, but I didn't know the original was from Lionel. 😊
You must have read my mind when you described the reason why you love Sail On. I didn’t need convincing. Lionel Richie should be a part of everyone’s playlist.
Definitely one of my favorite performers. It’s kind of a shame though that most ppl only know his 80’s hits and earlier. His latter work is pretty damn good as well. It just never gets played on the radio.
He is too kind, too genuine and too humble not to love... A brilliant artist and an even better human. P.s. Faith No More's version of Easy is.... Mind blowing!! Top 3 cover of all time, just WOW.
Lionel was HUGE in the 70's and 80's. I know I had all his records. Say You Say Me my fave, but gosh there were so many hits and it started for me with Commodores Brick House in the 70's and Three Times a Lady with those amazing Lionel vocals.
I met Lionel & Jimmy Connors just after Connors had won Wimbledon 🎾 in 1982 at Carneys on Sunset. They were both way cool & interested in our " punk rock " fashions !
Brick House. Now, I know today that song would be cancelled, not released, or perhaps not even written, but it was my first Commodores song that I ever heard, I’m 53. It was just an extremely fun sounding song.
I love stories of songwriters…I saw an interview with Lionel and they asked him what song he wished he could have written and he said “Your Song” by Elton John
Writing hits is one thing....writing GREAT Songs is another thing. Like few others, Lionel Richie wrote great hits that helped people get through difficult times by writing exactly what we needed to hear and have that ability to put it in a song just for you. Oh No and Still were two of those songs. I was lucky enough to hear those songs not only with my ears, but with my heart. A Great artist indeed.
"Running With The Night" always brings back memories of my first love in high school. I was a Senior and she was a Freshman. I graduated and went on to college and she moved to another town but we kept in touch, even though our families were not happy with our relationship. She invited me to a football game at her new school and I drove down from college to meet her. We had to sneak around because her brother was at the game and would tell on us. We were sneaking away, cutting through the empty, dimly lit band hall and I tripped and knocked over a drum that rolled and made all kinds of racket. "Running With The Night" became our theme song after that. Unfortunately, we went our "Separate Ways" and lost track of each other. Life moved on...
Yes, Lionel Richie was definitely a major element of the soundtrack of my life. His work with The Commodores was great, but those first three solo albums, especially "Can't Slow Down", were timeless! In fact, there is not one bad track on "Can't Slow Down", but my all time favorite song on that album is one that was never released as a single, "Love Will Find a Way."
Great video Professor. Love Lionel Richie. Easy is one of my all time favorite songs. You just gotta sing that song when it comes on the radio. Love your channel. Keep up the great content!
So glad that you mentioned the solo for Easy. Even though I play a lot of shred guitar I can't help but slow it down just for that solo. It's just so tasty and smooth.
Thanks Professor for the Great story. Lionel is a talented well gifted artist. such good songs. he dominated the 80's. I remember back in the MTV and VH1 days the video in 84 "Hello" and Phil Collins "against all odds"(Take a look at me now) were played alot. Seen Lionel 5 years ago at a outdoor venue concert and he still sounded great. and hasn't aged either 🙂
I remember first meeting Lionel at Auburn University fraternity row where the Commodores were playing the fraternity house next to the frat house we were playing. Some years and a few hits later we provided outdoor sound for the Commodores at 6 Flags in Atlanta. Some years and a few hits later, I worked the Dancing on the Ceiling tour as a crew person. I have nothing to say bad about Lionel and I would send best wishes to Topper, too.
I think the Commodores are one of the most talented soul and funk bands with and without Lionel Richie and can't slow down and the follow up dancing on the ceiling got me into funk and soul and r and b
One of the great things for me about USA for Africa and the "We are the World" sessions was the way so many Motown stable mates ended up reconvening in the same place to record the song. My 5 year old self didn't pay attention to that, but the adult me certainly did. " Easy" is one tune that I not only sang along to but have performed on stage with a couple of groups.
Admittedly I'm usually listening to the Faith No More cover but yes, I do indeed vocalise the Easy solo every time. Thanks for validating our over enthusiasm for music again, Therapist of Rock :)
Professor you used the word sophistication... yes, Lionel is the epitome of sophistication! I agree with your top 5, but I also love the funky Brick House by The Commodores and Do It To Me from Lionel´s 1992 Back to front greatest hits package. Do it to me is like silk to the ears... very sexy without being crass and vulgar. It is a joy to hear you share stories from your younger self, professor. Thanks for an amazing video!
I grew up listening to Lionel Richie because my dad listened to his music. My dad always used to say "Lionel Richie is THE man". Fantastic artist (who deserves the word "artist") with timeless songs 👍. You know you're a great talent when you're successful both in a band and as a solo artist. He is one of my favorite songwriters. I really like the "Tuskegee" album because once again it showed Richie's songwriting skills. You can sing those songs in a country format and they still sound good because the melodies always stand out.

Sail on down the line
Ain't it funny how the time can go
All my friends say they told me so
But it doesn't matter
It was plain to see that
A small town boy like me
Just wasn't your cup of tea
I was wishful thinking
I changed those lyrics and it gets me almost every time especially after losing my 26 year old son Jake
I hear the lyrics as
Sail on down the line
Ain't it funny how the time can go
My grandma Sarria told me so
But I never listened
It was plain to see that
A big city boy like me
Just wasn't their cup of tea

Brick House. Now, I know today that song would be cancelled, not released, or perhaps not even written, but it was my first Commodores song that I ever heard, I’m 53. It was just an extremely fun sounding song.
Ikr love that song.
He, Mr. Professor- How did "Hello" not even make the honorable mentions? That's high on my list.
...you DID see the 'Bust' of Lionel, in the "Hello" Vid, right!? ...points OFF!! ...ha-HAA!! >juskiddin
Brick House wasn't on the list either.
Just heard some sad news
Charlie Watts -The Rolling Stones’ drummer -passed away at age 80
RIP, Charlie ✌️
@Anton 2.0 I don’t need friends that don’t get what a POS Dump is 👍
"Running With The Night" always brings back memories of my first love in high school.
Night shift is a great song!! Dancing in the ceiling, all night long ,say you say me, stuck on you, hello.... Thats it!! Period... Huge hits!
Night shift........ Beautiful melody.......
Another glorious Professor of Rock geek out video .. well deserved simping for sure!
timeless artist. what a gifted musician. you can see his influence into music to this day.
🎼🎵🎶🎹🎷🎤 I called *Lionel Richie* just from the thumbnail & title!!!
He's one of the best songwriters & a great singer as well!!! 🎤🎷🎹🎶🎵🎼
"Love Will Conquer All" is my favorite. I listen to it almost everyday.
Great video Professor. Love Lionel Richie. Easy is one of my all time favorite songs. You just gotta sing that song when it comes on the radio. Love your channel. Keep up the great content!
God I love Lionel Ritchie! Danced to All Night Long at my wedding! Faith No More does a very faithful version of Easy.
I think this one of my favorite videos. I love all of them but your are right . Lionel Richie is a great song writer !!
Thank you for this! Love you, brother!
Lionel Richie is one of the BEST!!!
Great band, great artist.
Thank you for all your videos!
Thank you! I thought I was going crazy when I heard All Night Long on the radio and thought it was missing something.
My Lionel Richie 5’ver is
1 All Night Long
2 Sail On
3 Brick House
4 Easy
5 Dancing on the ceiling
Great video Professor! Always enjoy your content
I saw The Commodores on their 1981 "In The Pocket" tour in Indianapolis at Market Square Arena. Lionel and the guys were on-point! What a show!
I think the Commodores are one of the most talented soul and funk bands with and without Lionel Richie and can't slow down and the follow up dancing on the ceiling got me into funk and soul and r and b
“Remember that time you tried to rip me off by cashing my checks dad???”
“Ahhh what a funny story son”
“Good times”
No hard feelings, son
My favorite song Lady was written by a guy they did not he could write song and had no music theory background. Amazing!
'Ballerina Girl' will always be my favourite song from Lionel.
"Say you say me'' and ''Dancing on the ceiling'' were always my favorates of his.
LIONEL!!! Great output, great video subject as always, Adam! Take care!
Thank you for watching!
Love the song “Easy” like Sunday morning!
It really brought it all together.
The. Best. Love his music always
You can't stay sad when Lionel is singing.
Always loved his songs Penny Lover and Ballerina Girl.
Nothing like "Still", "Easy" and "Three Times A Lady" to remind one of slow dancing at Junior High parties....
