This is all really a no-brainer. It's exactly as I said. You can look it all up yourself. Studio time is well-documented, no less. I'm a big Jimi Hendrix fan and when someone mentions Jimi and my birthday I especially look it up, plus Fripp's story is ridiculous. Jimi didn't talk like that to other musicians--it's so corny I can't believe Fripp faked that, plus Jimi never had his arm in a sling. In other threads here I put even more information because another guy online caught it because he had just read a Hendrix book where they talked about Jimi in the studio at this time. Great thing about Robert is that, very early on, he realized that playing guitar music could be taken WAY beyond the obvious pop group confines, into all the orchestral, celestial influences that could brought into one's mind. To Fripp, music is as much color, taste and touch as it is sound vibrations. He was virtually born to create great cinematic soundscapes, and probably would have found a way to do so, even if he'd been a guitarist of 1900.
I had the pleasure of meeting Robert at Peaches in Ft. Lauderdale on his "Frippertronics" tour. He graciously took the time to meet everyone afterwards, and I had brought my 'Exposure' album for him to sign, which he happily did. He stuck out his right hand to thank me for coming that evening (!) and for purchasing his record. Having read about this encounter, I smiled and offered him my other hand, saying: "Shake my left hand, it's closer to my heart". He smiled broadly, and switched hands. :-)

why is it a point of contention that Hendrix would be enthralled by Fripp. Any studied musician/historian can see how the jazz/blues virtuosity of Fripp's playing plus the trippy/classical/traditional arrangements of Ian McDonald would appeal to Jimmy who was pushing boundaries. He was a seeker and Krimson were as well.

If you don't believe me you should compare what was happening there to Miles Davis's Bitches Brew or Mahavishnu Orchestra or Return to Forever or other Jazz Fusion bands that were out around that time. Yeah King Crimson never sounded like "Kind of Blue" but they delved DEEP into Jazz theory and arrangements.

Onimyst It's called doing research, listening to everything, and everyone who actually knew him. It's also pretty easy to recognize bullshit, especially with something so stupid as his arm being in a sling or talking he way Fripp claims. Fortunately, in Jimi's short career, his arm was never in a sling. Fortunately, on May 14, 1969 Jimi was recording a very nice instrumental with Lonnie Young in New York, while Fripp was playing very nice guitar in England. Personalities aside I love the way many British speak and tell stories. They are so eloquent and witty with a tongue in cheek so cleverly disguised. Even tidbits like "I've intruded on your patience for long enough" bring a smile. Hendrix always seemed to effuse praise when it was deserved. I agree with this assessment about King Crimson. Their compositions are so rich and interwoven.
I agree; the dates may be incorrect, after all, it has been over 40 years! Whatever anyone may feel about Fripp being a "pompous whatever" he is a brilliant musician and did not need Hendrix's approval. It was a great endorsement nonetheless and something to be proud of. Thelonesniper101 I think he is conflating the dates- I think it was later in 1969, perhaps after In The Court was released, when Jimi wasn't touring in the USA and was hanging out in London. I am relatively sure Fripp would have no reason to make up such a story.
I don’t think he did get the dates wrong, he tells the story of shaking jimi’s hand then say’s in 1981 he met Loretta whom he hadn’t seen in around 12 years and she reminds him of the time he met jimi which would put it around 1969 or earlier
Years ago I had the privilege of meeting and chatting with R Fripp at a Frippertronics concert for WXPN in Phila, that where held in a small music room. No photos or autographs, but he was very nice and open to talk with. He started the show by explaining and demoed the FT setup, reel to reels. During the show, after a song or two, he announced that this is the question and answer portion. Everyone just sat and stared at him, so I blurted out, Mr Fripp what does your pedal broad and effects consist of. He went into great detail about his equipment and un plugged and handed me his volume pedal, for me and others to inspect. It had no makers name, he said he had it since KK days. I was very lucky to sit in the first row, a few feet away from him, at times, I could actually hear the notes he picked on his LP Black Beauty, before he let up on the volume pedal. At another time in the show he asked for someone to shout out a chord, that he would play in. Someone yelled E minor, to which he smiled and said that's my favorite, then he wailed away on his Les Paul, with its incredible tone, seated like a mushroom. A really cool and intimate show, much dif than the many KK shows I have attended.

Jim I Hendricks was a kind, loving, conchise , compassionate , person is what I gather from stories of others that met him. Obviously raised by great American parents, in a time when true talented musicians spoke, sang and wrote to teach of the same values to a future generation. Also to warn us; now as parents, the social destruction we may face if not afforded the simple discipline of the message. A message afforded us, now the future, from other great leaders, musicians and others. Teach your children well, their parents hell. Seems we missed the mark in many ways.
Fripp was a master and fanatic about his tone and sound - he wasn't just bashing powerchords through a fuzzbox, etc., like many rock guitarists of that era. So Hendrix would have been blown away by Fripp's technique, sound, and the unbelievable tightness of KC!
It was indeed nothing short of incredible. I've been to a lot of shows over the years and their performance is easily one of my favorite concerts ever.
Robert Fripp tells that his band was playing at the Revolution Club in 69, Jimi Hendrix approached him asking to shake his left hand ! My problem is that the only date of a King Crimson concert in 69 at the Revolution Club is May 14 when Jimi was in the USA. I don't want to question this meeting between Fripp and Hendrix. It is obviously difficult to confirm a date after 50 years ! Robert may have been confused with the name of the club or even the year. But it is certain that Jimi was in the USA from mid-March to mid-July 1969.
According to this video, Hendrix didn't tell the band that. He said it to someone at the table next to him, who related it to Fripp years later. Anyway, Hendrix was probably an enthusiast and at that moment may well have said that. If you sat down with him in a quiet place some time later and asked him who the greatest bands were, he might not even have mentioned King Crimson.
I love the fact that Fripp always sat when he played seriously. The most studied demonstration was during Bowie's Low tour. DB had done a good set (it was the add-on day at Madison Square Garden) and there was a curtain on stage. We thought "Props?". No, they opened the curtain and there was a small orchestra on stage...and then they brought on a podium, and Carlos Alomar took up a baton..and then they brought out a stool! We freaked. I think I hollered "Oh my God, they're bringing FRIPP out!", and out he came, to play "Heroes"....
That's amazing, the 60s was a great time, I don't care what anyone says, even though I was born in 91. There must be hundreds of musicians with Hendrix stories -- Ronnie Wood, Eric Clapton and Chris Squire among others.
I love Crimson for what they are, but I still get amazed at their image. Clean cut, smart, polite, smily, yet their music is sometimes dissonant grunge that would shame any pop show. That's how genius works I guess.
Peter Gabriel talked about having "In The Court of the Crimson King" pinned to the wall of the house they wrote/rehearsed their first album in, for inspiration.
Fripp is so erudite. In one interview I've seen he goes off on a tangent into philosophy that is way, way over my head, and I'm fairly well educated. I hope he writes an autobiography if he hasn't already. I'm sure it would be amazing.
Love how Fripp just flat out does not wear the "rock star" persona that like most successful musicians do, I can't think of anyone as humble, maybe Rush.......
Love it! I produced MTV's Hendrix documentary ("rockumentary) and did the interview with Fripp he references. Fripp lit up telling the story (see Relayer6a's comment).
I have that rockumentary on VHS somewhere. I was probably 13 and just discovering the music of Hendrix, so that program came along at the perfect time for me. Thank you for your work!
I got to see jimi and the Experience play with Soft Machine in Shreveport, La . I had just moved there from Turkey , Nd went to a teen club, and these young guys were playing inagodagadiva, baby. And they told me the most amazing guy was going to play the next day. So I got my dad to give me ticket money . It was my first concert , I was 12. Soft Machine was amazing, the loudest band Ive to this day ever heard. And then The Experience came out , and did an intro, and then Hendrix strolled out and Blew my mind. I later read the reason he was in Shreveport, was because the stadium they booked in Texas wouldn't let an integrated band have the stage. And then met Fripp when he was touring around D.C. showing people how to do Frippertronics. A couple of reel to reels and a guitar.

As a student who just graduated highschool whether you believe it or not there was a question on the texas state assesment test the STAR test that told this story and had the students correct grammatical errors in it. But it read out the same way calling kc the greatest band ever. This is not the kinda shit i would make up, i was just vas surprised when i saw something with robert fripp on the test.
They definitely have interesting stuff on the standardized tests but I'm still surprised they had such a specific story. I learned about Ulysses (the James Joyce book) and the theremin from ACT tests. One of my roommates told me the ending of 2001: A Space Odyssey was spoiled for him from an ACT test too.
My Robert Fripp story. The Ram's Head Tavern Annapolis, MD. Robert sitting by himself 20 ft away from us sipping a cup of tea. No guitars, amps, pedals or anything on the stage. Robert very calmly took the stage and let us know that his gear was stuck at the airport. In his calm cool manner he proceeded to read us his email in the meantime. Emails from Adrian Belew etc. When his gear arrived, his roadie was lightening quick, and Robert amazed us with his soundscapes. Great Show.
Crazy, it's like Peter Ebdon talking on Ronnie O'Sullivan. One's got a heart (actually the only thing Fripp says about Hendrix), the other takes the greatest care not to show or even hint at the possibility he's got a heart.

Totally agree, after all these 50 years Crimson had always shown their supremacy on stage. Perhaps in some 72-75 years some progressive bands could match Crimson shows. Now in 2018 I can tell you that all those bands are gone or shows a very little of those years, BUT I saw Crimson in México last year on 2 of 4 Sold out concerts and they were amazing and 69- until new songs sounded even better. Chicago's then manager, James William Guercio, said in an interview that Jimi told this to him while they were on tour together. If you listen to Terry wail, it's not hard to see why Jimi may have felt that way. Both were masters of their craft. I know Jimi mentioned on the Tonight Show that Gibbons would be the next hottest guitarist, yet Jimi lauded many of the preeminent, contemporary guitarists of his era.
the older I get the sadder I get the Jimi isn't still with us. I can't even imagine how his friends and family feel. People tell the stories of when they met a guy who died at 27. How would it be if he was able to go on, break new boundaries, see in funk, punk, skunk and all the other junk that has come since he has gone? Many of his contemporaries still play. Had he lived he may still be playing with an extra 48 years of guitar playing under his belt.

This sounds 1000% more genuine than most Hendrix stories. "Shake my left hand, man, it's closer to my heart" could have been a Hendrix lyric.

Onimyst It's called doing research, listening to everything, and everyone who actually knew him. It's also pretty easy to recognize bullshit, especially with something so stupid as his arm being in a sling or talking he way Fripp claims. Fortunately, in Jimi's short career, his arm was never in a sling. Fortunately, on May 14, 1969 Jimi was recording a very nice instrumental with Lonnie Young in New York, while Fripp was playing very nice guitar in England. I don't detract from Fripp's guitar playing, just his fantasy stories. ((:

I was lucky enough to have seen both Jimi and Crimso and was impressed on both occasions.

Personalities aside I love the way many British speak and tell stories. They are so eloquent and witty with a tongue in cheek so cleverly disguised. Even tidbits like "I've intruded on your patience for long enough" bring a smile. Hendrix always seemed to effuse praise when it was deserved. I agree with this assessment about King Crimson. Their compositions are so rich and interwoven.
Fripp isn't lying, he's not the type. He may be getting the date wrong, but he's not lying.

Thelonesniper101 I think he is conflating the dates- I think it was later in 1969, perhaps after In The Court was released, when Jimi wasn't touring in the USA and was hanging out in London. I am relatively sure Fripp would have no reason to make up such a story.
I don’t think he did get the dates wrong, he tells the story of shaking jimi’s hand then say’s in 1981 he met Loretta whom he hadn’t seen in around 12 years and she reminds him of the time he met jimi which would put it around 1969 or earlier
Years ago I had the privilege of meeting and chatting with R Fripp at a
Frippertronics concert for WXPN in Phila, that where held in a small
music room. No photos or autographs, but he was very nice and open to
talk with. He started the show by explaining and demoed the FT setup,
reel to reels. During the show, after a song or two, he announced that
this is the question and answer portion. Everyone just sat and stared at
him, so I blurted out, Mr Fripp what does your pedal broad and effects
consist of. He went into great detail about his equipment and un plugged
and handed me his volume pedal, for me and others to inspect. It had no
makers name, he said he had it since KK days. I was very lucky to sit
in the first row, a few feet away from him, at times, I could actually
hear the notes he picked on his LP Black Beauty, before he let up on the
volume pedal. At another time in the show he asked for someone to shout
out a chord, that he would play in. Someone yelled E minor, to which he
smiled and said that's my favorite, then he wailed away on his Les Paul, with its incredible tone, seated like a mushroom. A really cool and intimate show, much dif than the many KK shows I have attended.
What a great account by Fripp, probably the best articulated memory ever spoken too.
A beautiful and simple remembrance told by a truly great guitarist/musician who had, and continues to have, a profound impact upon me. King Crimson was not just a great band; it had a depth of lyrical and musical conception combined with a level of technical execution which is just as artistically fresh and valid today as 45 years ago.

Except it's not true. Fripp made up this story. I keep posting this because it makes me mad. You can't always believe musician's stories. Jimi was in NYC recording and touring in May '69 around the US. He was not in England. There was nothing wrong with Jimi's arm--he was touring and recording at that very moment King Crimson was playing at the Revolution club on May 14, 1969. Jimi was with Larry Young, Billy Cox, and Buddy Miles on May 14th, 1969 recording a jam in NYC. It's well documented because they have the music and all those dated recording studio sheets. So wrong of Fripp to make this up or he's delusional. (I wrote a slightly more detailed separate post.) Plus it's so easily verifiable. Goes to show you shouldn't believe everything a favorite musician says--they have faulty memories. But Fripp is nowhere close on this one except the date King Crimson played. It's a shame Guitar Player magazine quoted this Fripp story when it took me two seconds to look at Jimi's tour history and the recordings.

Jim I Hendricks was a kind, loving, conchise , compassionate , person is what I gather from stories of others that met him. Obviously raised by great American parents, in a time when true talented musicians spoke, sang and wrote to teach of the same values to a future generation. Also to warn us; now as parents, the social destruction we may face if not afforded the simple discipline of the message. A message afforded us, now the future, from other great leaders, musicians and others. Teach your children well, their parents hell. Seems we missed the mark in many ways.

Fripp was a master and fanatic about his tone and sound - he wasn't just bashing powerchords through a fuzzbox, etc., like many rock guitarists of that era. So Hendrix would have been blown away by Fripp's technique, sound, and the unbelievable tightness of KC!
It was indeed nothing short of incredible. I've been to a lot of shows over the years and their performance is easily one of my favorite concerts ever.

Robert Fripp tells that his band was playing at the Revolution Club in 69, Jimi Hendrix approached him asking to shake his left hand ! My problem is that the only date of a King Crimson concert in 69 at the Revolution Club is May 14 when Jimi was in the USA. I don't want to question this meeting between Fripp and Hendrix. It is obviously difficult to confirm a date after 50 years ! Robert may have been confused with the name of the club or even the year. But it is certain that Jimi was in the USA from mid-March to mid-July 1969.
Jimi told every band that they were the greatest in the world. Thats just the guy he was.
According to this video, Hendrix didn't tell the band that. He said it to someone at the table next to him, who related it to Fripp years later. Anyway, Hendrix was probably an enthusiast and at that moment may well have said that. If you sat down with him in a quiet place some time later and asked him who the greatest bands were, he might not even have mentioned King Crimson.
I love the fact that Fripp always sat when he played seriously. The most studied demonstration was during Bowie's Low tour. DB had done a good set (it was the add-on day at Madison Square Garden) and there was a curtain on stage. We thought "Props?". No, they opened the curtain and there was a small orchestra on stage...and then they brought on a podium, and Carlos Alomar took up a baton..and then they brought out a stool! We freaked. I think I hollered "Oh my God, they're bringing FRIPP out!", and out he came, to play "Heroes"....

That's amazing, the 60s was a great time, I don't care what anyone says, even though I was born in 91. There must be hundreds of musicians with Hendrix stories -- Ronnie Wood, Eric Clapton and Chris Squire among others.

I love Crimson for what they are, but I still get amazed at their image. Clean cut, smart, polite, smily, yet their music is sometimes dissonant grunge that would shame any pop show. That's how genius works I guess.
Peter Gabriel talked about having "In The Court of the Crimson King" pinned to the wall of the house they wrote/rehearsed their first album in, for inspiration.

Fripp is so erudite. In one interview I've seen he goes off on a tangent into philosophy that is way, way over my head, and I'm fairly well educated. I hope he writes an autobiography if he hasn't already. I'm sure it would be amazing.

I have that rockumentary on VHS somewhere. I was probably 13 and just discovering the music of Hendrix, so that program came along at the perfect time for me. Thank you for your work!

I got to see jimi and the Experience play with Soft Machine in Shreveport, La . I had just moved there from Turkey , Nd went to a teen club, and these young guys were playing inagodagadiva, baby. And they told me the most amazing guy was going to play the next day. So I got my dad to give me ticket money . It was my first concert , I was 12. Soft Machine was amazing, the loudest band Ive to this day ever heard. And then The Experience came out , and did an intro, and then Hendrix strolled out and Blew my mind. I later read the reason he was in Shreveport, was because the stadium they booked in Texas wouldn't let an integrated band have the stage. And then met Fripp when he was touring around D.C. showing people how to do Frippertronics. A couple of reel to reels and a guitar.
You're so lucky to watch them live. I wasn't even alive at that time but i wish i was. Have you ever heard of Kerim Çaplı? If im not mistaken he played the drums for jimi hendrix at that concert

Then he would say, “I don’t know you’ll have to ask Roy Buchanan or Rory Gallagher, or Eric Clapton,. “You plug in the name of the Name of the artist, or group.

As a student who just graduated highschool whether you believe it or not there was a question on the texas state assesment test the STAR test that told this story and had the students correct grammatical errors in it. But it read out the same way calling kc the greatest band ever. This is not the kinda shit i would make up, i was just vas surprised when i saw something with robert fripp on the test.

They definitely have interesting stuff on the standardized tests but I'm still surprised they had such a specific story. I learned about Ulysses (the James Joyce book) and the theremin from ACT tests. One of my roommates told me the ending of 2001: A Space Odyssey was spoiled for him from an ACT test too.

My Robert Fripp story. The Ram's Head Tavern Annapolis, MD. Robert sitting by himself 20 ft away from us sipping a cup of tea. No guitars, amps, pedals or anything on the stage. Robert very calmly took the stage and let us know that his gear was stuck at the airport. In his calm cool manner he proceeded to read us his email in the meantime. Emails from Adrian Belew etc. When his gear arrived, his roadie was lightening quick, and Robert amazed us with his soundscapes. Great Show.

That's interesting. Thanks for sharing. All I was trying to say before is that I think the stuff that Hendrix played was very progressive already. I think some of it is ahead of time even now. I would have loved to see what he would have done had he lived longer though.

Love Robert Fripp and King Crimson is easily one of the best bands I ever saw perform (spring 1972) so Jimi's critic was certainly accurate.

I never would have guessed aforehand that Hendrix might even like the structuredness of the almost mathematically playing Robert Fripp/KC. So this nicely detailled little snaprell of sound is quite eyeopening, in more than a single respect . Thanks for sharing this Blue Wild unfallen Angel!

Totally agree, after all these 50 years Crimson had always shown their supremacy on stage. Perhaps in some 72-75 years some progressive bands could match Crimson shows. Now in 2018 I can tell you that all those bands are gone or shows a very little of those years, BUT I saw Crimson in México last year on 2 of 4 Sold out concerts and they were amazing and 69- until new songs sounded even better. Congratulations Robert and all the musicians involved in Crimson over the years.0

Chicago's then manager, James William Guercio, said in an interview that Jimi told this to him while they were on tour together. If you listen to Terry wail, it's not hard to see why Jimi may have felt that way. Both were masters of their craft. I know Jimi mentioned on the Tonight Show that Gibbons would be the next hottest guitarist, yet Jimi lauded many of the preeminent, contemporary guitarists of his era.

the older I get the sadder I get the Jimi isn't still with us. I can't even imagine how his friends and family feel. People tell the stories of when they met a guy who died at 27. How would it be if he was able to go on, break new boundaries, see in funk, punk, skunk and all the other junk that has come since he has gone? Many of his contemporaries still play. Had he lived he may still be playing with an extra 48 years of guitar playing under his belt.
