South Western Railway (SWR) Class 458/4 Junipers Passing Micheldever & Eastleigh on Test - 11/10/23

- Video: A compilation of two test/mileage runs of the newly refurbished/converted SWR Class 458/4 Coradia Juniper units (458407 & 458417 - 8car) seen passing through Micheldever and Eastleigh stations, working between Bournemouth Depot and Basingstoke station.
I had hoped to catch them passing at their reinstated full speed of 100mph (hence why I chose to visit Micheldever), but the line was very congested that day.

First time you see them hit speeds such as this in years
They look really good reminds me of a wasp with the dark and yellow colour scheme at the front
Finally, SWR livery 458. Looks quite nice
Ah yes ive waited over 2 years to see their transformation!!
They can finally breathe and use their full acceleration capabilities.
Amazing
Wait a minute are they back to 4 cars
yes! I believe it's a tradeoff to allow them to operate at 100mph, making them more suitable for mainline services
@@secretmanPFD That is exactly what it is
@pycnn it's exactly that. They have worse acceleration with 5 cars because they didn't add extra motors onto them
Yep back to four to allow for 100mph Mainline use
Do they have to go through some sort of recertification process as they've had changes made to them (not just a cosmetic refurb)?
Errrr no tail lights? 1:29 also, that little bit of grey-blue on the front of the units make them look ugly
Someone's going to be in trouble.
Tail lights ? Or just the camera
No, the tail lights were out. Not sure if it was a driver error or if they stopped working mid journey.
Will thay take the class 450 and the 444 of the Portsmouth line when the 458/4 enter service
Believe theyll take the 450 diagrams
The front kinda looks cursed
Wait, is it just me or did this happen?
Any chance the remaining 460 converts will become 458431 - 458436?
All the 460s converts will be withdrawn… IIRC it’s only the original 458 fleet staying/reforming to 4 cars
@@jeffrotino5895 will 458531 and 458536 be scrapped?
@@maimadhamost likely. It’s the end of the 460 in any form.
When are the 455s getting the livery
I don't think they will because they'll be replaced by the new Class 701 Arterio Aventras which have been long delayed for 4 years.
Nope their getting scrapped soon, purely based on the fact that the 701s are coming to replace them
They won't
When will they be in service?
No confirmed date, there are lots of rumours that they may get axed like the 442s and the GWR 769s, due to DfT service cuts.
