Much has been written about enigmatic Swedish theatrical metal band Ghost B.C.-"subversive," "refreshing," "blasphemous"-but even in all those countless reviews, interviews, and thinkpieces do we miss the words that properly incapsulate what it is about this clan of nameless ghouls that makes them so endlessly captivating, hooking listeners from the most disparate corners of music fandom.
With a live show that more closely resembles a pre-apocalyptic occult ceremony than anything you might refer to as a "concert," the collective, helmed by current harbinger Papa Emeritus II, delivers spiritual awakening and religious deviance to their devoted followers. In the first episode of Papaganda, our mini-series on the cult of Ghost B.C., we explore the papal lineage, the reign of Emeritus II, and the future of the Ghost dynasty.

When you realize that Tobias is the only one in this interview, speaking Italian as Papa, then speaking flawless English as the Ghoul... While being Swede...
I was just about to comment "isn't that Tobias as the 'lead guitarist' " lmao
@Si Kacamata Gila It is, he was playing Papa in these videos, and he has amazing language skills.
I hope papa 1 comes back home from getting cigarettes soon. He was the best
@mimi chan look at the lips. looks like a mask.
All, the Nameless Ghoul being interviewed, Papas in out of full costume. All him. Masks, makeup, languages, song writing, vocals, just about all the instruments in the studio recording
Papa: I'm like fine wine!
Ghoul: He's a miserable, old, wounded, bitter man.
Minute?
@@leexitto at 3:00
they said your name in one song! lol
should change the name to BCE hehehe
@@Ghost-of1kg 4:37 James Corden as chauffeur!

How did Tobias just turn into an old man?😭 My brain don't brain
He has a mask on. As he has with all the Papa's he pretends to be.
"We wanted Ghost to sound like the band you missed out on, but have been there for all this time."
Ghost was founded in 2008. This video was posted in 2013. It's 2017 and I wonder how I'm just now discovering Ghost.
Well done Ghouls. Well done.
Beat me... 2019 for myself lmao
@Nannett in.the.night hahaha, gotta say, that got me, wasn't expecting that lmao
Yeah I only found them in Feb 2018 when they popped up on YT. It's like "WTF, how did I miss this for so long?" Freshest band in over 20+ years IMO
2010 here...MySpace. Ghost forever.
I heard Mummy Dust playing in the store where I work, liked it and listened to it on it's own about a year ago. I then forgot about the band until recently when I decided to listen to Meliora in full. Have since listened to all 4 albums and gotten into a lot of the music videos, live shows and interviews on RUclips. Great stuff! I hope to go see them one day.
Haha, I love how he speaks in pseudo-Italian through the whole interview and then ends with "C'est la vie". These guys are just taking the piss and are enjoying that extremely.
yeah in the Herren bathroom
The line "I hope he read his contract" line is AMAZING viewed from the future. The universe really is the best writer
“I hope that he’s read his contract...”
Lmao I love the lore and intrigue, even now that we know the real names. The idea of Satanic popes and a big clergy operating underground that have in-jokes and drama is hilarious.
No one’s gonna mention he’s singing papa at 2:03?? I can’t with this band 😭😭
I'm shocked by metalheads who say the aren't really metal because of the clean vocals. Um Iron Maiden?? Judas Priest?? Black Sabbath???????? And there are so many speed metal, doom metal (which is what they're considered), and classic metal bands have clean vocals. It's not your style, okay...but why does that make it any less credible to those who actually like it. They're entertaining and the music is catchy, that's all that matters. They're putting on an act and they have fun with it. They don't take their act dead serious, and it's all for good fun. Get over it.
But they AREN'T metal, because they've said so themselves. Either way, yes their music is fucking good.
The whole growling thing was actually the death of metal.
Actually they do take their act very seriously; they are funny, yes, but they are also extremely strict in the way they portray themselves. Their music is very delicate and they are definitely the best songwriters of rock/metal we have had in the 21st century, but they are not making light-hearted music. I think their lyrics are mistook for a "old school horror song". Aside from that, though, the band is what it is. Metalheads always want a more metal band and more hardcore coming from them, even though they enjoy the melodic sound they bring; but Ghost have constantly said they're a rock 'n roll band. If their lyrics weren't 'satanic' they would not even mean a grain of salt to the metal community. Regardless, I do think there are elements of metal in their music and I also think that they are probably the only band of the 21st century that actually matters.
metal and death metal can be totally different yet the same... You can have Ozzy... A metal singer... and Then Corey Taylor.. very much different in vocals yet in the same genre... And you want anothersoft lyracist Meatloaf..
+Justin Coryell Dont you fucking dare compare Ozzy to that slipknot guy
"We wanted ghost to sound like the band you missed out on"
I first discovered Ghost in 2010 by chance by stumbling across 'Satan Prayer' on youtube. I was listening to a lot of old doom metal and just randomly clicked on it. I knew absolutely nothing about them. Between the album artwork and the music, I was genuinely convinced that I was listening to a band from the 70s/80s. I was instantly hooked and thought to myself "How the hell have I never heard of Ghost before?!". It was only afterward when I researched who they were that I realized they were a new band.
+Dylan Quinn I couldn't have said it better myself... Found them the same way, around the same time and have been enamored with Ghost ever since! Going to see them live the end of this month!
+Dylan Quinn Well put! I first came across them randomly clicking music videos in 2011, clicked on 'Ritual' and had there not been a huge 'GHOST" across the screen I was was sure I was listening to a Blue Oyster Cult track from the late 70s I had somehow missed.
They absolutely hit the note they were aiming for at that time, and even now in the reign of Papa III and Meliora, they still evoke the sound of a band that has been around far longer then 3 albums.
+Tom Wolfendale fjfjfjfjfjfjfjnfjfjcmff
i kept hearing about this "Pope" Papa Emeritus and so i researched Ghost. BOOM! listened to their first album and was hooked. it right before their 2nd album was released. soon became a superfan of Tobias Forge and started the #DrPhinOmen movement.
I heard them this fucking week, and showed my best friend and my brother and we all felt the same way.
Like, this sounds familiar but I've never fucking heard it. How have I never heard this?
He looks very intimidating as Papa Emeritus II. He gives me the chills.
Without the makeup he's Hitman after 20 years
that's actually just another mask

2:50 The really fun thing here is that he goes to the men's room. "Herren" is german for [gentle]men. Ghost is a Swedish band and in Swedish Herren means The Lord. So he basically goes to take a dump in The Lord's toilet. :-)
Or just toilet for men, in Germany. #foliehat
*****
Didn't I just write that? Quote "Herren" is german for [gentle]men. Unquote. What does it say outside of mens' toilets in English? Gentlemen!
well uh, where would you like him to take a dump? The ladies' room? lol
+Fredrik Bendz i think he was just trying to sneak up on her on purpose
+Fredrik Bendz maybe he understands both German AND Swedish
I remember when I first discovered this band. I had no idea about the prothetic mask and such, and I was shocked at how "old" Papa looked, as his voice sounded so much younger. But now, they are one of my favourite bands.
I don't know this band, but the coolest part was at the start when the guitar player gives that fan a fist bump. Fkn rock n' roll
Hell yeah was thinking the same thing.
Ween Fawn correction not rock n roll but heavy metal or metal
Ween Fawn heavy metal even though it doesn't sound like it
The theme is Ghost - Infestissumam
daniel s.rock and roll is both a genre and an attitude. The band has the attitude
The amount of jealousy I feel towards the guys in this band is immense. It's almost heartbreaking how much I want to be in a band like Ghost. If you have Ghost, you have everything
dude I feel the same but honestly fuck it I'm already starting a band who cares if you I get big as long as you're having fun
Lol like roky erickson. amazing reference.
Except your paycheck from the band, apparently
You should hear their cover.
You wouldn't any more if you knew how douchbag Mr. Forge is.
The live shots from 0:25 - 1:00 are absolutely majestic.

@@deeplake9769 what song was it in this video?
Currently going down a Ghost wormhole and loving it.
5 years later, do you still enjoy their work?
How stunningly brilliant is this? If there ever was a real Satanic church, it wouldn't look like Venom or Slayer, it would be the negative image of the Christian church, with it's own Pope and black fine linen robes instead of white and even with it's own hymns. Very smartly done. And the whole tongue in cheek vibe of these two Papaganda videos is absolutely perfect. Well done.
hrosemd There actually is a Satanic Church. It was founded in the 1960s by Anton Szandor LaVey in LA.
Chalon Davis pretty sure he means a Satanic church that actually deified Satan. Granted, Ghost is obviously taking the piss, but the aesthetics are all there. :)
There is and in red and black Google it!!
"but also because I just happen to love hard rock with a sexy beat"
Can't stop laughing.
The "ghoul" being interviewed is Tobias (Papa)
+Steelelives i'm pretty sure he does most the interviews
+tzDub92 yeah, the more interviews I see, the more I realize.
+Steelelives it's funny that he is talking about himself.... :D
Tobias and Omega ghoul (black guitar) do the most press.
+Steelelives do the singer really change? i think they all have them same voice...
I think the Nameless Ghoul they are interviewing is also Papa. He uses a fake accent on stage. He says Papa keeps getting younger. I wonder if that is a hint in the next iterations of the Emeritus mantle. Until finally he is himself wearing the paint with no prosthetics. It would sort of be an unmasking.......might be a few more years down the road though since they are still gaining steam across the world.
It is him, It sounds exactly like him when he sings.
Yep it's him,i noticed this when i started listening to these guys, but i don't care they're fucking amazing
Lazy Leo Now that Papa Emeritus III has emerged, yes he is just wearing face paint now.
Lazy Leo 6/7 months later with the second episode of papaganda the ''new'' papa has a perfect italian accent&pronunciation :3
Nah it's definitely still a prosthetic. Just a bit more streamlined and with hair.
Still can't believe that people don't understand what's going on! It is the same singer, both albums! Ghost has this playfull thing going on. Everything they say is tongue in cheek, and is a forecast of what's to come! I LOVE IT!!
Papa Heisenberg II
HAHAHAHAHAHA, YEP!
Lol
" I am the one who rocks"
Though I'm not that into the music, I LOVE that they've created this whole mystique with make-up fx and masks!! I hope more bands do stuff like this. The untapped potential in Art is SPECTACULAR!! Bringing visual and audio together in ever more creative ways. And giving religion and theism a good, swift kick in the teeth is a big plus too!!
I cried because what papa said about how he wasnt here in the beginning and wont be here at the end Im sad.
Aidan Xavier Glass It's the same guy though
Alex Porter But different persona.
Aidan Xavier Glass you cried? get a life.
Dude it was an expression so please *F@CK OFF*
Aidan Xavier Glass no, its not an "expression"...you also said, " im sad" ...thats an expression too then?
I really like the way the guitar player describes some of the primary concepts of the band. Very concise, yet clear.
I don't think it was on this video but an interviewer asked one of the Nameless Ghouls if he "believed in Satan"? His awesome response was: "The only thing that matters is that he believes in us."
2:55 imagine you are standing in front of a pissoir and papa comes in lol
Oh gosh!!!
I would've freaked!
zips up trousers instantly, bends over* "HAIL SATAN, my dark
eminence. Welcome year zero and praise archangelo!"
They are one of the most important bands in our time.. You must remember we are not in the 70's anymore. Back when we had the best Music ever. This is special. This is Ghost. Cheers!
Fucking brilliant. These guys understand. It's all about creating entertainment. I can eat popcorn to any video or album they make. The best.
He wears a mask + makeup? That's dedication.
They've got a number of masks. The "old man" being interviewed is the base mask. A high-quality silicon model with skintone colors applied. It looks quite realistic but you'll notice the lips don't move very accurately.
The stage makeup is a different mask of the same pattern but with the skull makeup permanently applied. I'm guessing they have several of them on-hand in case of a tear or whatever.
He does have to put makeup around his eyes and ears, though.
John Hagemann Yeah I just now found out he was wearing a mask as an old man!! They had me completely fooled LOL. I guess I wasn't paying that much attention. But after watching those videos of them performing in the studio without the "makeup mask" on you can totally tell. Crazy. great gimmick though...look how popular they got already and they only have like what...2 albums out?
downfan1 I'm not sure if you noticed, but the "Old Man" mask is the same as the skull mask he wears on-stage...but instead of the white and black skull paint, it's fairly high-quality skin tones.
It's fairly well-known who is under that mask. Indeed, I saw him in-person going into the backstage door while waiting in line in Chicago. Pretty cool. You know who it is, right?
Yeah that's crazy... I didn't even know until they said....now it's so obvious...
Who is it? I heard it's the singer of an old band called repugnant?
Can't stop loving this band
leonard cohen, dracula, phantom all mah boyz
Same because the song at 0:25 that i need to remember because I don't know what song it is at 0:25
he looks like a bald Stan Lee...
reminds me of Vincent price at the end of Dr. Phibes
I can’t unsee that now
"I wasnt here in the beginning, and unfortunately: i wont be here in the end."
This line kills me eternally knowing what happened to him..
Papa Emeritus outfit is absolutely perfect for halloween xD. Ghost totally kicks ass
Interesting how Papa Emeritus has a mustache without the makeup and it disappears when he's in full gear. Hmm...
+KrisFrosz133 they are a prosthetic mask, both his make-up'd face and the bald mustached head.
I thought so. Very clever!
they are all about anonymity do both are disguises.
at first i was like "that sexy voice is an old man wtf" lol but then i realized it's not his real face.
shouldnt the papa keep his identity secret? kinda new to this band and tryna understand
+woo wee Yes, it's a Ghost thing to keep their identities a secret. I just learned that the "skeleton" make up Papa Emeritus II wears is actually a mask that looks like his skin. You can see the openings of the mask in his outer ears. You can also purchase this official mask at a certain website.
Papa 1, 2, and 3 are all the same person.. it's pretty obvious if you listen to the albums. Same voice. It's clever though how he handles it all.. confusing the masses, just like the devil would do. :D
This was the best line up. I saw them 7 years in Dallas and they were amazing.
Sadly, they didnt do an "old age" make up on Papa's hands... My what young hands you have Papa :)
hes 32...wouldnt quite call him young
I keep looking into pervious eras and I wish I met him In this one. This Papa and these Ghouls(sexy outfits XD) look like the best one. I missed out on a great era. Seeing that post on FB pop up in my newsfeed that they won a Grammy was, when I got sucked into the universe. Now, I will only meet him after he passed. :'(
I heard square hammer on octane a few weeks ago and have been hooked since. I love the whole metal meets theater concept. When i heard square hammer it was like hey play that again. And so I went on RUclips and found it and literally played it over and over again until my step kids were about about ready to pull their hair out lol. I could not get enough. Then I found RATS and the horror meets dancing just sealed the deal for me.
this band is so powerful its awe inducing... hails from Brazil!
These guys need to tour with a small choir. So everything's huge and totally live. That would bring it to the next level.
Holy shit I love this band. I've always been a fan of bands with a "gimmick"; Kiss, GWAR, The Misfits, etc. It's definitely a bonus when not only is the gimmick bad ass, but the band is so fucking good. When that ghoul said that they wanted Ghost to sound like the band you missed out on, I thought that was the perfect description. They sound new and old at the same time. BTW: I just listened to them for the first time like 2 hours ago. Mind. Fucking. Blown.
i love ghost,,great band,,great theatrics and great music..:)
Love the mystery of it all, the aesthetic, the sound, everything. Long live Papa Emeritus II!
I can not POSSIBLY love this band more than I already do ! xxx Thanks so much to the guys for this gift of music!
There's a Grammy, if not several Grammies, waiting for these guys that's for sure.
***** Agreed, you're right it does suck that Ghost will most likely be ignored.
***** 1. TWD isn't horror.
2. The writing has been pretty bad ever since season 1 ended.
3. The actors are pretty meh. Some are pretty good but most are just decent (or just really fucking bad/annoying, like Rick and Carl.)
@@Kevalalalalalalalala why are you talking about The Walking Dead when they were talking about the band in this video?

Wow, watching this in 2022 knowing it's been Tobias all this time! It's so cool seeing how Ghost has progressed and gotten bigger and better over the years. I'm always amazed ❤️
Part 2 please!! The teaser photos were released in October, I'm dying waiting! Especially since Ghost is on break until January 17th.
come un buon vino: stagionato!! ahahaha già lo amo
King Diamond definitely has left a lot of influence.
Love this band, love the image, love the style, love the whole concept.
All the members that came together to form this project are amazing.
Ok but can we just appreciate how good those singing warm ups were.

We're reaaaally enjoy'd your golden years, dear Papa II!
:(
Man, the first phrase said in this video(with exeption of the introduction) is exatcly what i felt the first time i heard ghost "that banda that i missed but was always there".
That part at the end towards the end was a badass shot! Papa's menacing face and "I am the waaaaaaaaayy"
These guys are phenomenal. I really love these guys really grow on you.
Going to see Ghost for 1st time in October!!!
tarheeltx1 same I'm seeing them at aftershock music fest in Sacramento.
I'm seeing them tonight in salt lake
These videos were dope. Wish they made more
This band is exactly that of which I’ve seen and never would’ve listened to on my own til one of my friends played Cirice and the song blew my fucking mind. Huge fan since. Can’t get enough of Ghost.
I can't wait to see ghost in November! The excitement to be there and sing all their songs is real 👊🏼
it must take a lot to just be called nameless ghoul being a member in such a successful band. this is an example of pure art
how good wasn't that ending? "but hey, that's life" "c'est la vie" "I am the waaaaaay"
I needed so much more of Papa II speaking italian. I can't believe it's too late.
That fist bump in the beginning is always epic every time I see it. :)
I thought the same thing :)
Where is part 2?
These guys are having lots of fun
AHHHHH i can not wait to see them this Sunday!!
0:30 - "A Nameless Ghoul has detected your presence. That's called 'agro', I believe."
Speaking Italian for your character?! That is devotion. Or should I say, ceremony and devotion.
4:35 that's definitely Papa. Exact hand gesture he makes when keeping the rhythm live and just does it all the time.
Or I'm wrong.
I thought the exact same thing as soon as I heard the voice and came to the comments to see if anyone else had seen it. You're right about the hand movements too, when I saw them in London he also did it along with some of the synth lines in Monstrance Clock. It's definitely him!
@@ndrinks so hes a NG and PE? cant be two at once
this guy is definately one of my faves
The ending is my fav part when he says, C'est la vie and then they show a close up of his face, that glare and those eyes. il est tellement beau
This nameless ghoul gives himself away, not only with his voice, but especially his hand gestures. All the interviews I find, are with him, he has a very particular voice, and a fabulous vocabulary... when Papa does his little bit - the hands, the gesturing are the same..... Tricky ghoul. :) But in the end, who cares? I love the theatrics and artistry of the concept and the tunes.
I thought that at first, too, but after seeing some older live videos I am not so sure. Just by the way his hands look, you can tell that the same guy doing the interviews is also playing guitar live. I must say they have done an excellent job covering their tracks haha!!
There's a few clips of when Papa speaks to the fans during shows....his voice and what's the word, not accent - but mannerism of speaking make me think he's the most interviewed nameless ghoul too. I think to keep it fun they seem to like tricking us into speculating who is who. LOL
Tobias Forge is not Papa Emeritus. Papa Emeritus is Papa Emeritus, when you watch The Godfather, you watch Vito Corleone and not Marlon Brando, even though he portrays him, it's the character who drags your attention. It's quite "easy" to find some clues and theories about who's behind those masks but if you go that way then you're missing the whole point.
Hehe, fun rewinding these comments now :D
This episode was way better than episode 2.
This video made my day. These guys have a good sense of humour. I want to go see the show.
Damn, this is perfect.
Made me smile so much.
Seen Ghost twice and I can't wait to see them more as they are my most favourite band ever.
Why does it matter that he's Tobias Forge, I already know who he is and it doesn't bother me that I know.
Stop ruining the gimmick, I think that's what makes the band fun as well as the music being amazing.
I think it's very cool how they switch to the next singer after a little while. I wonder how many they'll go through before settling
This seems more realistic. I was wondering how they'd find people with similar vocals haha
*****
I've noticed that the most likely thing is they would "change" Papas when they change the style of makeup, such as from Papa E I, to Papa E II.
Travis Ryan Yeah, it's the same guy. That's part of their shtick. I saw him out of makeup at the show in Chicago last weekend. All the rumors are true.
***** Yup. I got a very good look at him.
Unless Tobias is a huge fan and shows up at all their shows...he's the man behind Papa.
I actually waited in line with a guy who partied with them the night before. While Tobias left before the real partying started he was there at the beginning. They're not really trying to hide it any more. They don't allow pictures out of costume but they're up-front about it. They hung mostly with Martin Persner, one of the guitarists. While we were waiting for the show to start he pointed out the bassist and drummer who were chatting with the soundboard guys.
It's basically the guys from Magna Carta Cartel and Subvision. Apparently they've had some "personnel changes" at the keyboard position but the rest of the band is pretty static.
And, yeah, please let me put this rumor to rest: Papa I is the same guy as Papa II and will be the same guy when Papa III comes around. If you can't figure out how they're both on-stage at the same time...I can't really help you.
***** Yeah, it's not a coincidence. A lot of fans get fired up about discussion of who's behind the band and I get that. It doesn't personally bother me. In my mind it's like, for example, Bruce Willis playing John McLean. I like the character even though I know it's Bruce Willis.
As long as they get on stage and play their hearts out and keep putting out awesome music and keep up the creepy, Satanic vibe I don't care if I find out that they've become boring suburbanites in their regular lives.
You know what really sucks? I live in Florida, and Ghost came here to Florida, and I knew about the concert, but at the time I wasn't all that into them. Now, Ghost had risen to become my currently favorite band. I wish I got into their music earlier. Great videos.
Tobias speaks perfect Italian. He must come to Italy for a Ritual. In Rome, perhaps, who knows.
Speaking Italian? I thought he was Swedish
He is. Papa knows a few languages.
Ghouls probably do as well. Although sometimes Papa dresses as a ghoul for interviews.
Its Latin
It is italian, it's my native language, but he has a strong foreign accent so he has probably studied the part. i would like to know more about it though
+Deus Culpa that makes a lot of sense!
I rember Norrköping i was standing right next to them two girls (the twins). That show really blew me away. I really liked ghostbht they took my heart after that show. Still love. Would love to meet them eye to eye. And I do hope for a part to 2 on this.
man i have to say that i'm a huge fan of the band.
since i knew that you1d com to Rock in Rio, i searched for the songs, learned them pretty quick cuz i was always listening to them.
been there in the show was one of the most incredible experiences of my life.
the musicians are incleadibles!
1:30 when he says "maybe you "heard" about the band..."
the way he says the word "heard" sounds just how papa sings lol
Part 2!
The House Of Masks did u know what the song in the beginning??
Infestissumam
that riff rips open my heart
Papa I is the same guy as Papa II. I could not see this band using someone else with such a unique vocal set. Great band and I am glad I saw them live.
