- Four hundred years of male domination came to an end today with the election of Carol Ann Duffy as poet laureate. She speaks to Charlotte Higgins on accepting the role
I know everyone seems to find her poetry boring but I personally find it amazing. I think she is quite courageous, to so openly express her views. Her writing is incredibly clever, she chooses every word specifically. I also disagree with the comment about every representation of a man being in a worse light. As an example, in Mrs Faust, the woman is actually in a worse light than the man; she is materialistic, selfish, cold and unfeeling, and there are many other examples too when you look.
Is this a hate-on-Carol-Ann-Duffy fest or what? I love her. Why even search her if you don't have anything nice to say?
"Four hundred years of male domination came to an end today with the election of Carol Ann Duffy as poet laureate." why can't we appreciate women without contrasting it to a hatred for men?
It was stating a fact.
So pleased at this choice - it's about time a woman achieves this post, and Carol Ann Duffy is such a fantastic poet :-)
Because of her! -_-
Teenagers are suffering.
Not because of her. Someone else could easily take her place. It isn't her fault that teenagers need to study poetry for English Literature GCSE and A-Levels etc. In addition, I realise this is my own opinion, but I would much rather learn about poetry than maths formula for example.
I went to the same school as Carol Ann Duffy - she was 2 years older than me.
I do not understand why Stafford do not appreciate their novelists and poets. Stafford Girl's High School has been shushed into a corner, never mentioned on their website, and even Charles Dickens felt put out by the cliquey Stafford attitude.
I had so much respect for her. Then I met her...
Amfran and? What is she like in real life? Please finish off the sentence. Please. You met her and?
Big deal.
@Yurikofirefly Actually, my study of her poems for English indicate that there is a very equal meaning to all her poems and that she usually portrays the women just as badly as the men. The one's where she openly 'slags off' men are the ones which the women come out seeming weak and vulnerable which is the opposite of what a feminist wants! So I'd say they're not always put in a worse light. it depends on the interpretation!
I left out the words of critics, tend to make some make some mistakes when upset by injustice.!
Is she James mays sister lol
I love the simplicity of her work 'A crow and a scarecrow' - of course there are some works I do not like - but then I just don't read them. if you are not fond of her work, find another poets work that you do like; it's as simple as that!
Stop coming onto UTube and posting your inner hatred out to the world:)
"I've only been able to do one thing today, and that's get totally shitfaced."
@CharlesCleary ,
Double edged chalice, something which has both great benefits and great downsides... not all together that difficult to understand.
Just like Gilbert O’Sullivan said, nothing rhymed
I love her poems by my lord this women is boring in real life!
i don't think looking through her eyes for a day would be boring
what happened to her scottish accent?
Read the poem originally and ye will find out
@@jordanthomson364 her tongue shedded itself like a snake.
She talks like she has too many teeth in her mouth - and she is completely toneless in life AND when "reading" her poetry ... Everyone thinks she is boring. She would do better to have someone else - an actor - read her poetry.
There's no need to be so rude
Oh, gosh! i don't like!:((
@Superape613 'Anne Hathaway' Not anti-man? Nope.
@markportus1
WOW......what brought this on?
hi
@CharlesCLeary you might be too lazy to look into more than the superficial
Rapture, while nothing less than scintillating, sadly became a bit too repetitive in the end. One can only do so much with the subject of love before it becomes staler than a damp old sock. Hardy knew what it was all about. On the other hand, she's the only woman, in my opinion, who can actually write decent fucking literature.
@view1210 you're just gutted because she tears into the institutions of your life, such as reading trashy tabloids and segregating minorities
Double edged chalice?????????
She speaks funny?
She’s Scottish but she’s obviously caught an English accent from being in England, so I think it’s a mix
@@monicaledger3768it sounds very british hah
I'm glad that whenever she reads about herself online all she hears is how bad she is
Boring,
How does it convey her feminist beliefs ?????/ Help
