In the pilot episode, Data could not whistle when Riker first meets him in the hollow deck
Yes.. he was on the holodeck with Wesley and Riker and he was whistling "Pop Goes the Weasel" couldn't get that last part😊
I was about to comment that myself 😂
I guess Data can't whistle, but Ira can. Data's inability to whistle might not be mechanical.
Yes it was obviously a flaw, as it's a known fact that Data cannot whistle or use contractions.
@@greenbrown7776 I could assume it's knowing how to do it - I know plenty of people who can't quite "get" whistling down properly. Especially young kids... probably also a good echo too.
I'm jealous that you get to watch these for the first time. I've seen them so many times and just keep coming back, I still can't understand why the writers of Star Trek now can't figure out this is what we want.
Because, unlike current "Trek", this show had writers and not activists pretending to be writers.
@@moviemetalhead Trek’s very origins were activist writers, did you ever even watch the original series. NBC used to get many letters from Southern viewers that went something like this “I love your show, it’s perfect, except for ‘that woman’ on the bridge” meaning Uhura. Racists felt more able to be explicit back then. Now they couch it in complaints about wokeness. But TOS had entire episodes about racism (Let That Be Your Last Battlefield), overpopulation (The Mark of Gideon), the waste and stupidity of war (A Taste of Armageddon, Errand of Mercy, The Omega Glory), the danger of organized religions (Return of the Archons), environmentalism and man wiping entire species off the face of the Earth (Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, directed by Leonard Nimoy). Star Trek at its heart and soul is activist. Complain that the new ST writing isn’t great story work if you want, but complaining about wokeness and activism just makes you look ignorant as that is the very heart and soul of Star Trek.
@@RLucas3000 nope, not a Trekkie, just liked TNG. Again, I'm sure these people knew how to write it into a story and not beat you over the head with "the message."
One, in the funeral scene remember they had no idea he was planning on implanting his personality into a computer.
Two, they’ve seen Data wrestle with human emotional situations like humor etc. I imagine they were all thinking his weird behavior was his attempt to mimic and explore the grief of losing a loved one.
Throwback to the pilot, Data can't whistle yet possessed Data is whistling up a storm.
Yeah, the writers missed that one.
@@OzBaxter Did they miss it or deliberately do a recall to show that Data was no longer "himself"?
@@maxshenkwrites I suspect the former but hope it was the latter.
I really miss these from thursday to monday.
Friday, Saturday and Sunday are hard days!
@@greenbrown7776- When have I ever anxiously awaited Monday before?
If you're looking to Trek reactions, I don't think what I'm about to propose will solve it, but I wonder if Josh and Alex would be amenable to doing Trek M, T, break with a completely different thing on W, then back to Trek on Th and F? That makes it so we have TA content five days a week and gives us the reaction for the second episode of the week on that Friday. It doesn't actually reduce the numbers of days we don't get Trek from them, but it would add another content day during the week during which they could play around with something completely different for a change of pace?
But, I also imagine they're pretty busy so I don't know if this is even feasible or something they would want to do.
Yeah, weekends suck now! Thanks Josh and Alex!
EVERY concern you address in your debate, gets answered, slightly or drastically, remember, this is a seven seasons show.
Nice to see the TA crew still counting TAS as Star Trek and not just a kids cartoon. If TOS and TAS had proper finales who knows how those shows would be regarded today.
Tracy Torme, son of Mel Torme, (The Christmas Song aka "Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire") was the lead writer at this time. He also was one of the creators and show runners for "Sliders."
One of the greatest musicians of all time. Brilliant, genius.. doesn't do him justice.
@@civwar054 And the reason the Brent Spiner is my third favorite Night Court guest star behind John Astin and not my second.
I want brent spiner to do a guest cameo on the night court remake
I've been wanting this too. I read an article yesterday that says that he will be.
Spiner and O’Donnell are in this weeks episode. Along with the actress that played Howard’s wife on the Big Bang theory. The Wheelers are back.
As A Media Tycoon!
Brent Spiner is in Independence Day?! Since I learned this yesterday, the last 24 hours have been really exciting!
I took the whistle as a cue for his confidence in having fooled everyone on the show. Like yeah now I'm safe.
I love how they keep low-key predicting things from future episodes, typically framed as, "One of things I'd like to see..."
Man, I did not remember that show trailers giving so much of the plot away. I guess we didnt find it annoying back then.
Main issue here is Data just got replaced by an imposter a few months ago, but it still takes a lot for anyone to catch on that there's something wrong.
I didn't have a problem with that. My favorite quote from Kurt Vonnegut's Breakfast of Champions: "Their imaginations were flywheels on the ramshackle machinery of the awful truth." It's just human nature to think everything is fine, no one has changed, and nothing is wrong when in truth, everything is about to go catastrophically wrong.
It's funny how they were a little iffy on the Data character in the beginning, and man they are totally bought in now! Love it!
I also love that they love Gates McFadden! It's really nice to see her performance appreciated.
to know hims is to love him is to know him - we LOVE Data and Brent and this episode
It's always fun when they go "I hope more is done with this idea later" or "I hope this character gets more to do in the future", and a large chunk of us watching nearly burst trying to keep ourselves from spilling the spoiler beans.
Don't worry guys you're about to get your Riker episode! It's one of my favorites in the series, I think you will love it! Thanks for your reactions!
William Morgan Sheppard has an amazing list roles he has played over the years - including as a voice actor in the computer game - Medal of Honor.
My favorite Morgan Sheppard role is old man punk rocker in Max Headroom.
Also as a memorable role in Babylon 5. Perfectly cast...
W. Morgan Sheppard made such solid and memorable appearances, particularly in sci-fi --- as has his son, the very recognizable Mark Sheppard.
@@ShamrockParticle Two. He plays the Soul Hunter in Season One, and he plays G'kar's uncle in Season 2.
@@HermanVonPetri Yep, and the two of them got to play the same character in Doctor Who Series 6.
Man the promos spoiled a lot
A "lot"? I am sooo glad that they did not showed them on Austrian TV where I first watched the show because as far as I have seen them here they actually are constantly giving you the "whole" plot twist. What on earth?!
These guys have trained me to "like" their videos like a Pavlovian dog.
One other unique thing about the Pulaski turbolift shot (and something which only happens several other times in the history of the Trek franchise) is that Pulaski doesnt telll the turbolift where she wants to go. And yet somehow it still knows where she wants to take her?! This also happened at the start of Elan of Troyius.
Don't worry, the director had told the turbolift beforehand 🙃
Or perhaps this one was an express one? I rarely see this one used, the one that comes into the bridge from that angle.
If you're ever looking for more Brent Spiner stuff to watch, he was in the short-lived scifi TV series Threshold, produced by Star Trek veteran writer/producer Brannon Braga. He plays a very different character from Data. Also has Peter Dinklage in it before he got famous on Game of Thrones, and some other people you may or may not know. Just 13 episodes. I'm not necessarily recommending you react to it in the future for this channel, but you may want to watch on your own for Brent Spiner. I liked the series, and liked the character he played, but it got canceled pretty quick.
My number 1 gripe with this episode is how casually Data tells the guy that he has an off button and where it is! If there is one thing that a sentient android would need to keep secret, THAT would be it.
But Data is like a child, emotionally, and has just been told that this is family. I was ok with it. He learns to protect himself better later.
All The Data episodes are great including Elementary My Dear Data which is more of a hologram episode but still great.
Susie Plakson, who played the Vulcan doctor will be back in a few episodes; you’re in for a treat!
I liked her better as a Vulcan, she was hot!
Dr. Selar
She also appears in Voyager and Enterprise
😮 her next character is THE hottest of the show @@goldenshark3182
She can run a diagnostic on me anytime.
The actress that plays the Vulcan is fantastic and one of my favorite actors in the whole series. She plays multiple characters/species throughout the series and they’re all great!
Oh that's right! I remember at least one more character! Can't say who, but she looked familiar and now I know why.
Agreed, she is amazing, there was nothing she couldn’t do perfectly. I felt she was undervalued, if anything she should’ve been a regular crew member.
I just realized, thanks to your editing here, that Brent Spiner and W Morgan Sheppard whistle that tune in the same key. I'd like to believe that was intentional.
A slightly flat A.
This episode, “Schizoid Man” and “Measure of a Man” are two episodes from Season 2 to remember that Picard Season 1 are built on.
Data gets fleshed out majorly in this season.
You're both in for a treat very soon, in fact you may have already seen the episode I'm thinking of. You'll know 100% if you have. Oh, and Riker is sure involved too. 😉
Also, you haven't seen Breaking Bad?
Damn.
In the deep future a decade from now when you've watched every Star Trek Episode and movie, that'd be something to watch next.
William Morgan Shepherd featured a lot in the TV Series, Max Headroom and the movie that preceded it, so it was great to see him interact with AI once again, but with Data. I knew who he was as soon as he was on screen from the Max Headroom series! A great legacy to span two shows interacting with AI! Probably another show the you all might want to review sometime. It was DECADES ahead of itself, more relatable to today with AI being a real thing instead of just an imagined concept! Limited, yes by the 80s tech of the day, but still a great show in the mid-80s, and it JUST preceded ST:TNG in run time!
I like S2 IT is still building things up. It is still being experimental. And it really has a couple highs which make the lows worth it.
6:25 They definitely needed to be more subtle with the premise for this episode to work for me. I didn't like how painfully obvious that Data was taken over from the beginning, this should've been revealed in the latter half of the episode. That scene where Ira reveals himself to his assistant in 10 foward was Gold though. Wish we got more of that Sexy Vulcan Doctor, she got like 5 lines.
I also find Ira more then creepy - I know they play up his harmless grumpy grandpa persona but as a person who was a teen girl when this aired the fact that he played grandpa to his young assistant (called her child) and as soon as he had a new body lashed out at her for not liking old men is TERRIFYING. I’ve had to live in a world where old men hid their true agenda while pretending to respect me as a young person. I know that isn’t the whole thrust of the writing of him but it is vomit inducing.
Imagine if it was a 70 year old dying woman with a 22 year old male helper she called “child”.
I know it’s also meant to be creepy in the episode but it’s also so very socially normal.
I can't wait for you to watch Independence Day again! It'll blow you away. I am so enjoying this journey with you.
This is one of those episodes that I don’t dislike; its just one that I had kind of forgotten about-Dr. Selar being about the most memorable aspect of it. (She’s not bad on the eyes.) 😊
This is among my favorite episodes of season 2. Good kind of cheesy fun and good acting. Some very good lines as well.
Great analysis of a twisty and fun episode. Your discussion about "what is life" shows how keyed into this show you both are, and that's a major reason why watching your journey through these shows is so enjoyable.
The only time Data learns to whistle!😂 Glad it wasn't Pop Goes The Weasel......
Tracy Torme also created "Sliders"... Think you all might really dig that show... Or REALLY hate it!😂👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Would have been interesting if Data at the end didn't remember anything, but shows up for helm duty with his beard but doesn't know why he has it. Would have made for a more TOS-like upbeat ending.
There's nothing remarkable about TSM, however I've never laughed harder at Brent's exhibition of comedic hubris at the eulogy. One of the "greatest minds" made it obvious to everyone he wasn't Data.
I know you already recorded the episode, but that is some good foreshadowing of what's to come.
Riker takes the TPS reports from the engineers to the bridge. He's a PEOPLE PERSON!
I was born in 88, my father and I watched a lot of late night reruns of TOS and TNG, and I think the first time I remmeber seeing this episode I was 3 or 4 maybe. Obviously it was a rerun by then, but the "to know him was to love him, and to love him was to know him" line, even as a kid stuck with me. I found "Data's " performance in this episode to be whimsical and amazing, and really it helped make him one of my favorite childhood actors.
He should have been more careful not to get caught, and the crew should have realised sooner - Troi right away surely!
I always wonder.. Do these sorts of things happen on other Star Ships? or are all ships named Enterprise just a magnet for weird situations occurring frequently. Like is there a Klingon Warship floating out there dealing with strange phenomena, like omniscient beings toying with them, or their holodecks going haywire? Do they pick up odd Aliens that then take over their ships?
That's the quiet part every Trekkie must just dismiss. Along with the insane distances and still finding literally anything else other than empty space.
The Enterprise was the flagship. The rest were just the helpers.
Steve Shrives, another Trek creator, did a wonderful piece about a school guidance counselor on a different starship. Highly recommend it. It’s all of the ships.
In addition to Independence Day, watch “Out to Sea.” It’s basically grumpy old men 3 on a cruise ship, starring both Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau, and bent spinner has a very central role on the cruise ship. Some of his funniest work! Came out a bit after Independence Day. Brent Spinner was in a few things around then. And if you dare, check out Independence Day 2 as well!
I know you guys want each character to have more to do and shine in their role. Have faith. It will happen for all of them, including Riker!
The title of this episode also comes from the Patrick McGoohan series "The Prisoner"... Another awesome series you might wanna look at and only 17 episodes to watch...💜
Everything that you have said about Data, about Commander Ryker and about Jean-Luc Picard has cemented for me that episode 9 of season 2 will be in your top five. I'm guessing now after hearing your comments that it will be either number one or number two in your top five.
I wish I could watch you watch that now but I guess I have to wait.
Independence Day? My favorite Brent Spiner appearance outside of Star Trek would be his cameo in the movie "Phenomenon" from 1996. Check it out.
I am excited for the next two weeks on this channel.
sometimes the point of "being ahead" in the story is so that you can watch the others figure out what has happened. Hitchcock created suspense like that in the second half of "Vertigo" - the "mystery" was deliberately solved for us but when would Jimmy Stewart figure it out?
Reminds me of Columbo where in the episodes the audience is shown who committed the crime and how and then get to enjoy how Columbo would figure it out.
This is a very enjoyable format, love you guys good luck and have fun : )
It starts getting really good in season 3, specifically the second half of season 3.
My husband and I enjoy this one and always watch it when it's on. The eulogy lines have become part of our common speech.
4:13 I like really liked your like take on this like episode. Thanks for your like insightful like comments.
W. Morgan Shepherd's 1st of 4 Trek appearances. He was a regular distinctive voice of Sci-fi shows including Babylon 5, Seaquest DSV, Doctor Who, Transformers..... often appearing in prosthetics.
I kept waiting for Ira/Data to throw a contraction as Ira got stronger. But that would’ve been too much of a giveaway.
Lore!
You guys need to watch the episodes of Night Court that feature Brent Spiner,, hilarious!!
Bob Wheeler from Wheeling West Virginia?
Yugoslavia, West Virginia was the first exotic local that came to their minds🤣.
@@jamesalexander5623
Don't worry about Riker, he has great episodes coming up. I won't spoil the titles, but I could name at least 10 without thinking too hard.
Riker, Worf and Data all with beards should have been in a scene together.
Other beards may be in the future.
You'll definitely see Doctor Selar again, but not necessarily as a Vulcan...😉
11:45
"Such Over-The-Top Cartoonish Acting"
That's one of the reasons that Wil Wheaton had started to hate his role as Wesley Crusher
When you hear the ALL SPOILERS episode teaser commercials it kind of takes the wind out of what decisions the writers make about informing the audience anyway.
I have nostalgia for the stupid voice over ads because I was a teen when this aired but HOLY CRAP are they dumb. We didn’t really talk about “spoilers” then (don’t know if that was even a term) but I do remember actively being mad that they “gave it all away” before it aired.
Riker has done little in Season 2 so far, but he did grow that fantastic beard, which is a much better look for his character.
"You Can't put a Consciousness into a Computer" .... Ha!
The Original Enterprise logs about Dr Corby were obviously "lost"...
Certainly that would have been held as the reveal if the writers could trust that the audience would remember that Data doesn't know how to whistle only regefenced in Encounter at Farpoint.
I think Josh and Alex are just facades - the real sentient reactors are their beards.
Beardo puppet masters? Insidious!
Funny you guys have these questions at the end of this discussion. Remember that
Spinner did an episode on leverage
Since I've done them before for a written blogger's Star Trek first-time watch (and because I just had a death in the family and could really use the distraction) I'm going to start giving a rundown of the prominent guest actors and their roles for each episode. These won't be exhaustive lists - I've done those before, and they're massive walls of text - just some of the more notable highlights. (Note to other watchers. I'm deliberately withholding any potential additional Star Trek franchise credits that they haven't gotten to yet, so as to not spoil the surprise).
W. Morgan Sheppard (Ira Graves) was a Royal Shakespeare Company-trained stage and screen actor who’s most famous for his role as Blank Reg on the cult classic 80s show Max Headroom. He also starred in Gettysburg (and its sequel) as Maj. Gen Trimble, was on eight episodes of the mid-90s scifi show SeaQuest DSV, and did a bunch of voice acting in 90s cartoons (most notably Gargoyles and Biker Mice From Mars). He died in 2019
Suzie Plakson (Dr. Selar) is probably best known now for playing Marshall’s mother Judy on How I Met Your Mother. She also had a reoccurring role on Mad About You as Dr. Joan, and was a main cast member on the now mostly forgotten CBS sitcom Love & War for three seasons. She hasn’t done as much voice work as W. Morgan Sheppard, but has done some, most notably a reoccurring role on the Jim Henson puppet sitcom Dinosaurs.
This was the first significant acting role for Barbara Alyn Woods (Kareen). She went on to play the character of Deb Scott on five seasons of One Tree Hill and the mom on three seasons of the Honey I Shrunk the Kids TV show. More recently, she plays the mayor on the Chucky TV show.
Not a whole lot more to say about this one. As the series goes on, I think you will find that Patrick Stewart and Brent Spiner manage to keep certain episodes from going entirely off the rails. You managed to come up with a number of more interesting takes that they could have done with this story and material. But Brent Spiner manages to keep it consistently interesting the whole time he is on screen.
This still ins't an episode I think to return to watching when I want to watch some TNG. But just watching a bit of it here makes me want to rewatch it again now just to fully experience again. But as I said in the other video. It feels very TOS. I guess PIcard had a good speech at the end to help determine the outcome. Won't be the last.
I think there are episodes that are in place to remind us about character quirks. This one is to remind us that Data is an Android and there are others that remind us that DiNA is a Betazoid or Worf is a Klingon. These set up for other episodes that need us to know the back stories or personality traits that they don’t have time to fill out in that specific episode.
I think part of the reason for such starkly opposing views on some episodes has greatly to do with the fact that you guys are watching it in quick chronological order with a critical eye of evaluation, vs a lot of fans having had 20 years of TOS/movies fully cementing what Star Trek was and needing more time and quality to crack the shell of just being critical. (That was me)
Riker does get better. Measure of a Man gives him more to do
you should check out Gargoyles, Deadly Games, Young Justice, The Master of Disguise, Independence Day, Superhero Movie, Geppetto if you want to do the Brent and some times other Star Trek voices gambit.
I think the whistling should have come at the end of the episode. after data was back.
Season Finales? After The Best Of Both Worlds Part 1 we had to wait 6 months while wondering if the last command was successful.
I can't remember a thing about ever watching this episode.
Either I was lucky enough to miss this episode -or- I completely repressed it from memory.
My boys with the exposition dump about serialized vs episodic😂
The bad times ended before the end of season 1. I can only think 1 horrid episode yet to come. Other than that 1, I predict you won't hate any episodes that are left. TNG is universally seen as a classic for a reason.
I feel that Dr Selar was a stand in for The now absent Doctor Crusher…. Perhaps people didnt buy Dr Ira Putting the Moves of an actress of Diana Mulder’s age …. And it was a good reintroduction to the Vulcans back into the franchise…. Without talking about what is to come, its a shame that Doctor Selar character only proceeded in B canon…. On a separate note i once witness a “one woman” play at a convention performed by quintuplets as Susi Plakson ….
Oh boy I’d love for you guys to watch the voyager episode Tuvix 😂 iykyk
They will get to it.
I have to admit that upon my first viewing of the episode (when it first aired) I found Ira Graves character off putting and don't remember liking the episode much. However, upon revisiting it I do think the actor did a great job portraying him. Brent Spiner of course gives another great performance. I do think that in season 2 Picard starts to get more to do and seems to be more involved with the episodes, giving Patrick Stewart more chances to shine. I think the scene with him and Data at the end of the show was great. All in all not a perfect episode but some fine writing and acting save it.
Season 2 is quite the roller coaster but it gives us some really fantastic episodes along with the really bad ones…. There’s very little in between
"This android who oftentimes act a little weird, is acting more weird than usual. Clearly another consciousness has been uploaded into his brain."
Yup. The only logical conclusion.
OK fine, I'll fix it: Data becomes Graves whenever he is turned off.....
If Ira turned Data off, how did he turn himself back on after the transfer?
Just wait until they get to "Tuvix"...
This episode was ok but can't wait until they watch episodes 8 and 9.
Why would Ryker be the leading man when you have Picard? Was that a thing? Picard is outstanding.
It was a thing in season 1
A Picard-Ryker sandwich!
Handsome leading man.
You have my permission to skip Unnatural Selection and Shades of Gray. The rest of the season is smooth warping.
I think Data whistling is a mistake. We never get a clear explanation why he can't whistle but I don't think it would have anything to do with his programming. More likely some physical limitation, like not having lungs.
U mention "Beverly" as your favorite character and Pulaski as ugghh. Now that the 1st 2 bad dialog shows are over Pulaski may get some good doctor moments. Now if the doctor was Bo Derek then all the young man viewers would say ' she can say it all and wear a tethescope '.!😅
Season 2 of TNG was cooked in a microwave.
Some episodes are burning hot good.
Some episodes are dreadfully cold.
It's this way through the whole season.
So league of extraordinary gentlemen with Ira/data instead of jeckle and hyde?
Did the USA trailers always give away key plot points, reveals to each episode, and oversell everything as "action-packed" to the point of cringe as they have been doing so far?
It makes me glad the we did not get those over here in the UK, we had episode outline descriptions in the TV listings which is often what a continuity announcer might read from but without ruining it.
Yes, this is how they were. I didn't like them even back then, but only now do I realize how truly God-awful those things were.
Those are the exact ones, from when TNG was new on the air.
They reveal too much. I don't remember seeing things like that on Dutch TV.
"...on Starrrrr Trek!"
Yes. Keep in mind that the series was sold in syndication, not a network channel so many people would discover it by flipping the channels by random. It took a few seasons to build a regular audience, Sheldon Cooper, notwithstanding.😊
Great Job TA crew! Make sure you like and subscribe!
