On tomahawks ax handles shovel handles etc I tend to gravitate more to the Tung oil finish Tung Oil when fully cured and dry will leave a protective finish over the wood longer lasting so you don't have to keep reapplying it but ever so often it also has UV filters in it

Hey Chris boiled linseed oil is for thinning paints if you paint on canvas...... it should never be used on wood it does no good to the wood everything's been boiled out of it what you want people is Raw Linseed oil! Raw linseed oil is what we use in woodworking I've used it on my longbows for years and I use it for many many years on My guitar fretboards anywhere I've got unfinished wood such as rosewood ebony etc there is no oily no sticky residue and it does not go rancid raw linseed oil is the stuff to use!
Good advice Chris! The only thing that I would add is that if you don't know exactly what you want your hawk to look like you can go to Google or Bing, or whatever your favorite search engine is, and simply do a search for "Cold Steel Pipe Hawk Mods" (or Rifleman's Hawk, Trail Hawk, etc...). Click on the 'images' tab, and you'll find hundreds of pictures of customized hawks. There are also more than a few videos here on YT dedicated to the subject. Some of the modified Cold Steel hawks are truly works of art!
awesome, I use the casey blue on my knives, hawks and riflles, the process is as simple as you say, for paint, I use a generic all purpose automotive paint stripper and boom, custom hawk, cheers bro
@@5gjackal336 yes if it is Raw Linseed oil boiled is when you're thinning paints people it's boiled they boil the good stuff out of it it's for thinning paints what you want to use in woodworking what we have used for decades is Raw Linseed oil you're welcome!
Raw Linseed is what you want to use Or Tung Oil when subjected to outdoor elements and heavy use tongue oil will put a longer lasting clear protective finish over tool handles and such and has UV filters in it although I'm very partial to Raw linseed oil as well I use it on my longbows and I use it on my guitar fretboards and unfinished woods but you have to know how to apply it I use a series of different grades of steel wool and finish out with quad aught steel wool as I rub in several coats all the wood will take
That was your dinner flying overhead. Man, that is a sweet looking tomahawk. Good of you to share these things. Thank you. Great idea about the tee shirts. Why did you take down the size on the handle?
i'm in the middle of customizing what you could call a hawk, i went to princess auto and bought a short handled hatchet with a hammer on the back. the cutting edge is only about 2 inches so it won't be very effective but at $15 it didn't cost much and lets me do some practice mods without fucking up on a more expensive one
I like to acid dip my bare metal tomahawk heads, then when I quench them in oil they get a really nice dark finish. Than i burn my designs into my tomahawk handle with a torch and a soldering iron. And I coat the axe head and handle with Bees wax. Then after the beeswax I coat the whole handle and the axe head in linseed oil.
Help please, I am bored with my trail hawk. The axe head has a backlash 2-3mm after few hits. would not you be so kind as to answer about correcting this trouble?
Hey Chris awesome vid as always, I customized a cold steel pipe hawk a couple weeks ago and recently the head has come loose, any suggestions on keeping it snug on the handle? Thanks
Say brother the proper first thing the proper wood to steal fit the shape in the fit must be squeaky tight snug to begin with that always works best and then fit it tighter by bumping it into position to where it bites down into the wood
You should look up nocturnal knives all there knives are hand ground and made with 3v steel. if u want a knife that u can custom order to your specs that will last longer than you will. nocturnal is the shit I own two of there knives and I would bet my life on these knives also I suggest you follow them on instagram they have all there new stuff up on there

Duh....nobody should be obsessing this much over their axe. It serves no fucking purpose or is hyper-rational bullshit that still serves no purpose. But at least this guy is teaching you something. It's hard to fault what you can learn from him, albeit this is one of the dumbest projects you could prioritize for yourself. edit: I am just fed up with collectors & basically anyone who is ocd on modifying something. I would buy one of those for sure! Especially one made from the CRKT.

I did the exact same with my Worksharp on my Rifleman's Hawk. I used a candle to burn the rings in, and I finished it with Tru Oil.

I just bought a rifleman's cold steel hawk they are awesome for the money. Good video inspired me to customize mine you do great work on the hawks.
The goose was kind of funny! Great video, thanks again.

Chris you do some seriously awesome work!!! Keep up the great work man!
Nice tip on the linseed oil, thanks!
Any Kind of sealant will make wood more brittle,Tung Oil is a better choice.
Heard tung oil mentioned recently. Going to try some.
PREPAREDMIND101 used tung oil on my AK stock. works awesome. Love your channel btw. Now when I'm looking up something I check your channel first.
@@mk45gunnr25 Is tru oil not good ?
That's sales propaganda it's no better than linseed oil. Linseed oil is the single best oil to put on your handle.

Really Enjoy your work
Thanks for posting this. Gonna try the bluing technique you showed.
Great video. I've done a couple of Hawks and as long as it works who cares. Thanks for the tutorial.
To fix the spray cans, get the "Jasco premium paint and epoxy remover" remover
That looks amazing
I basically do it the same way except the linseed oil. Will try that.

I would love to know what u are using for your handle wraps. U do it to alot your knives also..
Kool! Very good work

That video was very informative. I was curious, have you ever tried to modify a flash light? may be strip the coating and blue or polish it?
They such good fire starters that they start fires on their own!
nice video chris. doing a few more this week.
Thank you
Excellent video chris.
Thanks for the info. Especially about the stripper.
Until next time. ;)
Which hawk is the one you’re showing?they make a few!
Gloves for the Super-Blue! It is a bad chemical! But It's good for tools. I even did my SKS bolt with it. Just saying.. Precautions.
Rather than Blueing the head, I am going to put a Patina on it,? Using boiling Vinegar.
You can use mineral oil and bees wax for the handle
Hey Chris - Is this the process you used on your BK16? That thing is very sharp - well done!!
Thanks
Put one wrap of sticky hockey grip tape where the head sits before setting it in place. Dummy trick that works.
Did you make the Kydex sheath for that hawk.
good job my friend
Great video thanks
How do you attach the head back on the handle?
it slides back on
great video very concise!
I wonder what kind of damage or failure you would get if you fiberfixed the entire handle and maybe even the axehead to it. Maybe a ZGBTV2 vid idea?
good job, thx for the vid
So what would be the best way to seat the head snug with out the set screw?
Say brother the proper first thing the proper wood to steal fit the shape in the fit must be squeaky tight snug to begin with that always works best and then fit it tighter by bumping it into position to where it bites down into the wood
I feel that stripping the coating is sacrificing rust resistance and getting less chopping traction is not a good reason to strip a head off
Rust resistance is added by applying gun blue or patina. I dont have rust issues and all are stripped.
Take those cans back to lowes. Even if you don't have the receipt they will give you store credit for more goodies.
gotta love stores that stand behind what they sell
you never showed how you attach the head
Why does no one soak their handle in wood hardener?

Nice, used zombie Apocalypse Weapons 👍
I WOULD NOT KEEP THOSE LINSEED OIL RAGS.....TAKE THEM OUT AND BURN THEM RIGHT AWAY
THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!

Took me literally 5 mins with dollar store sand paper to do the handle. Lol
