The BCM-104 does sound great! But keep in mind it's well over twice the price of the Ethos... $1,195 vs $400 USD. So the fact it's even a comparison might say something about the Ethos. I'm new to the world of microphones, but wouldn't it be possible to process the sound of a good quality microphone to sound like a different microphone? e.g. could you make the Ethos sound more like a 104? or vice versa? I realise you can't go backwards i.e. you can't make a bad recording magically good, but couldn't you for example brighten up the bottom end of the Ethos to sound so close to the 104 that you couldn't tell the difference? Maybe an interesting video idea?! Cheers :)
I wish they’d sell the Icon grille like they do the Ethos wind screen. It does sound absolutely wonderful with the foam off, but I don’t like living dangerously lol
Interesting comparison for sure. Was this the Ethos with the foam and no eq? Just curious because I now use it and it's fantastic. Wipes the floor with plenty of pricier mics once you give it some love.
@The Microphone Assassin Yup I prefer the same. Foam off 90% of the time unless it's a long-form thing. Sounds killer even without working it close like any good shotgun but also has a special something on the top end.
The BCM Sounds good! 😊 .. still thinking of getting it, but I love my M930 from Gefell, the size/ and design, sound, build quality. But if the bcm will come down a bit in price again maybe..
The 104 will be a slightly more neutral tonality in the same ballpark as the m930. Those are fantastic mics so you may not need a 104. But, if you want one, used prices on 104s are pretty good.
I really want the BCM104 but I am having difficulty getting it home. I tried ordering from GC and that fell through and now I am waiting on Amazon to get it here but they are delaying. WTF is going on with the supply chain?
@@MarkYoshimotoNemcoff I got it today finally! I have had nothing but issues so far though. I had the "hum issue" until I opened the xlr jack three times and then it disappeared. Then I tried it with the 100 hz rolloff and without it. I prefer it without the rolloff but it still sounds less detailed and present than my old clips of the TLM 103. It is a little less sibilant than the TLM 103 but I am just not digging the sound as much; at least for my voice. I will try EQing it a bit and trying to find the right sound for me. I really want to like this mic.
@@mpbootcamp7009 I actually owned the BCM-104 for almost 18 months before I realized how much I love it. It was so different sounding to me when I got it that I didn't know what to do with it. The bottom end felt light and I wasn't sure if I liked the top end. So it went back into my mic closet and occasionally, I'd bring it out and try it again and just didn't connect with it, despite people telling me they really liked the recordings they heard of me on the 104. I was on the verge of selling it and then I heard Curtis' clip from this video and realized how incredible the midrange is on this mic. So, I got it out again figuring I'd give it one last chance and, Wow. I find it to be amazing now. The bottom end that I thought was too light is just right on everything and the top end I thought lacked detail has lots of detail and I barely need a de-esser with it. It's been winning auditions, making money and after all this time, I'm ready to make it my #1 mic. Client feedback on tracks cut with it has been overwhelmingly positive. One of the problems is that I found the mic didn't meet my expectations, but once I started to realize what the mic does so well, it all came into focus for me. The 103 was never designed for close vocal use. It was designed to spot mic orchestras from a distance, hence the exaggerated bass and treble curve to make up for that distance. The 104 was designed specifically for close up broadcast voice work, and essentially is the same circuit as the 103, just a different capsule and body. One thing you may have working against you is such a familiarity with the 103 sound and that hyped high and low end. Truth is, everyone's experience with a mic will be different in some way, sometimes that difference is greater than with others. Do yourself a favor. Don't try to judge the mic on the first day or even the first week you have it. Make some recordings with it and listen to them across several sources, especially on your phone, and give the process time. It's not like trying on a sweater from the Gap. Maybe the 103 is a better mic on you, but it's all about results. If the 103 wasn't getting you where you want to go, it may not be the right sound no matter how much you like it, and for me, getting my head around the difference between what I like and what works best was a big hurdle to overcome. Trust the process.
MYN, so, I did notice the difference and I know I'm unhappy with you because I think my mic collection may eventually expand now with another! I'm going to swallow my Discord disdain and join now too. See you in the nation!
@@MarkYoshimotoNemcoff I had a couple of those in the past. My issue with it was it had this weird click sound artifact that was sharp in the high end. My voice sounded great on it most of the time but that harsh tone was always there after using Audition Denoise.
@@veegee1974 Almost always on a commercial, they'll filter everything out on the VO from 90 on down, 120hz if it's more aggressive. Big bottom end sounds great in your headphones but it'll kill your VO. Everything is also moving toward a more detailed modern sound so as the music beds used have wider dynamic ranges, your VO has to sit easier in the presence area, and you have to aim for a sound that works in the mix as opposed to a sound that sounds big.

All microphone demos should be considered for entertainment purposes only and not as definitive proof of quality or performance.

Right? Why can’t they sell it as a mod direct to customers? What’s to lose?

Dude! Welcome to the after party!
TBH, the Ethos sounded a lot like my NT-1 5th Gen. I think the NT1 is unbeatable for the price but it also has a lot of bottom that is hard to tame.
So often the less expensive mics suffer from having a region that just isn’t easy to rein in. But even the TLM103 has a problematic low end.

I see ya'll like them thin sounds from the mikes. It's easier to take some of the bottom out than to add it in. It's all subjective though, I get it.
