I remember listening and watching this on MTV as a 10yr old in 2009 . Most people found it sad and depressing but I loved it I dunno why. I've been looking for this song ever since 2009 because I didnt know the right name ,so glad I found it tho .
If you think about it, it's not really that sad or depressing. Up to the point he dies, everything seems to be going really well for him (though it's perhaps a little sad that the events seem so good, makes you wonder what normal days have been like); but he seems to have a happy day. We're all going to go one day; wouldn't we prefer to go happy?
Very sad song.... Reminds me of someone I knew who died in 2014, I strangely remembered this year 2024.... He died after getting hit by a bus though after rushing around
The song works as a Memento Mori, a reminder of mortality to inspire us not to take our lives for granted. It's not his best day 'cos he won the lottery or anything epic, all the good things he describes seem ordinary, but it's those very things we take too much for granted that make life what it is. "Life is what happens when you're busy making other plans" as John Lennon sang. The purpose is to help us focus on what really matters in our lives and cherish the simple everyday things.
Dude, there are no hidden messages in this video! Everything is explicit and very clear from the first couple of seconds. The guy is dead and going through his day as it unfolded and he is appreciating what he had and what he's leaving behind him. Great song and gread video.
It was my friends 18th party last night, but he had been killed the week before. His brother and a friend sang this song and it was really emotional for us all, but this song was one of the few that really had a profound effect.
I never actually saw the video for this but now that I'm on a nostalgia kick listening to my old mp3 collection, and I figured fuck it I'll hop on youtube and find the video for this one, I realise how extra bittersweet that ending was-- Because it wasn't a sunny day, it wasn't clear weather. Just as soon as he died, his mind fabricated this gorgeous, wonderful last day of existence for him in his last seconds of consciousness, and he died happy.
This song is sooo amazing! I've been listening to it almost all day.. has anyone realised that at 0:20 the kid is playing with the cars and he repeats the car crash, and then the ambulance comes.. I LOVE THIS SONG!
Anyone else see the live version of him and a few lads in the park singin this tune? he's a great live performer as well. Great to hear him again. Beautiful tune.
My interpretation is it's kind of a farewell, like at the end of a good show the audience applauds, the entire day in the video appears to be a flashback over parts of his life, he is wearing his ruined jacket and has blood on his head throughout. It's not reality, the people are applauding to say, well done, good life, goodbye, almost applauding the end of his performance. :)
James Nesbitt plays a blinding part in this video, his expression at the end of the video when he relises he's dead makes me shudder, and brings a tear to my eye.
It's so ironic --- such an easy going tune for such a sad topic. I love it. It's bittersweet, and for some reason I just really like it. It puts things in to perspective. I love it Jack, please never stop doing what you do.
Still can’t watch this video all these years later without sobbing!!… can’t even listen to the song without filling up!… was , and always will be superb! ❤️
i heard this song and didnt understand it at first but... when you watch the video and think about the message its sending you'll fully understand. but for the people who cant quite understand it yet this songs message is to enjoy the little things that make your day happy because you never know when your end will be...
this song always makes me well up with tears, i love it! its so simple but so weirdly emotive! and the video is just as it should be, simple and telling the story. nesbitt was a good actor to have do it too, hes brilliant!
13 years ago I posted about this on Facebook and just got a reminder about it so had to come back to it, still very dramatic watching it again, if not quite as sad as it was all those years ago.
I love this song and all it's hidden meanings. Like at the beginning when the kid had a over turned car and ambulance. Also when the artist was drawing the world on the ground, notice he was standing on the tip of the world, like he's on top of the world. It's really sad :( but a brilliant song none the less.
I haven’t listened to this song in at least 10 years and I still get the words and timing perfectly. I mean I used to sing it ALL the time but that must’ve been 2010 or 11, only listened sporadically from then until about a decade ago when I forgot about it and yet I can still remember every word and the timing. I guess that shows it’s a great song, very catchy, and memorable!
'The most amazing thing in the world is that we all live as if we will still be alive tomorrow...' Best bit is when he looks at the little jam tart his kids made him for lunch. Great stuff.
This an amazing song, and an amazing video. I actually felt really sad when the guy died at the end, even tho i knew it was coming. A brilliant summer tune
Last year I finished a video I called "The Day I Died". It was actual video I was taking when my heart stopped at a surf contest. This song and video certainly hit the spot. My video is personal, but I plan to re-edit for utube soon. Thanks for the song.
This is soooo bitter-sweet it makes me smile and I can't quite articulate why because its about someone dying. But how lucky would we all be if when we die we were as happy and content with our lives. I've gotta feeling not many people get to find that out. I don't wanna sound like some corny touchy feely type person....coz I'm def not but this song is really spurring me on to make changes in my life.
i love this song, if ur in a bad mude u can listen to it... but if ur in a happy mude, u can still listen to it :D cant stop playing this song! love it!
Incredible video. It makes me shievr with exitement. This is my first encounter with Just Jack, and I'm now off to listen to more. Thank you for this fantastic song. The sort of feelgood tune we all need in todays world.
There's subtle hints through the video, like his kids playing with an ambulance, and the book he's reading is "The day i died". Also just jack is the paramedic at the end. Great song too xD
I've been waiting for this. Saw him on John Peel stage at Glasto this year when he introduced this song. Looked round to my fiance at the end and saw tears pouring down her face.
I love all the wee hidden bits in the video :D like Jack at the end, how he is on top of the world at one point and how at his lunch he finishe's the book called the day I died.
They clap at the end because theyre applauding what he has done in his life, they are resembling those who are proud of him, they resemble his peers and those who are important in his life
Just listening to the song doesn't make me sad, but watching the video makes me feel like crying like a 12 year old. But of course I don't, but I'm a big strapping man who doesn't cry. Ever. When I chop onions, I make THEM cry.
This is how I read the message that this video and perhaps the song try to portray, the man in the video was living his last day (without knowing it was his last) playing his role as a father, doing this duty, going to work, try to make a small impact by donating some money to the street artist. He was being friendly, and have positive outlook on life when he didn't get mad when he missed the bus. He lived the so called normal day as best as he could and it was one of his best days but unfortunately he had an accident and it caused his life, hence the song say 'the day I died was the best day in my life' not because he died but because he has lived as best as he could before he died. We never know when is our last day will be, so live everyday as best as you could and make everyday your best day. It is a sad day for his family but unfortunately these things happen.
The video has to be said to be well constructed, I have noticed an error but it is only small at 1:26 when the door goes from shut to open. Also his sleave being ripped isn't to say he is already dead but rather to say his death is inevitable as the song lyrics also point out. So when they are clapping it mearly keeps up the possitive effect of his day that would have been removed if you see him being killed. But overall, the video is great, and I love the song. Keep up the work Jack!
"and there's something about this city today, like all the colours conspired to overwhelm the grey" What a line :]

Listening to what ??? There is nothing to listen too 🤫🥱oh so 🤐 quiet....shhhh 🤫🤫😴
Im impressed they got James Nesbitt to star in a music vid. He's one hell of an actor. Just makes this song even more my favourite.

Just Jack's music is timeless! No matter how many times I listen to his songs, they always evoke a wave of emotions!!!
James Nesbitt is the only person who can make me cry in these sort of videos. He's amazing.
I loved the song when I was younger. I always thought it was sad, but now it’s next level. Enjoy everyday as if it was your last
Here coz of James Maddison. He mentioned in a recent interview that this is one of his favourite songs and I was keen to give it a listen.
I always cry when i hear "I guess i never saw that taxi!!" :(
This song is sooo amazing! I've been listening to it almost all day..

Anyone else see the live version of him and a few lads in the park singin this tune? he's a great live performer as well. Great to hear him again. Beautiful tune.
just goes to show how good James Nesbitt is. He pulled this vd off amazing and made it believable even without lines, class actor

Damn that’s deep.
When the guy was painting the picture it show he was on top of the world!!
