  • 2013- A year in review of the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner at KPAE Paine Field in Everett, WA USA.
    Some have asked me to do a compilation video and here it is. Half of it is new footage, and others are clips taken out of my previous videos to showcase nearly each airline that has taken delivery of a Boeing 787 Dreamliner in 2013.
    If you are new to my channel, here's what you've been missing!!!

  • @ExtremelyAverage1

    That's called a "Ram Air Turbine", or RAT, which makes for quite an odd sound from a jet...
    These are presumably from flight tests at the Boeing factory in Everett, only because it's the only way I can make sense of seeing so many landings with the RAT deployed.
    These RATs provide necessary power for hydraulics or electrical depending on what it drives, and usually If there's some sort of failure.

      I wondered why the JAL 787 had it's RAT deployed....usually that is deployed when the plane is in some trouble.

    It was cool seeing the auxiliary turbine under the second Japan Airlines Dreamliner. I wasn't aware that it could be used in powered flight. I can see it under the Norwegian aircraft too. Great footage and sound

      It`s a RAT (ram air turbine), it works like a small power generator. When there`s no power in plane basic systems can get powered by this small fan. In Everett pilots are testing it before giving plane to customer.

    I'm surprised nobody has asked why the RAT is down for most of these landings. I've searched through the very many comments below but nobody seems to have picked up on this. Interesting to see that British Airways has painted the 787 nacelles blue to match the rest of the airplane livery. I thought that the nacelles were not supposed to be painted. IIRC, it had something to do with aerodynamics.

      A ram air turbine (RAT, or/similar to air driven generators) is a small turbine that is connected to a hydraulic pump, or electric generator, installed in an aircraft and used as a power source. The RAT generates power from the airstream by ram pressure due to the speed of the aircraft.

    • @calaiscruiser
      @calaiscruiser 8 лет назад +1

      I think it had something to do with easing the load on the lithium batteries as a fire preventative.. till a proper fix was established. Again thats only a theory.. as some have the RAT deployed and others dont which may point to differences in the individual airliners configuration.

    • @bluesky8797

    Since all those RAT's are deployed, is it possible those planes are only using RAT power for their hydraulics? Not sure if there's a way to turn off power from the engines. Or maybe they did a mid air relight?

    To all of you who don't know what that little propeller is underneath is, it is to power the blender in the galley. It is connected to a shaft that runs into the plane and the blenders hook up to it. Or, you can power the dishwasher and the record players that they have installed. To save electricity, they're all mechanically powered. There, now you know. When you see them on other aircraft and someone ask what it is, you can now tell them!
