Great job! Afro Venezuelan here and our history has been muted and glossed over for too long.
Thank you! Yes, it's such a shame so much history is glossed over. I hope through this RUclips channel to make black history and culture more visible around the world. Happy belated Independence Day for the 5th!

I don't think Venezuelan Afro history has been muted, in our country, at least. I my opinion it is the black communities in the US, and other countries that have overlooked it. In fact, it is not just Venezuelans that have been "muted" in the afro community, it's all latinos. Aparently one cannot be latino and black.
OK IM SO EMOTIONAL I’ve been looking for black Venezuelan information forever and this videos is soooo potent! thank YOUUUU
I'm so glad you liked it! 🥰 thank you!

Me too...no one believes when I say I'm Venezuelan
We are mixed. We have the three races and we never hide that we had black history. ❤ we are very proud of being mixed.
I just discovered my roots! Proud to be Afro Venezolana
Represent! ✊🏽😊
Me too! Just got my DNA test results last week.
And this is why I got so upset when people call me “white passing” I’m from Venezuela and my DNA have black, white and indigenous… saying that I’m white is not accurate and is basic ignoring how I identify myself. In my beautiful country we have strong African influences even in our dance Tambor (Drums) and our food and culture, I wish people in America can understand this
As a kid and teen, it really shocked me to see a Hispanic, Italian or Greek-American with blue eyes or with blonde or red hair. It was only later that I gained knowledge after reading about their countries and talking to people. Then again, I never knew Black people lived in the UK until I saw Charles and Di's wedding as a kid. I was unfamiliar with the black populations in Latin America as well as a teen. Live and learn!
Lol your white your parents are not blacks or your grandparents
You are very beautiful and I enjoyed your comment.
This is an excellent video. I'm actually in one of the photos :) I have been traveling to Venezuela and researching Afro-Venezuelan culture for over a decade and this is a good capture of many important points. I have wanted to do videos just like this for years! I am sharing this and other videos with my students. Btw, you may have been talking fast, should be San Juan Bautista.
I think it would also be important to point out in an academic way that the ethnic hierarchy of Venezuela is completely different than the one in the US. We don't use ethnic labels to describe who we are. Yes, we can use/refer to our ethnic background, but it is not how we address/describe one another. Things like African-Venezuelan, Arab/Muslim-Venezuelan, White-Venezuelan, Asian-Venezuelan, etc. are basically nonexistent in our vocabulary. Of course, that is not to say that our ethnic differences are not present, but that we are all Venezuelans regardless what you look like, or what generation you are. I also think that the reason why you don't see as much of an ethnic divide, is because we don't use those labels. We have grown up in environments that have been, in a way, multicultural. Yes, we have a lot of second/third generations in Venezuelan, but from what I expirienced our ethinicity was never hold over our heads as something bad or something we should be ashamed of, in fact, it was something that made us more valuable. Venezuelan people are extremely generous, caring, giving, and accepting. I hope you were able to expirience that side of my country.
Also THANK YOU for giving organizations and association credits at the end it is extremely helpful in finding and connecting us 🤗💛
Aw thank you! Yes absolutely, they deserve a shout out for all the amazing work they do! ✊🏽
Actually, the majority of venezuelans have african ancestry and they will tell you so, proudly, not all of us "look" african but most of us have it in us, however when you ask venezuelans how we identify ourselves we say almost exclusively venezuelan, we rarely identify to a race, becase we are mostly mestizos, so identifying with only one race wouldn't be completely accurate...
Yup, I’m 12% black but don’t look like it at all. This is why we have so many beautiful people, we have indigenous, African and European descent. Most of us are also triracial!
Agree. My father is black and I'm like 20% black, but I don't look it. We don't refer ourselves as being Afro-Venezuelan just Venezuelan (well I was born in the US).
I agree with you 100% and the actual reason why we identify as a race it’s because unlike the US (race is a culture) doesn’t matter how you look, your culture will be your country, accent and cultural life in this case we are Venezuelans and that’s our culture, doesn’t matter if we are black, white, blue, green or brown.
Great video and series please keep them coming.
Thank you! I certainly will!
I’m adopted from Venezuela so I’m trying to learn the culture! Thank you so much
I hope you can discover your lands 🇻🇪🇻🇪
Most of the population are a mix of European -indigenous , then other percentage is tri-racial, European-Indigenous-African , and depending on the region you see more or less of any of them
Love this😍 Thank you so much🙏🏾

Greetings my West African counterpart from Zimbabwe.
Wow this comment makes me really happy, because we Venezuelans still conserve many African traditions and I really miss that because I’m living in 🇺🇸 people here don’t makes me feel welcome ☹️ they called me just white, basic ignoring how proud I am of my half black heritage
@@virginiarios9883 Good for you Sis. Do not allow anyone to diminish who you are...
I have been to Lagos Nigeria and they didn't make me feel welcomed
@@virginiarios9883So sorry for the ignorance here. I'm trying to unlearn American and embrace the descent 😅
As a Venezuelan thank you for the video. However, data in and from Venezuela is not reliable, to say that one percent of the population "identifies" as "Afro-Venezuelan" would be incorrect. We don't use that terminology. If we are talking about taking in the cultural elements from African countries, like music, religion, traditions, and arts. then every Venezuelan would be considered an "Afro-Venezuelan". If we are talking about ethnic background, I would say about 70 percent (being generous here) has African ethnic descent. We are a country that has never really used that terminology to describe one another. We are all just Venezuelans.
HOLY SH*T no one has ever said it better than me! and here you are. You explained it perfectly!

there is way more afro descendants in venezuela but most people dont want to accept it because of racism, colorism, and texturism theres a lot of black venezuelans they just dont claim it and people usually see venezuelans as white or mestizo but thats only because theres was a big european migration but there are way more afro descendants
No offense, I would like to know about the European immigrants as well. Asian too.
sweet cheers

Do you have a video on Afro Mexicans?
Hi Abraham, I do indeed! 🇲🇽 you can find it in the playlist 'Afro Americas' on my channel 😊
There are not many Venezuelans that would pass the "one drop" rule.
Excellent video. In Venezuela of course there is racism. It is a product of Colonialism. I recognize myself Afro-Venezuelan and I assure you that there is racism in Venezuela.
Thank you so much for watching and for commenting, your insight is much appreciated ✊🏽

Very informative and helpful video. My Grandmother was from Venezuela. a place called Tucupita, very close to where you showed on the map. Do you know which part of Africa the slaves brought over in the 1500's were from please? Can't wait to do a DNA test. 🤗🤗
Most slaves that were brought to Venezuela came from Benin/Togo and Nigeria
Harrison González-García 😊 oh wow!! Thanks for that. Looking forward to getting it confirmed. Thank you for getting back.

There’s basically all Afro-descendants in all pretty much most of the Western Hemisphere
im not black, but the little 23% i have is pride, because a lot my grandpa;s family were mulatto (Idk how to spell it lol) from Venezuela. when i dance and play drums, my african really calls out. The little african i have is not something i take lightly, because it is part of my family history. Afro Venezuelan culture should be represented more in Media, Bamonos todos los Venezolanos, hasta que sea blanco o negro, ayuda nuestros hermanos!
Racism does not hold back the black comunity in Venezuela, we are a deeply mixed population, pure whites or blacks are extremely rare hence we are all pretty much mixed, Venezuela is NOT a racist country, racism is rare if not completely wiped out
Chavez have racist caricature
@@marlene97280 Chavez is not even black, he’s mixed like 70% of our population, he just made a lot of his african roots to appeal to a resentment and when that didn’t work he appealed to our classes to divide us
Afro-Venezuelan in honor of Hugo Chávez as Venezuela's first self-identified Black president.. Brown people love Hugo Chavez.
Black people - dark brown/mixed races
Afro-descendant - mostly descendants of enslaved Africans brought to the Western Hemisphere during the Atlantic slave trade.

What the fuck are you talking about? Yes, racism in Venezuela is not overt, but trust and believe there is PLENTY of racism there. I'm Venezuelan born and raised and the veiled racism is everywhere.

Everybody is Venezuelan in Venezuela....we never called ppl European., asians,africans...thats not true
@@libertad5854apparently Afro-Venezuelans do since there is an entire day with that name in it. There is a big movement of Afro-Latinos reclaiming their identity because of the erasure that comes from the myth of "multiculturalism" that you just demonstrated
It’s not that we don’t identify as “Afro-Venezuelans”. In our culture, we don’t divide ourselves by race. Those forms at the Dr. office asking your race? That doesn’t exist in Venezuela. El Negro Primero, he is a patriot honored across the country and with pictures in our History books. Our freedom and independence was achieved thanks to the fight of African-Venezuelans, Natives and White people. From the foundation of our republic, we are mixed (Spanish, Black, and Native). We have classism more than racism. I am not saying that racism doesn’t exist, it’s just not as prominent and aggressive as in North America.
Yes many of the woman I dated sheesh…stunning.
"The Blackman who go first"...... interesting

@@BlitzOfTheReichAfro-Venezuelan seem to disagree w/ your take
@@Namak91 my dad is Afro-Venezuelan w/e that means.
@@BlitzOfTheReich that's nice, but irrelevant. Maybe don't dismiss the experiences of Afro-Venezuelans who have dealt with with racism and anti-blackness in Venezuela. There's an entire movement throughout Latin America in which Afro-descendants are demanding recognition because they are discriminated against and subsequently erased and silenced by myths of multicultural harmony
There are msny mulattos in Venuezuela.
