Toontrack themed live stream the first Saturday of every month: ruclips.net/user/shootieschoollive Additional Info on this video: An additional reason to keep to keep EZD3 active (with midi or not) is so you can automate knobs, buttons, and slider via CC Values. Thanks for your time and effort making these great videos. Everytime I hit a wall in EZD-3 I find a video some live stream in your channel that points me in the right direction. I'm looking forward to the next live stream.
This video is golden. Great discussion of the grid editor features and advantages. In Reaper you can freeze EZDrummer's track to audio without having to move the midi out of EZDrummer. Yes, working with regions to arrange/add/move sections is the reason to move the midi to Reaper for me. But, most of time I just leave the midi in EZDrummer and deal with the extra steps of copy and paste separately in EZD when rearranging song sections in Reaper. It is a bit of a jigsaw puzzle for me with my workflow. I write and record songs at the same time. For example, I might only have a verse, but I'll go ahead and add all the tracks of the arrangement... I call it working vertically whereas most songwriters work horizontally if you will. And, I like to work on drum fills, variations, dynamics, as my last step in the recording/arranging process. So It makes sense for me to leave the drum midi in Reaper.
Studio one allows you to change the piano roll to a drum view, create your own or load the individual drum note names , with a lot of the toontrack expansion pack kits note names available in presonus exchange from other studio one users. It also has a ‘hide unused’ feature allowing you to hide all drum pieces that have no midi notes allowing you to just work and view the kit pieces being played. I like to bounce between both daw drum view and superior’s grid editor with my work flow style.
Hey Sean, about bandmate and dragging audio and midi into it… Studio One let’s you do that seamlessly directly from a track without having to export anything. Studio One ftw!🤩
Great video Shawn. I use the EZDrummer 3 grid editor as it has so many more tweaking options than Logic. Also, you can replace MIDI far easier if a groove isn’t working so well.
I prefer the EZ Drummer editor over the Logic piano roll however at the very end you mentioned that there is an easy way to edit entire sections in Logic. That doesn’t change the fact that I’ll continue to edit in EZ Drummer but after learning more about that it will change my work flow. Thanks dude.
A very good, interesting video. I have produced and distributed nine albums in the last year. Most of them use EZDrummer and EZKeys. I use the grid editor in both EZKeys and EZDrummer. I think that the grid editor does everything I need. (I use Reaper). I like to import the finished tracks from EZ into my Reaper project. To me it is simple and effective.
Lots of helpful stuff in this one, Shawn. One “cheat” that I use (and it may be entirely ridiculous, haha) is to keep a track below any EZ tracks I have with the song sections I’m using currently. So a track with the verse, chorus, bridge, and any variations. Then copy/paste a section to the active EZ track as needed. I should mention that I do a lot of writing in Reaper so that sort of “rapid fire” arranging helps a lot because I can’t tell Bonzo to play the verse part 3 times this time. Haha. I say it may be a ridiculous solution because I might be missing a faster/easier way to do that sort of operation but it’s a quick flow for me.
On the arrangement side: The problem of (lack of) synchronisation between daw and EZ can be sidestepped if no move or copy is required in the daw's timeline. Lots of daws have something called an arranger but Cubase and Cakewalk (grab it while it's still free) have the genuine article. They allow you to create or experiment with arrangements by calling sections anywhere on the timeline, including calling the same section more than once. You can create multiple such arrangements without changing anything on your timeline. (Eg arr 1 calls the sections: v1, v2, c1, ending. arr2 is: v2, c1, v1, c1, c2, alternative fade out ending.) You can either write each arrangement out linearly to a project's timeline (which would then of course no longer be synchronised to EZ) or just render them to wav, mp3, etc without having to do that. The SWS extensions in Reaper have the region playlist which is more limited (and sometimes error prone) but does provide some of this functionality. What I've described here probably does not solve all synchronisation problems but it helps sidestep or greatly postpone most of them. Perhaps (perhaps...) the synchronisation problem could be solved more generally with ARA? Is there any talk of ARA coming to EZ Drummer?
Diversity is good. I appreciate the comment. As for Toontrack, they don't talk about anything to come until it's here. We'll see what the future brings.
@@ShootieSchool Yeah it will be interesting to see what they come up with next time round. In case there was any misunderstanding btw I wasn't dissing any daws and in particular not Reaper (which I use a lot). I just saying that the if one uses an arranger such as the ones I described you don't have to move things around the daw's timeline and therefore don't lose synchronistion with EZD3. Another great video btw, one of the best so far for me. Keep 'em coming.
Ableton 12 recently added a bunch of new midi tools like humanize, etc. Also, although I prefer the EZ workflow for a variety of reasons, I export the midi into Live after I've finished the arrangement because Live allows you to set a range on velocity, separately for each note. An amazing feature that I wish Toontrack would add.
I don’t use humanization or any of that because toon track is place holder for most things to make songs for a real drummer to finish. My guitar tracks are already loose enough. Toon track is a template for me. And a great one. These tourorials are great. I switched to logic, so 5:22 I can tell you I don’t use any of that humanization etc. I started on tascam 4 tracks to 8 tracks on cassette. I’m always gonna try to record full guitar tracks and bass tracks but I’m not above toontrack. It is literally the best drum program. Bro keep it up. I keep watching because we keep learning. Saw sublime and TSOL in the last two weeks. Brads son is amazing if they come through see them!
I use Logic. I do preliminary edits in EZD 3grid editor. When I am fairly “happy” with the entire song, I move it over to the DAW, where I can do arrangement changes. This also allows me to separate different elements and place them on their own track- like a producer drum kit. Many times I don’t need to do that. But if I want more control, its available
I’m getting into the grid editor. I love the “slope velocity up” and “slope velocity down” feature whilst keeping the natural variations. I use cubase and I don’t think that it does this. I can get some great natural sounding dynamics into the grid editor.
This is the reason I prefer to stay in EZD with my midi. Do check out the 13:10 section again. You must export it to then reimport it. Though particular DAWs could have workarounds, like Reaper on PC for example.
Well now I know why I keep making things worse. Pressing buttons to humanize, quantize, or change timing, playing with the mix(not knowing what Im doing), not understanding velocity, or upbeat, and taking something not great but workable and destroying it. This might actually helped make that less so..hopefully. As a guitar player, drums and drummers are a mystery, wrapped in a enigma, wrapped in a burrito.. Perhaps I dont take enough drugs to be a good drummer. Ill do better. Thanks, keep up the good work and excellent videos on EZdrummer
Lol! If you're using Toontrack midi I'd say for the most part, less is more. I've got a Grid Editor course coming out soon, if you're interested check back soon or sign up on my mailing list.

In Ableton Live you can export the midi loop to your desktop (or any folder) and then drag it into EZ Drummer. Been trying to nail down a good work flow for working with different Scenes in Ableton , editing midi drums and then piecing together the songs. Need to lorn more about the EZDrummer song pattern arrangement view, Ableton does not seem to allow the retitling of the notes to their instrument as was demonstrated in the video, Looks like staying inside EZDrummer is the way to go even before trying analyze what humanization tool it has. These humanization tools are critical if you get non-Toontrack loops. Few co.s take the time to sell humanized loops. So you might have a mix of Toontrack and external loops in your songs .. this would cause velocities to be all over the place.

Cubase has a great piano roll and the Logical editor to create presets and assign to shorcuts which is amazing but it´s not as cool as the features you are showing inside EZD3 I must say...
