  • Do not use stainless steel electrodes because its content in chromium. Chromium oxidize at the anode into hexavalent chromium, that is very toxic. So you should use coal or graphite electrodes (or platinum if you are rich).
Experiment passing electricity through a solution of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) in water. The water splits into it components: hydrogen and oxigen.
The electrodes are made of stainless steel and at the positive or anode will be released oxygen, while at the negative or anode, hydrogen.
We will check that it is released double amount of (voulme) of hydrogen than oxygen, because the chemical composition of water: H2O
It is an endothermic reaction, this is, it absorbs energy, in this case, electric energy.
At the end, I will perform the inverse reaction, this is, the combustion of hydrogen to combine with oxugen (oxidation of hydrogen) to give water. This is an exothermic reaction, so energy is released, in this case thermal energy or heat.
