      I would like to add that having a reviewer bluntly say that going to the larger displacement engines are really not worth it, and that it's base model is really a dream car already is very refreshing. He should have tried enough cars to know this. It's making you very comfortable with choosing according to the size of your wallet. A friend had the W124 SL 3.0 - 24 and he said that it's really the better car since the whole car is a lot lighter, and not so nose heavy, making it more accessible for "spirited" driving than the more expensive siblings. But I do question your opinion as to what is sustainable interior? Leatherette and Microfiber? Seriously? Both are made from plastics, hence oil. Leather is at least renewable resource, or do you suggest we all become vegans?

    • @nigel.w
      @nigel.w 4 года назад +1

      @@perjanuschas8050 Thomas is very passionate about having alternative options to leather, and I respect that, even though I think it's okay to choose leather, and I hate the scruffy look of Alcantara. A few years back, Thomas made a video detailing his objections to leather and showing very graphic video of how leather is produced around the world. Maybe it over-emphasized third-world production. I'm not an expert on tanning, but I know the process involves heavy-duty chemicals no matter how much the process is refined and controlled. Anyway, the video is certainly thought-provoking and worth watching, as long as you don't have a very weak stomach. I still eat meat and still love leather, so it doesn't contain powerful subliminal messages that will transform you into a veggie or vegan.

    "Outdated" is relative - you also can say, it is the last classic design with real analog clocks and analog functions - one button for one function. IMHO I love real cars and not driving smartphones!

    I have a SLK350 now that pretty much has some of the things the SL has, but I just love these cars. Right now, the SL is the ONLY car I would make me sell my SLK350 and get a newer car. No rag tops either. PERIOD. I still prefer the front end of my SLK350 over the SL front, so that will hurt giving that up.

    i think some people think that they make the sl to be just a sport car i have news for you its not Just
    if you are like me and use this car for weekends after working hard all week you would wont a relaxing car you can put the hood down ie not (soft top)
    relax in them country lanes and a car that handles bumps well not like Ftype etc relaxing all the way after 5 hours of driving leaving the car without a back ache ie Ftype,porsche etc then is the car for you i think people is thinking sl pure sports car Wrong its a all round car Luxury Comfort and speed when needed

    One of the key perspectives Thomas brings out is real world road driving. In this case the V6 does the job well. Once this car gets updated infotainment - it's going to be great.

    Technology get outdated much faster than analogues. So i would say id prefer the analogues limited functions that never get dated Nd work well untill broken. Tech stuff always breaks down. That said, the SL is my dream car and my true love goes to this car in all of my car enthusiast sense. This review showed a glimpse of how it would be when i own the car and live with it. And thats how it should be. Best car got the best review.

    I'm a big fan of cars with a concept like the SL. A comfortable (roofless) GT car with a focus on driving it yourself. Aside from that, features I like in a car aren't features most of the general public likes or finds important. Things like real dials (not those TFT/LCD screens), good steering feedback, a decent range, less wind noise at speed, not super-low-profile tyres, large side windows...
    The SL ticks a lot of these boxes, just a shame not more cars are like it. (and that it's not more affordable :) )

  • @JUAN.RAFAEL.CASTRO
    @JUAN.RAFAEL.CASTRO 7 лет назад +6

    For the people complaining about how outdated is the SL inside, is because the style it's supposed to mimic the retro look of the SL's from the 50's ! And MB never make a completely new car (SL) every 5 years, like other car makers does with their cars. If you know the history of the car, you'll know they wait to make a new car at least every 10 years ! I think the mistake MB made was making the AMG GT, that makes hard to justify having the SL !

      finally someone, who understands the sl and his position in the market and the reason why it looks like that. most persons not even have any kind of understanding and knowledge about the history and the design of sl class. they complain about the interior design, about analogue buttons and similar things. if they want to play around with huge touchscreens, using finger their beloved finger gestures, then they should go for an ipad or their crappy smart phones, pack it into their latest car models they prefer. but do not look or even buy an sl. this car is for for people with style and class, and not a finger guesture toy car. all said for now!!!

    Nice to see a reviewer not buying into the AMG craziness that some North-Americans reviewers love so much. Faster and stiffer suspension is not always better, especially on Mercedes. I don't mind AMG, but these cars are in my opinion not specifically designed to become race cars/AMG.

    Enjoyed your relaxed review. I just got an SLC43 AMG 2017 with only 12,000 miles. Really brand new condition. I'm thoroughly enjoying the ride, the power, the torque, the sound, and the grip on corners. I know you've done a review on that car. It'll be interesting to see a video from you of the SL400/450 vs SLC43 AMG, combing some footage from each review and adding an extra voiceover comparing the two. Both these models are coming up in the pre-owned market in the US, due to leases ending. I'm really curious how the SL stacks up against the SLC AMG.

    Agree with the perspective offered on this car, including re the facelift front-end, the interior and the materials options (definitely don't understand why artificial leather is not an option, as MB's offering is very good and more durable, and it would also save some money). V6 turbo engine also sounds great to my ears and seems to offer more than enough power.
    For circa 100k Euros, I think this is a very good choice. At 200k Euros for the V12, I think I'd be shopping for something quite different, even though I love the idea of a V12. Maybe the V12 becomes a much better option on the used market as time goes by, relatively speaking, but of course it's not only much more thirsty but costs more to maintain - although my understanding is that it's a pretty reliable unit. For me, the V8s really don't seem to fit the car, at least don't seem to offer enough extra to justify paying significantly more, or deliver the specialness of the V12. Of course, everyone's different and many prefer the more bassy tone of the V8s.
    As for the prospect of the next gen having a soft-top, I understand the trends, the weight saving advantages for handling and economy, but I think it would be a very disappointing move for the SL, even appreciating what SL stands for, because of the advantages of the hard-top for looks, comfort, the ability to have a pano roof, and most of all for security as well as insurance considerations. I am actually intending to buy one of these, and probably would not consider a future gen if it has a soft-top. And, as for weight, this gen already has a magnesium top, and other even lighter weight materials are available to MB, like carbon fibre and other composites, so I don't appreciate the need to make the SL follow the pack, rather than it delivering something different with more advantages than disadvantages. Anyway, MB won't go broke if it's just me who doesn't buy a base model with Airscarf and Magic Sky roof, like the review car.
    Oh, and just to say that I think the Airscarf is something that differentiates these cars and also makes them more saleable in the used market, as does the pano roof option. I think both are amongst the reasons to choose the SL. I think the customer who is attracted to the SL wants more than enough performance with comfort and understated elegance and class, whereas MB offers plenty of choice at vastly different price points if the customer wants to emphasize sportiness, greater practicality, greater performance, or even greater luxury, namely, the SLC, C/E Class convertibles, AMG GTC, and S Class convertible.
    Thanks for another very enjoyable review, Thomas. This must be the third time I've watched this particular one.

    Another honest and well detailed review from Thomas. Your conclusion that it is the perfect combination, was mine as well; just by looking at the stats on the SL. It's always better to have less weight over the front wheels in a front-engine car.
    A side question, Thomas: Why was there so much graffiti on the highway walls there? I'm a little surprised that kind of vandalism is permitted in a country like Germany.

      Sat nav screen looks too small for that target market. And even that target market wouldn't want all those redundant buttons on the centre console. Worst thing for me is the sat nav and vents being off-centre from the centre console. I think the older R230 interior is going to stand the test of time better, and it's easy to install an Android head unit if desired. Other than that, I think the R231 is an awesome car.

    Finde es übrigens sehr gut, dass Ihr nicht immer die größten Motorisierungen vorstellt! Das Netz ist voll mit dem SL 231 Mopf/Facelift von AMG. Tolles Auto, aber etwas drüber für die meisten von uns,wenn wir mal ehrlich sind. Den "Einstiegs-SL" kann man sich in 3-4 Jahen gebraucht leisten. Top fand ich auch den Beitrag über den VW Tiguan mit 125PS. Pre-face lift is a much better, much stronger look, especially for the AMG models. The too large round airscoops in the lower spoiler ruin the continuity and boldness the earlier models had and overwhelms the subtle iconic 300sl details on the hood and sides. I know because I have a pre-facelift SL63. But the auto trunk cover and updated software are better in the newer version. Forget hp, it’s all the same engine and any tune makes numbers bonkers for either version.

    Is it normal for NOX sensor to go bad on a sl350 2013 model R231 that's only done 38000 miles? Mercedes qouted me £420 that's for sensor labour not included.

    v good review as usual.
    agreed that the v6 and non-amg v8 are the choices. and the main reason to choose the v8 is not so much the extra power but the sound if one is a v8 man or woman. personally i tend towards the higher pitch f1 sound over the muscle car v8 sound, but i think this is the choice, although i can't say that i think the v6 turbo has a particularly good sound. it's not bad but not great, either. and that might make me choose the v8 after test driving both.
    the old non-turbo v6 could be tweaked to sound very good, imo, and as i also prefer the pre-facelift exterior, i think i'd be happy enough with that. nonetheless, i think the significant extra power in the new model is welcome.
    i think 400hp is about the sweet spot for a gt road car. however, i am not convinced that turbo is the way to go. might be good for lowering offcial mpg, but in the real world, i think turbos encourage you to put your foot down, and when engaged gulp fuel.
    so for me, the old 383hp n-a v8 in the facelift r230 was closer to perfection, and that would probably be where i would be putting my money, despite the old-fashioned centre-console. if that is too thirsty, then i think the pre-facelift r231 n-a v6 is more than sufficient.
    in the current facelift model, the two non-amg engines are definitely the way to go. the v6 turbo for sure has enough power, and is the head choice. but the v8 turbo is probably more in keeping with the historical dream nature of the car, and is the heart choice.
    if you can afford this car brand new, then i doubt the economy differences between the v6 and v8 are a significant factor in the buying decision, although nobody wants to waste money. as a used car purchase, as it would be for me, maybe the economy difference would be enough to have me opt for the v6, unless it was only going to be a sunday car. however, the sl could well be a daily driver and then the economy differences could quickly add up to a significant sum.

      Interesting for me to read what I wrote a year ago. When I watched this review again today, I thought the V6 turbo sounded rather good. The R230 facelift is now even better value in the used market, and pre-pre-facelift R230 SL600s are now temptingly priced too. Not sure the extra for the R231 is the way to go, but of course it's a significantly newer and more efficient car, although the interior tech is already dated and maybe not standing the test of time as well as the older R230 interior, at least 2005 on. All that said, I think the R231 is still worthy of consideration as a new car purchase, even though it must be at the end of its life and a replacment must be imminent. I also think it will be sad if the replacement has a soft top like everything else. Other options to save even more weight than the magnesium top it has now, so for me, MB reverting the SL to a soft-top would just be to save the company money and increase profits. SL should lead in this regard, not follow the pack.

    The front side does not look that well form all angles, think the re-design does not fit 100% to the car. A problem with most facelifts, most timers the original design stays better when a car is aging. The diamond pin grille in my opinion also looks not that good as it does on many other mercedesses for instance like on a GLC or E class.
    Thomes you did well again, only I missed if it comes with the 9 speed auto, it probably does. You deserve a car like this for making these excellent reviews.

    Beautiful car... I admit I was less impressed with the interior. Seems like the E-Class and the AMG GT have better interiors, not sure why.
    Interesting that the guys at Motor Trend (another channel I watch) disagree with you, Thomas. They think the SL is the inferior model to the AMG GT. They are looking mainly at the sportiness and performance however... taking them on track and so forth. They thought the performance and feeling of the AMG GT is more close to the magical 300 SL from the 1950s... it embodies that spirit more.
    Sadly, I have not driven either car. :( However, if I was able to, I have a feeling I might agree with you, since I value comfort in a GT car. I also agree that 100,000 is too much to spend for less than 1 second worth of bragging rights. :)
    I wonder if there is anybody else here who thinks the AMG GT is the superior car?
    I see a lot of the comments calling the interior 'horribly outdated' and I don't think it is that bad. Yes it is not as good as it could be, but I think people are just being too picky. The car is beautiful and yes, I would love to have one, perhaps an AMG 63 model in Thomas blue...
    Definitely keep that diamond front grill. :) Thank you for the wonderful review!

      this interior is dated because the car is already quite old

    • @aerongemini

      Hope it's okay if I post a link:
      www.edmunds.com/mercedes-benz/sl-class/2012/pictures.html?&filter=interior
      If you look at the interior from 2012, it is very different, at least to my eyes. The air vents were not the same version that you have in this car, those premiered in 2013. The computer screen, gear shift, and dashboard (including gauges) are all different. The screen has been moved up. The steering wheel was redesigned. So on and so on...
      I guess maybe I'm misunderstanding you? From my point of view, this interior is only about 3 to 4 years old. Look at the major differences in the air vents for example, they changed this in the C class as well around 2015. To me, that is not that old. I do agree about the number buttons, for the phone, of course.
      I know the SL tends to stay in its current model for usually a decade or more... but I don't know what you mean by this is an old car? You mean the SL itself is in production for many years? So what? So is the E-class (well, 1993 to present).
      I don't know... to me that is not that dated, some elements yes, but overall only 3-4 years old.

      Good question. The Mercedes SL evokes more emotion, but on the hard fact side, the S5 is the better every day car. Also accounts for the C-Class Convertible, also seen that review? Mid-Size Convertibles are more reasonable and better in every aspect if you let your heart aside

    11:45 I actually think that the above-dashboard screen is better. I first thought that they do it this way because infotainment systems improve every year so it might be handy if the company improves it, they could offer to the owners an easy way to change it. But that wouldnt deal with the software so I looked it up and found this explanation: www.topgear.com/car-news/insider/qa-why-does-mercedes-keep-building-cars-floating-screen

    • @autogefuehl
      @autogefuehl  7 лет назад

      nice article. All has pros and cons. However my info is that Mercedes is going away with those screens to the solutions we see in the E-Class

    • @damasek219
      @damasek219 7 лет назад

      ***** hmm, it might be, the article is 2 years old so many things could have changed. This was the only explanation i have found as to why they do it this way.
      I also personally think it looks better because it makes car more car because it detaches (only visually but still) the elecronics from the pure car mechanics so car looks more like a car and less like a computer. So prefer this aesthetically too.

    Great review Thomas: thanks a lot. I just love the look of this car and can easily forgive the ancient interior tech. It is the only cabriolet/convertible I would ever buy as, generally speaking, I do not like that class of car. car makers really have to sort out their model numbering/naming. its getting ridiculous now. this is a 3ltr badged as a 400. the 63amg badged mercs were 6.2ltr now theyre 4ltr. merc should rename all their amg models as ''x AMG'' so for example the e63 amg will become the E AMG. this model here should be the sl300, and if the same engine is used in a higher output then that model should be the sl350
