News of the Times Episode 331 | 1911
In today’s episode, it is 1911 North London. A wealthy spinster lodger has died in the Seddon household. She has been poorly for a few weeks. The doctor issues the death certificate and Eliza Barrow, the spinster, is buried in a cheap grave.
But, by chance, Eliza’s relatives have heard of her death and are baffled why they had not been contacted. Looking further into it, it would seem that despite Eliza’s wealth, she was buried both hurriedly and cheaply. And where has all her wealth gone?
An exhumation is ordered, and Scotland Yard is called in. This case dominated the papers for weeks. It had all the elements of a great story: a wealthy spinster, a charming man, Scotland Yard, famed defence lawyer Marshall Hall and the secretive Freemasons.
We take a look at the background, the crime, the trial and the postscript of the Scotland Yard Seddon case in today’s episode of Murderous Mondays.
    Hosted by Robin Coles.

Well, well, well. What a stinker Seddon was. He was a greedy old toot. I hope someone gave the young man a home. Thank you for sharing this intriguing story.

Thank you - glad you liked it! 🙏Yes, he was a bad 'un! Ernest had a sister, Ada, who was being kept by a remote relation, so we are sure he was reunited with her. But of course, he lost all the inheritance which was planned for him. The judge was clearly upset that the wife was not found guilty. Scotland yard wins again though!😉

BLIMEY!! That Seddon sounded like a hustler with ABSOLUTELY no morals whatsoever!! The fact that he committed murder, then buried her quickly and cheaply, says it all!! What a despicable individual!!
I do feel sorry for poor young Ernest!! I hope some kind relatives took him in!!
The fact that things needed to be explained to Eliza in a careful way implies she was somewhat vulnerable mentally?! Could she have been easily "persuaded" by Seddon?! Also, the fact that she was considered temperamental by her cousins is quite telling!!
    GREAT story, Robin and team!!👍💕👏❤💞

Yes, we think, but it was implied - not stated outright - that poor Eliza was vulnerable. It would have been helpoful to know how and where she got all the money - it must have been from relatives. Ernest had a sister, Ada, who was staying with another family member. We are confident Ernest ended back with that family member. That family member had actually moved in with Eliza to the Seddon house originally! But he then was evicted by Seddon after a week! So, like a spider, Seddon was isolating Eliza so he could take her money. Just evil. Grrrrr😠

@@newsofthetimes Seddon also may have realized that the family member he evicted probably wasn't as rich as Eliza too, so it was no point having them there!!
Yes, where DID Eliza get her money and Indian stocks from?! 🤔🤔

What a "despicable," man Seddon was to poison his wealthy border for financial gains. I believe he definitely was responsible for Ms. Barrow's heinous murder whether or not his wife was involved. I'm thrilled that he received the death penalty, I thought his wife would be acquitted. Do you know whatever happened to the young ward Ernest that Ms. Barrow was raising? Great investigation, presentation, backstory, illustrations, photos, and videos, too. Take care 🦋

Yes - we love it when Scotland yard gets his man! 🙌The judge, you can hear, was unhappy that the wife was cleared. she must have known what was going on. Yes, young ernest (who lost all of his inheritance, but at least he escaped with his life) had a sister, Ada, being raised by another - so he was most likely reunited with her. Poor eliza was a goner the moment she stepped into the Seddon house. 😔

Seddon reminds us of a spoider. Isolate the prey and then go in for the kill. Poor eliza - her life was over the moemnt she stepped into his house. 😔

So sad...... if she had only stayed bording with her family none would have came about. Also I wonder just how much the wife was involved. One thing that came out in this case was the toll that some times was taken on the judge I didn't remember hearing about that before. As always I enjoyed your video

Thank you! Really glad you liked it! Yes - you could tell from the account that the judge was unhappy about the wife being cleared of all charges. Gosh - it did not take her long to distance herself! Yes, we do not normally include the whole judge summation and judgement, but this was highly unusual. And highly dramatic! We really dislike people who prey on the vulnerable and that was exactly what Seddon did. Thank you for your kind comment and support!🙏

I'm familiar with this case and what always struck me was how Margaret walked away from it all scot-free, remarried within a year and lived happily ever after in the US. One might hope that her conscious bothered her but I doubt it. She had to have been a callous person to have taken part in that cruel deed, done for money. I hope young Ernest went on to live a good life, poor kid.
Thank you, NotT. Enjoyed. Have an excellent week ahead.

Yes, it is a fampous case - but we love this one! You can hear the disgust by the judge - striongly intiomated - of her having gotten away with it. She certaionly must have known what was going on. The lovely lad, who had his inheritance taken away form him, we are certain went with relatives. He had a younger sister, Ada, who was being taken care of. The gfamily watching her, who gave evidenc ein the trila, sounds like a jnice man. He saw what Seddon was doing with Eliza. He tried to stop it, but was thwarted. Seddon must have been rubbing his hands together with glee when he saw eliza. We particularly hate it when the vulnerable are preyed upon. Still angers us 100 + years on. have a great week youself! We have a couple of suprises planned to end the month!😉
