Fiorentino's opening story - how he was introduced to Rachmaninoff's playing by the US Navy - more particularly by Captain Harrigan of the US aircraft carrier Randolph - may be dated to within a few days in November 1946. Captain Daniel W. Harrrigan was commander of the aircraft carrier USS Randolph from September 1946 to the carrier's decommissioning in 1948. From 23 October 1946 to 21 December 1946 Captain Harrigan commanded the aircraft carrier on a GoodWill Cruise to the Mediterranean. The Randolph visited Naples in November 1946 - entering Naples Bay on 12 November and leaving on 18 November. The aircraft carrier's history (by Philip St John) echoes Fiorentino's account of the difficulties of the immediate post-war period - "Naples still showed the scars of war including many half-destroyed bombed out hulks in the harbour. The Italian people were friendly but living under difficult conditions after years of war and in a bankrupt economy".

My first intro to Sergio`s playing, (and only one up until yesterday!), was in the mid sixties when an associate at my father`s place of work gave him some records including the Concerto/ Carnaval recording - presumably music he wasn`t interested in! What a bit of unlikely luck. This interview is an absolute treasure!
@@darkgreenambulance Many thanks for your reply. I think my first intro to Fiorentino was roughly the same time as yours - his 1959 recording of the Chopin Preludes, on a small English label, Saga. This is a wonderful interview - full of good things !

how can he say such a thing "his music is not grand music"??? And then recording and playing in 4 recitals the complete Rachmaninov solo works??? A fabulous pianist that even Horowitz considered to be excellent,but this kind of statement is really annoying
@@jean-jacqueskaselorganreco6879 Wow…how nice it would have been to be present at such an event at Carnegie🤩🎹 Fiorentino and Wang are two geniuses of music and there is no doubt about this…certainly music is not measured by minutes but to be precise over SIX HOURS of extremely difficult pieces (complete by Rach for solo piano performed by Fiorentino as already said) are not quite the same thing as a couple of hours (the 4 concerts plus Paganini)🤣😳 Of course I’m joking... I repeat, they are two “freaks of the keyboard”. I had the privilege of studying with Fiorentino for a few months before he died (1990s): an excellent mind and not only about music. I never had the pleasure of listening to Wang live...hopefully soon maybe in the complete Beethoven Concertos in one evening🤣😳😎👋👋
@@remusplaten1979 you just make me laugh.Go to lusten to my concert recordings, buy my CDs, and you will know how much I have idea about music.Concerning Yuja Wang's clothing, I simply adore it, as I adore her pianism and sensitivity to music.And above all , she is a lovely human being, very funny, very normal, and maybe YOU will have the chance one day to go for dinner with her several times as well and profit a bit to enhance your musical culture
