Talcott Parsons, an American sociologist, was one of the most influential figures in the development of structural-functionalism, a theoretical perspective that seeks to understand society in terms of its institutions and their interrelated functions. One of Parsons' key contributions to sociology is the Pattern Variable Theory, which he introduced in his 1951 book, "The Social System."
Pattern variables are a set of five dichotomous choices that individuals must make when they are confronted with a social action or interaction. These choices help them navigate their roles and expectations within a social system. The five pattern variables are:
    Affectivity vs. Affective Neutrality:
This variable refers to the degree of emotional involvement in a social interaction. Affectivity is characterized by the expression of emotions and personal feelings, while affective neutrality emphasizes rationality and objective behavior.
    Self-Orientation vs. Collectivity-Orientation:
This variable deals with the focus of an individual's actions. Self-orientation is focused on personal interests and goals, while collectivity-orientation emphasizes the interests and needs of the group or society as a whole.
    Universalism vs. Particularism:
This variable concerns the criteria used for evaluating people and their actions. Universalism refers to the application of general standards and rules to everyone, regardless of their specific relationships or circumstances. Particularism, on the other hand, emphasizes the importance of personal relationships and context in determining the appropriate behavior or judgement.
    Ascription vs. Achievement:
This variable focuses on the basis for assigning status and roles in a society. Ascription refers to status and roles that are assigned based on factors such as age, gender, or family background, while achievement emphasizes the importance of an individual's skills, abilities, and accomplishments in determining their status and roles.
    Specificity vs. Diffuseness:
This variable pertains to the scope of social roles and relationships. Specificity refers to roles and relationships that are clearly defined and limited in scope, while diffuseness involves roles and relationships that are broad, encompassing multiple aspects of life, and less clearly defined.
Parsons believed that these pattern variables could be used to understand and analyze the norms and values that govern social action in any given society. By examining how individuals make choices based on these variables, sociologists can gain insight into the nature of social systems and the ways in which they maintain stability and order.

Great question! Talcott Parsons' pattern variables are a useful tool for understanding choices made in social interactions. Let's consider the variables of diffusivity vs specificity:
Specificity refers to the interaction that is highly defined and limited to specific areas of a person's role or identity. For example, when you visit a doctor, your interaction is specific to your health concerns. You discuss your medical issues, and the doctor's advice is confined to their professional role.
Diffusivity, on the other hand, refers to interactions that are more general and cover multiple aspects of a person's roles or identity. A good example would be your interaction with a family member like a parent. These interactions are not limited to a specific role but are broad and encompass various aspects of personal life, advice, support, etc.
Both of these can be relevant in exams where you need to analyze social roles and interactions in different settings, illustrating how roles can be narrowly focused or broadly applied.
