Also, anyone attempting to move from the u.s. to Canada has to remember to give away/sell any guns they may own, before trying to cross the border.
If they get caught trying to smuggle their weapons across, or get caught afterwards, they could recieve a hefty fine, and be sent back to the u.s.

I immigrated to Canada in 1970 from the United States. I have never looked back . Jn fact i couldnt have known then what a truly beneficial decision that would prove to be. I still have siblings in the US and we gather frequently. Our children are close-- more like siblings than cousins. Yet, every year it becomes increasingly obvious that something has gone terribly wrong in the US and that it affects everyone there in subtle but profound ways. If you are considering Canada then know this: the biggest cultural dufference is a commitment to the greater good, the community and a system of governing that still prioritizes " getting it right"
Think " we", not " me" and you will start to get it. The US is very close to ungovernable. Canada is far from.perfect but it still works and works well on a number fronts. Welcome to Canada but be prepared to be PART of something, not the centre of everything.

What was said about realizing Canada is a different culture is very important. I have found that Americans who have come as immigrants sometimes bring their USAmerican attitudes and almost impose them on people, assuming we agree. Canadians will not necessarily argue with them, but still are resentful of how "pushy" they might be. I think that some people who leave US because they dislike the politics or life there, feel they can build the kind of place here that they want. Please realize we have our own ways, and don't want to be a 'perfect' mini USA. 😊

Canadian here! I love my country and I think immigrants are a treasure to our society and that 99% of those who get to immigrate here are a wonderful addition to Canada.
That being said, anyone who wants to immigrate here has to remember that it is a PRIVILEGE TO LIVE IN CANADA and not your God given right. We are peaceful and caring society, we have many social advantages (including - but not limited to universal health care), we are generally very open minded and welcoming and, WE WANT TO REMAIN THAT WAY. We are not the 53rd state, we're a different country. You are not moving here, you are immigrating here. Ultimately, the process is hard and long and complicated and intricate for our, the Canadian People's sake. There is no reason why Americans should expect to be fast tracked. Being American does not guarantee the Canadian people that you will be a positive addition to our society. And quite frankly, if you are an American that does take offence to our way of doing things before you've even gotten here, you are exactly the type of immigrant that we don't want.
Deputy Prime Minister Freeland put it best, my fellow Canadians and I have a right to expect that our government has some control over who gets to come here and who does not.

Americans need an attitude adjustment before moving to Canada. We are different . I worked at a very busy restaurant that was 2 blocks from the east gate of the EXPO 86 site in Vancouver, British Columbia. Most ( not all) Americans were loud, rude, pushy and really lousy tippers. When you are in a different country than your own, you should acclimate yourselves to the area you are in and abide by the norms of that country. Generally speaking, Americans are not well liked in many countries because of their rudeness and pushiness. My SIL & BIL went hitch hiking through Europe way back in the day when that was popular for young people. They stayed in hostels and often met people who had Canadas flags sewn on their backbacks. When my SIL asked where they were from in Canada, they admitted they were from the States but were treated much better when foreigners thought they were Canadian. STOP DOING THAT!! If you're that embarrassed about being American maybe you should work on changing the attitudes of your fellow countrymen.

Otherwise forget coming to Canada because we have no housing for anyone to come here to live. Also don't be trying to go the student visa route unless you are legitimately going to be a student. Thanks for the constructive conversation. Canadian here. Canadian and American work cultures and social cultures are different. Approaches to religion are different too. I'm an IT professional in Toronto. Everybody of every religion lives and works here. It has never occurred to me to quiz someone on their religious beliefs. I've worked on contract in the US in the past. Unlike Canadians, Americans tend to lead with religious beliefs. It was the first time anyone in the workplace started a business conversation by telling me their religious beliefs and asking me about mine. This happened several times in different states. It was the first time that a client expected me to attend their evening bible study class as part of the work engagement. I declined. Client reconciled but puzzled. On the flip side, an American contractor that I was working with in Toronto got VERY upset that she could not find a church that practiced her religion her way. Religious services don't come with full on staged musical productions here. She did not renew her contract and gave this as the reason. Unless you work for a religious organization, expect business cultures to be secular.
Before you think that I am here to bash Americans, I am not. Another American contractor here for 3 months started with the arrogance that the American way was the only way to live on several topics. When he left, he said "I get it now. Canadians have a healthcare system. Americans have a health insurance system. American view each other as replaceable in the workplace. Canadian employers want healthier employees in the workplace. Canadians want other Canadians to be healthier too. It works." It takes time, exposure and an open mind to appreciate the differences.

I was shocked. What do you say to an intrusive question like that, particularly if you're atheist and living in a bible belt region of Alberta? I decided to be polite since we were in someone else's home and said, "I don't go to church."
She got a confused, unhappy look on her face and said, "That's okay... I guess."
The first thing that popped into my mind that I didn't say (because of being a guest in someone's home) was "Thank you for your GRACIOUS PERMISSION to be atheist!"
I don't need anyone's permission to be atheist. She and I did eventually become friends, but holy crap, the day I came out to her as atheist (I honestly thought she'd have figured it out by that point), she immediately said, "NO. You're PAGAN."
I said, "No, I'm not pagan. I'm atheist. They are two different things." She just couldn't wrap her head around the idea that there are some people who don't worship anything - no deities, no saints, no spirits, or anything else.
Well, the friendship gradually fizzled, and one day she claimed that she was polite to me because her religion told her she was supposed to be. I don't need friends like that, who are only considerate if their bible and preacher person says so.

I have no problem with Arabs or Indians themselves. Both my neighbors are Indians and I would trade them for any other neighbor. But they join us in our culture and share a bit of theirs here or there. They also agree that Canada is taking in too many immigrants who don't share our culture. Our dayhome caretaker is Indian, our kids all became friends and so did we, and they started conversations with us how it's embarrassing for them that so many of their people came to our country and aren't respecting our culture and are trying to change it. Of course there is good and bad in all cultures so it's not just "Americans, Canadians or Mexicans" it is the whole world. Mexican's will take "ANY" job where americans will not. Like Canadian kids now a days, if I can't get the high paying job with the best benefits then, I'm not taking this job. The Age where I come from it wasn't about Money it was about Oh, I've got a job!!! Yeah!!! How much am I getting paid... $4.50/hr. Now a days... I need it for my drugs cause I'm so depressed with the world I want $30.00/hr or I am not taking this job... You know what I'd say... Bye, I'll be sure to let the other employers know that. I don’t see that. At all. Some Americans are great. And Some Mexicans are great. Most people are very nice. But honestly, I’d be more instinctually suspicious of an American than a Mexican. Americans often seem to have a mean streak. They seem to hate a lot of people, including blacks and especially Mexicans, (and they love guns and violence!)
I don’t see Mexicans returning that hatred. Even after the trumpets have called them all kinds of terrible things.
Of course Mexico has issues with drug cartels but a regular Mexican is usually friendly and hard working, whereas an American will tell you how YOU should do the job and argue with you when you explain why it you don’t want it done that way.

I am Canadian and my wife is American. We have been happily married for 32 years, and 28 years ago she became a Canadian Permanent Resident. Folks from other countries don't just get to come and stay in Canada by marrying a Canadian. The process to get a Permanent Resident card for my wife was long and arduous, but I understand why. My wife is finally taking the big step to obtain Canadian Citizenship. She truly loves Canada as much as she loves her American homeland. But the privilege of living here did not get automatically granted because I am Canadian. I think very highly of American culture and ways, and know their customs and immigration policies are as tricky to navigate as ours. All in all we are in this crazy world together and I love and respect our partners to the South. North America as a whole is truly a wonderful place to be.

Heck, I was in North Dakota recently and a lady didnt even know where Canada was let alone Winnipeg Manitoba. But somewhere in the american mindset, they think we are their little cousin. They always mention the British and the Americans as allies despite Canada's brave acts of saving 6 American hostages during the Iranian crises or the 6000+ people who landed and were taken care of in Gander during 9/11 (and the list goes on)... They dont take the time and make the vested interest to find the truth about the cultural differences and a result feel that Canada does everything the amercian way. Fishing off the east coast is what brought the Norse peoples to North America long before any Spanish or Portuguese even thought of moving this way. Next came the fur trade that was used as a source of material for clothing. The furs were used to keep people warm and safe from the harsh environments found in Europe at that time. So in response to your statement, no they never came this way to escape their own countries but to help their countries to prosper.

What was said about Canada being a different culture is so true. We may not vocalize and have an argument with an American who has decided to go on a rant… But we resent that! A lot of us Canadians think of America as the obnoxious older sibling who lives in Mom‘s basement. And only thinks of themself. It is true a lot of Canadians look at our southern border, The way Americans look at your southern border. But we are also an extremely welcoming country.
we do have a few bad eggs, but we are mainly a society that, from a very young age is raised with the respect of you fellow people. We are a country of please and thank you.
It is very very hard to get into Canada. And marriage isn’t going to do it… I actually have four people in my immediate life who ended up with American spouses. And all four of them ended up staying in the US rather than moving to Canada because it was easier to immigrate to the US than the US spouse to immigrate to Canada.
We have an amazingly large country that we only inhabit maybe 30% of. We do have gun ownership here… But it is very regulated… There are background checks. You can’t walk into a store and just buy one. We do have a problem with illegal guns coming across the unguarded border.
Although we will just smile and look at you, keep in mind that some of your American rhetoric is actually irritating us. I would be concerned about a massive influx of Americans in this country creating a culture much like the US on this side of the border. and that would not be good.
But we don’t have a birth rate large enough to sustain an aging population, and we actually need immigration for our workforce. And a lot of Canadians are very welcoming. Ontario would be a hard province to get into because of the size of its population. The East Coast is absolutely stunning, and that’s where Cape Breton is lol they need humans there… And the middle part of Canada, west of Ontario would also need humans.
If you are seriously wanting to come into Canada, I say come on in, but if you are just being a stereotypical entitled American, who wants what they want, when they want it because you’re unhappy with something… This is not the right choice for you.
But after this long statement. I do have to say that my heart hurts for what transpired in the US a week and a half ago. I am saddened at how many human rights will be stepped on. And I feel as your neighbour to the north, if we can help , I think we should. Just maybe leave a lot of the US. “Karens” on that side of the border! because I just don’t know if we can tolerate it on the side.

That has lead to a substantial increase in the cost of buying a house or renting an apartment that there are Canadians working full time jobs that are living out of their cars. This has become a huge issue in the USA as well. The rich get richer and the poorer just get screwed. The truth of what I've said above upsets me. Immigration is changing in Canada. Just last week they made major changes to their Visa system for visitors. IT use to be that, as long as basic requirements were met, visitors would qualify automatically for a Visa term, up to the valid date for their passport (maximum 10 years), with Multi-Entry allowance.
That just changed. The gov't website has now been updated, stating that visitors will no longer 'auto' qualify for Maximum length, with Multi-Entry status.... each now will be looked at on a case by case basis, base on he reason the person is coming to Canada. Term limit will be set based on your reasons coming here, and will be determined by the person interviewing you. It is very likely, now after he changes, that instead of getting a 10 year, multi-entry, Visa... you may now only see a 1 year, single-entry' being given out.
We have been very accepting of immigration in the last few decades, but we are slowing down the borders with the recent years seeing a massive surge into the country. Expect that 'your' experience, going forward, may be more difficult than people who immigrated here previously.
On the specific topic of Americans coming here because of the election... on a personal level unless you are fleeing an active warzone, or massive oppression that violates humanitarian laws, then 'I don't want to live here any more' is, unfortunately, not a good enough reason for coming to Canada. On a personal note - why would I, a Canadian citizen, want a flood of people from the US, who weren't willing to stay and try and fix their own country? You have other reasons for coming here? Great let's hear them! If it's just because you don't like how the election went...? Not good enough for me.

I've been wanting to immigrate to Canada for years. I've been there for work and then came back to visit as a tourist. I absolutely love Canada. I brought a friend with me on a trip to Toronto and was embarrassed by her actions. The epitome of the ugly American. She was mad that when she ordered tea, she was brought hot tea. Our poor waitress tried to be as accomodating as possible by bringing a glass of ice, my friend was rude and didn't leave her a tip. She's from Texas and even though she claimed to have travelled to Japan and lived there as a child, she doesn't know any Japanese. When we went to a Japanese restaurant, our waitress was struggling to speak English and yet my friend could not speak Japanese to her. She also was annoyed that there is a different currency.
The whole part of traveling to other countries is embracing the cultural differences and not expecting everything to be like it is back home. I've travelled to a lot of different countries and enjoy the differences. Hopefully I'll be able to immigrate there soon. Getting my ducks in a row.

As a Canadian, here’s the real deal if you’re thinking about moving here: the cost of living is super high. Housing? It’s through the roof, whether you’re renting or buying. Even with good-paying jobs, many of us have to work 2-3 jobs just to make ends meet, and we have a big homelessness problem because of it. Finding a job isn't easy either - there’s a lot of competition, partly due to existing immigration issues.
On top of that, we have multiple taxes. The GST (Goods and Services Tax) is 5%, but in some provinces, it's combined with a provincial tax into the Harmonized Sales Tax (HST), which can reach up to 15%. Income taxes are also high, with federal and provincial deductions leaving many people with just 50-60% of their earnings. Then, there are payroll taxes for things like the Canada Pension Plan (CPP) and Employment Insurance (EI), which further reduce take-home pay. Depending on their income level and spending habits. And let’s not forget the new carbon tax, which increases costs on fossil fuels, impacting everything from heating to transportation.
When you add it all up, it feels like the government doesn’t fully grasp how much everyday Canadians are struggling. So, if you’re planning to move here, be prepared and do your research!

    a) Canada currently does not have the housing for more people ( we have a serious housing shortage) IF, you can find a place to rent expect to pay between $2500.00 and $3500.00 hundred a Month in rent for a 1 bedroom place and they are not necessarily a nice place or in a nice area. Mortgages are even higher. Speaking of which you will be required to have enough funds to live for 3 to 4 years without working ( it can take this long to gain such permits) so that's $42,000.00 needed just for rents per a year and you will need double that for other expenses. However, just to be kind, I will round down to $80,000.00 per a year times 3 years. = $240,000.00 cash on hand. b) You will not be allowed any firearms ( we don't have a second amendment) so you best sell em off down in the USA before you come. c) Canada does not have free health care like many Americans think as such you will have to pay for that and it could cost $400.00 per a month. Canada does not have food stamp programs or any equivient! D) Personal opinion" America is not a war-torn Country and as such a so-called refugee status is hogwash! E) Canada has been forced to take in many refugees from the UKraine/ syria/ etc etc... Our immigration system is overwhelmed and maybe Americans wishing to move should try Mexica instead

For C, healthcare is largely paid through taxes. Things like emergency care, or childbirth are free* as opposed to the US. I'm less knowledgeable about welfare, but many cities have food banks or the like. (Though unfortunately, a low income family will likely struggle to move here in the first place.)

      A) You're assuming everyone lives in, or wants to live in, one of the 3 largest cities.Yeah rents are high everywhere but they're $1,000 less, on ave., in the city I live in and I know they're cheaper in most/all rural areas. Not arguing that they're not too high though 'cuz they definitely are.
      C) Canada does not have a single national health insurance plan. Each of the 13 provinces and territories have their own health insurance plans and in some provinces, in fact in the majority, there is no monthly charge for Universal healthcare though there are likely to be additional charges for things outside of normal doctor or hospital treatments, like using an ambulance, prescriptions, dental work, physiotherapists, etc.
      D) Refugee doesn't, according to the Canadian definition when it comes to immigration mean, "war-torn". Someone who's gay, for example, and living in a country where it's illegal to be gay and/or they risk death if found to be gay would definitely qualify as a refugee.

There's a lot of different programs you can get into. For exemple, It's easier to get into the Maritime provinces atm because they have a huge labor shortage. Having any level of french will help, but is essential if you want to immigrate to quebec.
Trump policies against marginalized groups are scary and hetero, white people dont see that I feel otherwise they wouldnt have voted the way they did. As mentionned, Americans are very individualistic and it shows when they vote. They dont support each others, they support themselves. If it dosnt affect them personally, it's not a problem.
I feel for and I am glad that second person made it here.
Queer american are not refugee status atm but it's talked about. It's not extreme if you look at the number of queer people murders in the USA.
The canadian culture is different. Learn it. If you want american culture, move to Alberta.

What he's saying isn't unusual. I have what is considered a high skillset (Tech) and I had to get a job in the US first, the company then hired an immigration lawyer, the lawyer had to prepare all of the paperwork to prove that I'm the best candidate according to their established criteria. The lawyer couriered me all of the documentation when I had to go to the border to see if they would give me the work visa or not. Just a note - they can deny you a visa at the border. Just because you have all of the paperwork doesn't mean anything. Finally, I was approved and moved from Toronto to NYC for 5 years. Moved back to Canada in Sept 2022. Alot of people think you can just move to Canada or the US and you can't. Alot of people don't do research but then are surprised that they just can't waltz on in to another country. For both Canada and the US - you need a reason to be there.

As a Canadian I 100% would welcome any respectful and level minded American! I would appreciate if they learned our culture and tried not to change it. Being rude will put a bad image on you very very quickly around here. The only issue I have with the immigration is that we lack the housing to hold much more than we have. As a young person trying to get enough money to leave my house it has been insanely hard, everywhere is hiring but are very picky on who they hire. It’s hard for young people to get jobs without the experience. Rent has sky rocketed and the price of food has just become crazy. I do live in a more remote area and I believe I live in the province with some of the worst housing prices(I could be wrong). I have many American friends and I do wish the best for all Americans! If you do move to Canada just please be polite and mindful, and welcome and I hope you guys enjoy it here!

As someone in oft forgotten Manitoba (for lefties in the crowd looking for a friendly environment, we're the slightly left leaning prairie province, where leaning into racism and transphobia was probably the final nail in the coffin for our Cons during the last provincial election, which produced a leftist majority government), I just shake my head every time I see comments about million dollar houses. Those are still generally *luxury* homes here. Some Atlantic provinces have similar options, and there are skilled workers needed in some of these places, especially in areas like healthcare.

I, like many other Canadians, opened our doors and hearts to those Americans who wanted to find sanctuary in Canada. Most of these young men were younger than me and barely older than my younger brother. They came with a knap sack and a sleeping bag and little else and with no destination in mind. They would stay for a night or two or just a meal (there was always a pot of stew or soup on the stove). Although there are huge amount of newcomers who are respectful and learn rules and regulations, there are also others who bring along dangers like drugs, violence, weapons, anger, trafficking etc. Where we once were safe walking down the streets in our neighborhoods, we are now having to question everything and everyone. A lot of us are not discriminative, but it's getting harder to not categorize people who bring guns, violence and other crap over to us. Too many shootings due to someone hating someone, or over drugs etc. We are also finding that some of the newcoming drivers could care less about rules and people. It's cold as hell here in the winter and hot as hell in the summer, we are taxed to death and sh*t's expensive, "average" home prices are very hard to find, we are dealing with our own overpopulation issues from groups overseas that are not causing termoil with "other" groups from overseas (with riots in the cities) , Gas is about $7/Gallon Canadian, Carbon tax, most harsh gun laws in the world (only criminals can buy illegal handguns, anyone with a license cannot purchase a legal one.. that's not even a joke), catch and release programs even on the hardest of criminals, cell phone plans are stupid expensive with crappy coverage, you pay out the a$$ for anything service related, no family doctors available and public health care is a joke.
But hey.... the beer is GREAT!.... I still want to remain here, but we have a lot of problems that the world doesn't really see unless you are here.

Speaking from experience: The hardest demographic to get into Canada is for young, white, single males. It took almost 5 years to get Permanent Residence for the young man my daughter was dating. They are now married, he is working, but for 3 yeaars I had to pay for everything to support him. Also the applications cost me over $5K by the time he was accepted. We had to apply under "Humanitarian and Compassionate" grounds. Was a long and convoluted process. I am an American living here because my parents immigrated here in 1967, but my father had a professional government job when he applied. It took him a year to get the family accepted. The guy at 11:00 is mistaken. When my daughters partner arrived they only let him stay for 1 week. There is a lot of mis-information in the testimonials that you are showing.

We are in the same boat. My husband is Not from Canada and white. December 2024 will be 5 years here. Got his work permit last year. The government said that if he wasn't a refugee, he will have to wait while the Canadian government tended to refugees in other countries ( after taking our money for his permanent residency and work permit). This system is broken. Without work permit ( no health care). When the permit expires, you must pay again and then go reinstate the social security number, health card, driver's licence.... its all a money grab for legal immigration. They even insisted on a medical for his daughter, who was NOT immigrating.

Almost 5 years is not uncommon for legally immigrating to Canada... The average time to legally immigrate to Canada is 3 years, and while you can fast track if you have a Canadian family member to sponsor you. Even that can still take 6-9 months.
People immigrating to escape Trump should have started 2 years ago. If you are just starting now... You probably won't get citizenship until like 80% of his term is finished.

To any Americans looking to move to Canada, please consider the following: Canada is currently going through a housing crisis, and it’s estimated that we are 4.4 million houses short of fixing said crisis. We also already have an immigration crisis. Back in 2020 we allowed around 225k people into our country and since then it has rapidly increased to an estimated 571k people in 2024 alone. Since 2020 the number has just gotten higher and higher and we simply do not have anywhere to put them. Due to our current governments spending, inflation is insanely high, and we have some of the highest taxes in the developed world. I kid you not, there was a garage in Toronto that was listed for 1 million dollars. Just a garage, not an actual house. For 1 million dollars. We also have around 2 million people (out of around 40 million people) are currently living off of food donated from homeless shelters. So if you want to pay high taxes, struggle to find housing, struggle to feed yourself, and struggle to pay for literally anything, move to Canada.

I’m Canadian and did a working holiday in Japan. My visa was limited to six months and within one or two months the of expiry you can apply for another six months. Just for the six months, I had to show them my proof of funds, I had to have at least $3000 CAD. I can imagine if you want to move to a country permanently you would need to have more. Also, job hunting here is a nightmare right now. I’ve been back in the country for six months the and have applied for thousands of jobs and finally got a job this week that is only part time and minimum wage. We had an increase of immigration and don’t have enough housing so everything is expensive. Plus there are corporations that buy up tons of houses and hold onto them as investments making houses even more expensive. We also have had an increase of right wing views and a political party that reflects that. We are not perfect by a long shot

Not every part of Canada is overcrowded at present. Frankly, if I didn't have my entire family within a 90 minute drive of where I live, I'd be amiable to picking up and moving to some other part of the country not experiencing these troubles (the rent would be cheaper, that's for sure). An incoming immigrant who as-yet has no local ties here wouldn't have that issue, and could go somewhere there's space to be comfortable (just follow the cheap rents).

If you like to play with or carry guns, think again. No carry permits here except if you are a member of a gun club, and then it only allows you to carry them in cases to the gun range on the nights they are open. Then to bring guns into Canada is a whole different matter. Background checks, Courses in both gun and hunter safety. Then more permits to bring them across the border. Then they have limits on how many rounds a gun can have in it's magazine and they need to be permanently fixed by a professional. Certain types of firearms are not allowed to be possessed by anyone in Canada. You need a Psych evaluation, your spouse has to sign of on your owning a weapon, and you can be refused to own for any number of reasons. Even the number of fire arms you own can be enough to be refused. Then there are a whole other raft of paper work to fill out to live here. Classes to become a Citizen, and they only allow so many people per year. They will accept professionals over others. Doctors, nurses are given top priority. It's not just a matter of showing up and saying I'm here to stay! Until you are given status you need health care coverage from the US to cover you until approved. The list goes on!

One aspect of even just visiting Canada is sometimes missed - Our attitude to guns is very different here. Sometimes US citizens miss the bit about their right to bear arms ending at the border. Johnny Cash said Leave your guns at home Bill - Don't take your guns to - Canada. We have different laws so you might want to read up on what is different, to be sure you are willing to comply before you even start your car. You may be quite welcome, but chances are your firearms won't be..

Our current federal government's attitude towards guns is very typical of the anti-gun crowd. Lots of Canadians own guns. They are tools.
As for bringing firearms across the border, there is a process for it. However, the people saying they are moving to Canada because Trump won are likely to be anti-gun folks, anyhow, so it wouldn't be an issue.
