  • On February 28 of 2005, the May Company would see that exact fate when they would be acquired by Federated Department Stores inc, who would swiftly rebrand all their stores to Macy’s department stores. The May Co was founded in the latter 1800’s during the Colorado gold rush. Over the century that followed they would see massive prosperity and quick growth due to their eye-catching product lineups and marketing. However by 2006 the once thriving company would no longer exist, losing all but one of their many subsidiaries. So what happened to May Co? That’s what we’ll be diving into on tonight’s episode of the story of.

The problem management fails to recognize when orchestrating a takeover and rebrand, is that they decimate the identity of the business. Macy’s is a New York company. In Los Angeles, everyone knew and loved Bullocks, Bullocks Wilshire, I. Magnin and The Broadway. They had an identity. A point of view. When Federated swept in and replaced those brands, the emotional attachment was gone. The identity was gone. The independence was gone. But also, by moving all corporate decisions to a far flung location, management misses the winds of change. They cant react as quickly to changes. At least Carter Hawley Hale allowed their stores independence. Macys was overly focused on saturating the market with their name. No one really needs ten Macys stores within 20 miles of them and this is exactly what happened in SoCal. Yes malls would still have declined because of online shopping, but at least Macys wouldn’t have been so over exposed in most markets.

Did There Use To Be A May Company At Montclair Plaza In SoCal When It Opened In 1968 But Became Robinsons-May In 1993 And The Macy's We See Today?

The decline of both May Co. and Bullocks started in the late 1960s, IMO. No longer was there a elevator operator in the 70s. People were becoming more mobile and the suburbs were expanding. The big box retailers were largely in the suburbs and the Cold War was booming.

I was born and raised in Los Angeles. We never referred to May Company as MayCo. Never. I will also say that they ruined JW Robinson’s after they merged with it. Robinson’s was a little more upmarket than May Company. While May Company may have been upmarket at one point, but their constant sales eventually made them seem more downmarket.

Although at times May Company abbreviated “Company,” I never heard it called MayCo. Grates on the ears.
It also mentions it opened 10 Dillard Stores Dash to my knowledge may never owned any Dillard Stores; did they acquire some select doors?

I don't think they did. Dillards was Higbee's

I never understood WHY the FTC allowed Federated/Macys to take over May Company. Macys is a true junk store, far inferior to May Company. Hope Macys goes under and that arrogant jerk who orchestrated the take over Terry Lundgren loses every penny he has.
