Lecce is the pearl of the Salento, the peninsula that forms the imaginary heel of the Italian boot. The Baroque-Rococo style is so characteristic of this city of a hundred thousand that it is even referred to as "Lecce Baroque". Lecce, however, also boasts monuments of much older date, such as the Roman amphitheatre from the 1st-2nd centuries and the Roman theatre, which still hosts cultural events. Because of its enormous cultural potential, the city is also sometimes called 'Baroque Florence' or 'Florence of the South'.
The city of Lecce is dominated by majestic patrician palaces, town houses and cathedrals, built of soft, golden-coloured Salento limestone. It is also sometimes called the "stone of Lecce", pietra leccese. The limestone is soft, which is why it is easy to carve all kinds of ornaments into it, which decorate the local architecture on a large scale.
