Yes, his brutal changes of direction with the left foot are often more efficient than his actual step over. Also, it's just a compilation where you don't see the many times where he lost the ball because the defender went left at the same time as him. Even on this video, you can see he was in trouble when the defender didn't bite on it, he just sprint left and force a shot, and everybody thinks the step over made the difference.
Occassionally he would go right, as in some of his famous goals where he would veer towards the center rather than the flank of the penalty box. This has always been my recommended approach because you open up the angle to the goal rather than closing it + more ability for collaboration. Even if the ball lands more near the goofy foot. Anyway and other times he would just run straight through you, in between 2 defenders, or give a panna. The man was a storm. I'm realizing sometimes soccer players we learn the stepover, but it's not just the stepovers or the amount, it's the pace and what you're able to do in-between the stepovers. The feints, the pseudo-taps, the rolls to maintain speed, Ronaldo mastered it like noone else.
No its about the angle 📐 and its a coincidence the clips you see are posed such that hes to the left of the goal post. He could go right if he wanted to. As long as he sees an opening. You are right. I think he invented to face THE BEST DEFENDERS of Italy. He needed to be more effective rather than beautiful to play against Maldini, Nesta, Cannavaro and so on....
Aung Ye Tun exactly the same with Maradona at Napoli he said he had to do everything faster because the defenders were simply too good and would always be there and they most of the time would actually foul him.
He started to do more stepovers at Madrid because he lost his speed. So instead of bulldozing the defenders like in his early days, he relied more on wrong footing the defenders.
He mostly goes left because defenders would prefer to push him to dummy the ball to the left side where his left foot is weaker than his right foot. So defenders were ready to commit to intercept a right sided Puah from a stepover. However this is not a problem for Ronaldo who could score from the angle from a right side or drive in with the left side. In most cases Ronaldo was more than happy to drive left further to provide and assist into the penalty box for an incoming forward or attacking midfielder to connect with his pass or cross
Not really. He goes left because he's right footed. When you dribble with your right it's much more natural to do the first step over with your right and then go left or straight with your left foot. To go right you need to do a second step over with your left, which he sometimes did, but he seemed to like more the single step over. Check also Ronaldinho's step over, it's the same thing just not as smooth as this magician (but still excellent, both were explosive with their first step which is key for this to work well)
CR7 would do 10 stepovers against a player and still be in the same position and look like a giraffe with fast feet. I can guarantee you about 99% of his goals had no stepovers. R9 would do 1 stepover get past 1 defender, do another stepover get past another defender, do 3 stepovers to get past 1 defender and a keeper. What I'm saying r9 did stepover for a purpose, cr7 looked stupid imo and uneccasarry and irratic.
Thats.the site off a delusional man who has never seen Ronaldo play watch the video on legusus channel u will be caught looking goofy it's called Ronaldo's step over are better than r9's
@@claudecarlyle9284 first off ur just down right bluffing right now and if u do step overs on the wing the job is to push the ball forward so u can create space for a cross or a inverted run, for a cut back, Ronaldo was only intercepted once in a while stop lying.
@@idontcarethatyoudonthaveam1262 Ronaldo lost the ball relatively often, that's what I mean by intercepted. Stepovers are generally inefficient - especially with CR's habit of overextending the knee and taking too long to beat one man (a clever defender won't mind being humiliated if he's bought enough time for his teammates to reset the block, pick up Ronaldo's teammates, close space for Ronaldo himself to run into after the 1-on-1, etc.). Even though the 1999 Beckham/2006 CR7 winger of crosses into the box (Ronaldo was already moving away from that by 07/08) has been replaced by inverted wide-forwards (which Robben/CR helped pioneer), underlapping/overlapping and long-passing fullbacks and free-roaming false 9s, Ronaldo always had a habit of running the down the wing without mapping the pitch. The best dribblers can drive towards Zone 14 (central) - this is much harder than wide because outnumbered, less space and time, BUT the advantage is that a successful dribble or throughball in this Zone increases the likelihood of a goal far more than any other area of the pitch, so Messi (or Hazard, Baggio, Gascoigne, Zola) emphasises dribbling and playmaking here partly because he's lost the pace to go wide, but regardless of speed his close-control and vision are devastating in close-quarters despite it being more technically demanding and riskier (and he can pick out runs of wide players - Alba, DiM). The advantage out on the wings is that it is easier to complete a dribble because it's less crowded and opponents can be isolated into duals and races - the disadvantage is that, to quote Cruyff, the best defender in the world is the white line around the pitch, so you're effectively cutting off half your body viz. passing options. Of course, wingers stretch the pitch and the opposition during 3-on-3s, counters, overloads, 50/50 transitions, etc. - which is why you don't want a row of Messis; you still need the fullbacks and wingers to provide that wide outlet. But Ronaldo went wide even when he could cross early or pass to the overlapping fullback, or drive/pass centrally into the final third, hence Rooney's regular frustration, and even out-wide he often took too long to release the cross, to beat his man, ran towards the cornerflag, hence RVN's frustration. When he had vertical space during stretched transitions, he was capable of driving centrally (06 Fulham, Villa, Villarreal 09) but his dribbling close-control and playmaking were never elite. To be fair, his game could have been refined assuming he was capable of humility and playmaking, but I'm skeptical of both. He always struggled with mapping the pitch.
Ronaldo is right footed, and he always cuts in to the right. The step over was his 2nd option. As a defender you had to either defend him cutting in or stepping over and because he was too fast, you’d fail either ways. Mission impossible.
He almost always went to the left. The defenders knew it, but they couldn't do anything about it. It's so weird 🤔 When they can defend the left side perfectly, he went to the right.
People saying he would always go left, he would you just wouldn’t know when

Like this comment if you think that there is only ONE Ronaldo, and it’s this one.
how has this only 70k views? it should have 70million
3:07 one of my favorite clips of his. Shame it wasn't a goal.
I learned stepovers because of R9
He mostly goes left because defenders would prefer to push him to dummy the ball to the left side where his left foot is weaker than his right foot. So defenders were ready to commit to intercept a right sided Puah from a stepover. However this is not a problem for Ronaldo who could score from the angle from a right side or drive in with the left side.
In most cases Ronaldo was more than happy to drive left further to provide and assist into the penalty box for an incoming forward or attacking midfielder to connect with his pass or cross
And Figo was doing that too on the right
Yes.. Agreed, CR7 stepover is useless.

You can see that CR7, Zlatan, Neymar or even Mbappé learned from him
This video makes Robinho and Denilson look like circus clown...... You don’t need 20 stepovers to pass a defender! Occasionally CR7 too.
0:35 you watch a couple of seeconds of this and you might think that he is left-footed but he isnt!
Jacquet was right. Only 5 times Ronaldo took left side of the defender, among maybe 100-200 stopover in the video.
Easy to read tbh. He turns into his left 99% of the time.
😂 yet no one was able to guard him
Yeah easy to read you say yet the defenders still couldn’t stop him
@@maguirethegoat213 it was his explosiveness out of the step over that made him hard to tackle
Kids be like Ronaldo does best step over but we all know who does it the best fast and effective
You don't see these types of skills anymore in football
He almost always went to the left. The defenders knew it, but they couldn't do anything about it.
It's so weird 🤔
When they can defend the left side perfectly, he went to the right.
It’s cause he reads what they’re about to do
In Spanish is called BICICLE……
R9 is not footballer. football is ronaldo
