Casey uses a plethora of scream techniques. As is evidenced by this song, against his vox on Icarus Lives!, and ultimately contrasted against his recent performance on Oh Sleeper's "The Pitch". Casey is by far the most talented and versatile vocalist Periphey has worked with, by a very wide margin.
PART 1: Let me start by saying that both Spencer and Casey are AMAZING vocalists, probably the best ones out there. Spencer is improving very quickly and both his cleans and his growls were so much better on the Icarus EP as proof of that. Casey is probably improving as well... no real way to tell since he doesn't seem to release shit.
I come to this almost every night. I just hope one day it'll get recorded with Nolly behind production and Spencer on vocals(Although Casey is a fucking beast in this), then... I can die happy and at peace.
+William Jones I'd love to see a side project Involving Misha and Casey, because his voice is just ridiculously superior to Spencer's voice. I'd love to see Alex Bois back with the band as well, because he's cool as shit.
True true,a speaking voice example would be a good indication. In my opinion, the best way to figure out a singer is by testing out their low range.Anyone can improve and disguise their natural voice when trained to sing higher but you can't your low register,THAT will never change. G5-A5 is still in common baritone range.I myself am a bass-baritone and I've hit a C5,albeit only twice when my voice was at it's most comfortable.
Juggernaut is an upcoming Concept Album from Periphery. Idk when it's coming out, but supposedly Jake, Misha, and Mark have already started recording on it.
Casey doesn't use false chord for screaming pretty sure. It sounds very fry screamish to me. Plus apparently Spencer used fries on the first album, and casey apparently taught him how to scream.
@Electrofarce the song is called inertia and its going to be part of the juggernaut concept album so on soundclick he labels it that so that people know that its part of the juggernaut idea
@ignjholioallmighty Judging from the very audible inhales, I would say that it's Casey Sabol. If I'm not mistaken, he left Periphery to pursue a different musical career.
@jonnyboulanger Hasn't been released yet...it'll have Spencer's vocals on it though. And Matt on drums, redone and everything. Should be another huge epic piece like "Racecar". I asked Jake if they're gonna do something with it and he said yes but be patient...
I'd heard that before, but forgot how the harsh vocal parts really went. It's pretty good for Spence, but I still reckon Passenger has his best screams (his cover of Heretic Anthem is beast as well). I'm pretty similarly placed to Chris (though he's way better than me so I can't sustain high singing the same way he can), so I identify a lot more with him and Casey. I reckon Casey's a bit higher, his highs have the same baritone thickness and strain but with a brighter timbre.
@alexstypes I think it is the same case here, because the new version of Frak the Gods Periphery just released on their youtube channel has some MUUUUUUCH improved screams and vocals.
Not only does Casey just killllll this song, get past the first stanza lyrically and the rest is just genuis...anyone mentioning Hadean times in their lyrics is fuckin sick. I know Bulb writes some of the lyrics and if he wrote these I shall haveta shake the mans hand. This song is truly amazing. If and when Spencer redoes the vocals I really hope he does this song justice.
@PunKarmus no worries man,Bulb is planning on redoing this on one of the two albums peripery is releasing next year, I'm pretty sure you'll find the info if you just google MISHA and PERIPHERY
Casey has to be one of the best vocalists I have ever heard, and definitely the best that Periphery has ever had. At least he made an appearance on the album. His vocals are just so raw sounding it is just great.
Hey, a Periphery fan who actually knows how voices work! You're spot on, although I reckon Chris's screams are mostly false chord (some of his highs on the FFAF EP sound like fry, though). I think Spencer's weakness on the self-titled was in his mostly using fry screams, and not very good ones at that; on Passenger and Frak The Gods he demonstrates some false chord lows that sound way better.
Guys stop arguing. Spencer is a clear tenor and Casey bends towards the baritone regiment. Hence Sponce's voice goes up to the sky easier. As a baritone, Casey utilizes the false chords easier making his screams way more brutal. Chris uses a mix of fry and false chord and also has a high baritone quality in his voice. Someone in here called it "rasp" I think.
@RockTheGABE go to bulb's soundclick page and you'll see why. he has over 100 songs recorded before the album; the album was pretty much just a "best of". in fact, icarus lives was originally going to be on the second album along with the rest of juggernaut, but the label made them put it on the debut. all upcoming releases will probably have a good amount of songs already written that are on the soundclick, as well as newly written stuff they wont give away until its releases
@alexstypes Yeah man, exactly. By the way, I just noticed who you were, I used to watch you and Jordan's videos back in the day. You guys inspired me to get into prog metal.
i know i was saying that this was him and not chris. lol but i thought he left cause mainly he wanted to produce music and also he gets nervous and does perform well live. All i know is the man is a lyrical genius and idk who Periphery will write songs up to his caliber... I hope so.
@drumkrazy1984 Well it's probably not autotuned. Every vocal track is autotuned in one way or another, whether it be subtle or otherwise. Since it was a demo, they probably didn't do pitch correcting or whatever.
@HandZeus if you don't have the album yet, then i can assure you they don't. my guess is that the unconventional structure or the length of the song have something to do with its absence.
All arguments about Spencer will be irrelevant after the new album comes out. Just the tiny studio update snippets already sound incredible. They're not using even a touch of pitch correction on the lead melodies, and the screams/growls go lower and sound heavier than anything Chris or Casey did in Periphery. Spencer has stated repeatedly that the S/T doesn't even exist to him vocally anymore, he's improved so much.
This was recorded before they had a drummer Misha programed these drums, if you listen to them they are the same samples from animals as leaders first album
@alexstypes Dude, you should check Periphery's page and see "The Walk" practice they recently uploaded. His screams are getting pretty tight, especially his highs.
I am black. So Black on Black crime FTW. And I was stating a simple fact. If you shift pitch the track up two semitones Casey goes into Spenser's range. It's not about quality of the singer, but the range in which they sing. Sorry if I offended you.
@@HugoStiglitz88 say what you want but Casey was and still is simply a better vocalist than Spencer. I do however think Spencer’s a better fit for Periphery specifically.
i'm disappointed this one didn't make the album. I have a hard time believing they have 12 songs that are better. also, Casey is still the best vocalist they've had.
I totally forgot that the vocalist defines the band's genre! Note: This was done with an OLDER vocalist. You're acting like this is the only song Periphery have ever produced.
This is the best djent song ever made, the stars aligned for this one song with this singer
This song would've been the perfect first song on their debut album IMO, it just builds so well at the beginning
Would have tied perfectly in to All New Materials.
Matthew Baillie honestly could have done without a few of the vocal tones. Yeah the guy can sing but sometimes it’s too much especially with the weird change spencer could do this whole song justice
Connorevs probably a rearrangement would help this big time!

Beyond the plane I know, into
the emptiness break the code,
In bereavement's throes,
violently alone.
Falling eternally,
I fall within the light
Am I gone?
Deep inside hadean walls I spawn
And see it all
I feel in love, I feel love
When I'm real...
His screams are so fucking good. I wish he didn't go pop but gotta make a living some how I guess
Still listening to this in 2022. Still have the tattered shirt with this logo that Orbin made. \m/
LOVE PERIPHERY, I can't wait until their first album comes out early next year!!!
So, did you like it?
plz respond

BRING THIS BACK OH MY GOODNESS
Casey has angelic clean vocals and demonic screams.
The BIG OLE breath in the beginning. Dude's gettin after it..
This needs to be on P3! On an unrelated note the outro progression kinda sounds like Intervals' Inertia.
Just checked, yea your right, I can hear the resemblance.
Yes but it was recorded like 7 years before intervals
The clean tone on this song is absolutely unreal. It's so well dialed in, it's insane.
this song has so much of emotion. I love it
Finishing up tracking vocals for inertia today. POW! - Spencer Sotelo
They should really re-record this
SpeakersR-lyef Audio 110% man. First heard this a decade ago and it’s STILL fucking amazing
egyszerüen tökéletes!
Totaly perfect
I hope they include this and the Fast Ones on their next album with Spencer... I'm itching for the new album already...
Hahaha who heard the version Misha wrote about farts? That was awesome
Listen in 2019!!! haha
The best singer of Periphery...
Who's the singer?
@@Vicente_Moreno , is Casey Sabol man!
I saw these dudes live. They are absolutely incredible entertainers and are the raddest dudes ever after. PERIPHERY RULES

That sounds cool. Too bad Casey does mainly country now though and Alex isn't playing guitar much anymore.

0:23 o_o damn, do that more often lol
@iLyykMuzik Absolutely man, I love HS song passenger with Spence. Oh thanks man...I definitely wanna cover some Periphery eventually.
Why they didn't publish the vocal version ?
@alexstypes
I think it is the same case here, because the new version of Frak the Gods Periphery just released on their youtube channel has some MUUUUUUCH improved screams and vocals.
yeah this new bunch of tech metal bands is really awesome. and i'm lucky enough to live in the same area as periphery and AAL

The Juggernaut album will be their second release (I think). Considering their first album hasn't even come out yet, it'll probably be a little while!

Definitely Casey Sabol, Chris joined way after this songs recording.

Chris is now singing for Haunted Shores they have a myspace
Spencer has hinted at just that lately

this is a terrific song!

Is Casey singing on this one?
perfect balance of clean/growl vocals

Go listen to the new sampler clip on their myspace. The new singer actually hits all these notes and not under his breath. I came buckets.

does anybody have to mp3 to this?!?!? I would be the happiest camper!
This is Casey Sabol, their earlier vocalist ^^
Although they just replaced Chris with some new guy, look at their myspace :o
This comment :D
Such a crime this still hasn't been released as a new periphery song with spence on vox. Til then, this is casey's song.
Just Amazing!
I listen to this song pretty much just to hear that section haha. fucking sick song, yes, but that part is absolutely glorious.
The "reaching for..." line sounds so much like Jetpacks was Yes. I wonder if JWY is related to this somehow.
i almost hope that spencer does this song.. his way.. but with the same feel and shit! itll be fucking amazing..
This better be the key piece to Juggernaut. This could EASILY be there best song with Spencer if they redid it.
@lkaruga Casey was before Chris, though.Other than that, You're correct. :P
how come Periphery has so many songs that are not on the 2010 album?? I am confused..
man. This guy is good.
@alexstypes Dude, you should check Periphery's page and see "The Walk" practice they recently uploaded. His screams are getting pretty tight, especially his highs.
THIS MAN finally made a new song
I cant find this version with Casey's Vocals on Bulbs Soundclick =/ Does any one have this MP3 uploaded somewhere?
Casey and Spenser should work together. I can see an amazing duo here.
Great stuff

It's Casey Sabol.
