As the fall television season approaches it conclusion, MALDEF would like to recognize Marc Cherry, Creator of Desperate Housewives, Eva Longoria Parker, and everyone at ABC Studios for their episode this season portraying a Latino familys experience in the United States on the long-running primetime hit series Desperate Housewives.
After attending last years event honoring the incredible charitable contributions of my dear friend Eva, I found great inspiration in MALDEF to tell a story about the importance of heritage as a component of the American family, stated Marc Cherry.
In the episode, Longoria Parkers character reminisces about her childhood, and rediscovers her long-surppressed pride in her Latino heritage, and teaches her daughter about the importance of her Latina identity. With comedic poignancy, the entire Solis family gains a renewed understanding and appreciation of their proud heritage and their familys path to success in United States.
The television industry, though centered in Los Angeles, a city whose population is now half Latino, has far too long ignored and neglected Latinos, who have been the nations largest minority group for nearly a decade. It is heartening to have such an important series focus on the heritage shared by so many in the television audience, stated Thomas A. Saenz, President and General Counsel, MALDEF.
