Berry Gordy Jr, who is actually a Third who was The President said it would be good to have two separate entities but from that moment on, Smokey was The "Star" and his Three Partners Warren "Pete" Moore, Bobby Rogers (Cousin Of His Former First Wife Claudette) and Ronnie White were backing vocalists. Even on Ed Sullivan, Smokey was up front while the other three were in the back.
They were probably told not to get too raunchy for TV. Did you ever see Heaven Help Us aka Catholic Boys where Rooney played by Kevin Dillon (Matt's Brother) who pretty much does the Bump & Grind with his Girlfriend Janine in 1965.
