  • This is the second part of an epic Newschannel 8 Special that I had the privilege of producing that chronicles the history of Tampa Stadium. From the groundbreaking on November 4, 1967, early years of football in the 70's to the Bucs and their final season in the Ole Sombrero in 1997. It also includes highlights from Super Bowl XVII and XXV and the USFL Championship Game in 1984. The second half of the show is dedicated to the Tampa Bay Bandits, Tampa Bay Rowdies and the many incredible concerts and celebrations that happened in the Ole Sombrero! This show is hosted by Dick Crippen and the late Tom McEwen, two legendary sports journalist in Tampa Bay.

    That last comment from Tom:
"Let's hope in 30 yrs when we're doing a final salute to Raymond James Stadium that we'll have a few more Bucs wins to talk about."
Well it's been 25+ yrs so far and we sure do! How about TWO Super Bowl wins!! Glad Tom got to see one of them.
As far as a final salute to the "new" stadium, I don't think that's happening anytime soon!
Long live The Big Sombrero, my favorite stadium ever!

Wide right I can still see it in my nightmares every night I see Scott lining up for the kick we're finally going to have a Superbowl in Buffalo but then the snap the put down the hold the kick and it's always wide right just like in reality. I'm so glad he knocked the stadium down

Whoa!!!! My first time in Tampa Stadium was the "testimonial game" for Rodney Marsh! I had just moved to Tampa and my friends took me. I didn't even know who Rodney Marsh was!

The American Standard toilets in my house are from the skyboxes. The bench under my oak tree is a section of bleachers from Tampa Stadium. They let a lot of people take some stuff before the real demo started. Now... they would say insurance won't let us. I guess that was a different time unfortunately.

Funny how time changes things. Hard seats, broiling heat, but damn miss it!

What would it be like if they installed a roof above Tampa Stadium?
