Hey Pokemon Champions, what's going on?! It's Champion Blaze here and at the beginning of Pokemon Journeys in episode 12 we were introduced to the Pokemon World Championships in "Flash of the Titans." This episode featured Lance Vs Leon. It was the iconic Red Gyarados Vs Charizard. This was a pretty good battle and a good introduction into the PWC. But it's full of little easter eggs and hidden details that I'm sure you missed such as Leon battling like Red from Pokemon Origins, or Lance and Leon battling in a similar fashion to Ash and Alain during the Kalos League finals. Let's breakdown all this references and easter eggs you might've missed!

It was great seeing Lance again after so many years! It’s always cool to see these parallels as well!
Also, can’t forget about the time where Red Gyarados stood its ground against Kyogre!
It was also cool seeing another Gyarados using the same kind of combo in Episode 114 of Journeys! Now I’m thinking of Easter Eggs and details in THAT episode too 😅
I still wish Lance could’ve said those quotes to Ash, even if said quotes had to be tweaked a little bit. They barely had any interaction in Journeys 😭

I was thinking that this was an exhibition match, or more like Leon v Flint later on- not a tournament, but one helping rank everyone for the tournament at the end.

I guess an exhibition match would make more sense but the fact they actually treat this as the finals is so weird

If you look closely at Leon's and Lance's mouths, they move implying some kind of speaking although nothing is heard when Gyarados and Charizard come out. Maybe their orders to come out were left out for some artistic reason, but this has not been fixed in the animation.

I mean maybe. I even rewatched the episode in Japanese to see if it was a dubbed change but they don’t say anything in either version. So it’s really weird

something odd to me is how soon the pwc starts back up like right after its coclusion ash watches the final match then like right after hes already competing is he basically always competing in the pwc

That was definitely a weird piece of writing for the PWC. Like there I think at least 4 different master class battles before Ash got to the masters 8. So idk what that was about
