  • Russia is well known for many things. Vodka, its past, and well, them failing at war. One thing many people don't know is that a few of Russia's diesel locomotives ended up in the Land of Free, for different reasons. Both of which were short-lived.

The Russian units were sent here on the theory that they would be used on unit grain trains. But, Union Pacific, Burlington Northern and Santa Fe would not have allowed them on their tracks. The grain moved all right with Dash7’s, Dash8’s and SD60’s of all variants.

They don’t allow locomotives on our tracks because they use the SA3 couplers and They run on 1520 Gauge.

Very interesting episode! I knew about the stored engines in Houston, but Idid not know about GE importing the TE10s by truck to rebuild them for Russia. I wonder if they're still in service and how well they perform when compared to the non-rebuilt counterparts.

Would've been cool to see those Russian engines working here in the US. Makes me wonder how long they would've lasted, or what railroads would take them. It'd be funny to see the paint scheme of UP or Santa Fe on one of those.

TEM-7 seems to resemble the locomotive they were based off from the Alco RS-1/RSD-1. What could have been done to the TEM-7s was that they could have been sent to MPI Caterpillar EMD and Wabtec GE for examination and then ask the Russian builder for licensed production of the TEM-7 locomotive 2TE10 is a development of 2TE109 which is seen in Germany as DR Baureihe 130-132 & 142 DB Baureihe 231-233 & 242. The TE10 could have been a prototype for the Mongolian 2ZAGAL or any of the other rebuilds on that chassis. Nowadays the power packs are sent that way and the locomotive is fitted with these locallt

You call 8k an impressive amount? The M62 diesels saw a total of 7k single and 5k double units produced!
Diesel exports have come full-circle considering the TEMs are based off the RS series if I'm not mistaken.

@@themanformerlyknownascomme777 they didn't, they never left in american soil because the state department banned sales to the soviet union while production was underway and they were bought by the milwaukee road instead

@@unaizilla they left BEFORE the Soviet Union was a thing. They were shipped to the Russian Empire during WW1 just before the Russian Revolution. When the Soviet Union came and Congress banned exports the units that had not been shipped over/were in the middle of production ended up getting sold to various American railroads.

Many of these Soviet locomotives have outlived the GE U boats/Dash 7s and the SD40-2s in America and Canada. Basically European locomotives outlasting Canadian/American locomotives
