  • This video shows how I adapted the Harley Cell phone mount to the Ciro Cell phone holder. I custom wired a standard 12v USB charge adapter to the accessory connector in the headlight assembly. The system worked well and the mount was very solid. I decided to do my own custom wiring because I had already tapping into this same Accessory adapter to power the Halo on my passing/auxiliary lights.

    Thanks for the video. Just got my RKS. You made it real easy. Hardest part was where to ground. I used the 2nd screw from the front /top of nacelle. There wasn’t anything else wired there but working so far. Again thanks and look forward to the next trip with GPS and not worrying about battery dying.

    Love that they used common IDE Molex connectors for the aux stuff in the Nacelle. Check out ”Positaps” if you haven't already used them. They're a little expensive per unit compared to standard crimps but their fully reusable when you want to revise or add things.

    Great footage! You obviously know a lot about electric. Ty, this makes it a lot shorter route to the headlamp instead of the auxilliary connector cable at the left of the bike behind the side cover. 👍👍

    I recommend using a large ty-wrap to secure your hydraulic reservoir while you put on this mount.

    Russell, thank you for sharing, I was hoping you showed where you ran the wires (from headlong cover) to the 12V cigarette plug & how & where you mounted the cigarette 12V plug,, anyway, thank you.

      Hi. I did not have to run the power wire from the batter. Instead, I simply used a "Y" 4 pin molex connector and plug that into the Harley Accessory connector behind the headlight assembly.

    very nice. I have a 2015 FLHR. So you just ran the actual USB charging cable for the phone under the headset cover? So your wire is then always connected?

    • @rtabcum
      @rtabcum  3 года назад

      Yes. It is wired in all the time however, the power only energizes when the ignition is on so it does not draw from the battery when ignition is off. The phone side wire just hangs loose if I don't have my phone.

    Does the molex connector with purple/black wires provide a constant 12v? I remember reading on the forums that it would drop down to 3v or something after the bike ran for a while.

    • @rtabcum
      @rtabcum  4 года назад

      On the factory side molex accessory connector works for me in the 2020 Road King Special. I traced that wire and it went to a 20Amp fuse under the left rear panel. Not sure if other years are different? I have my heated grips on it also.

    • @rtabcum

      Another note, don't touch the black wire. I have the Cool flow fan installed and the switch for the fan control is connected to this same molex connector.

    thank for the video, i am trying to do this. so is it just buy an ide cable take out the black cables and connect it to the accessory cable in the nacelle in one end and another end splice the yellow together with the cigarette lighter? not very clear on the black ground though...

    • @rtabcum
      @rtabcum  4 года назад

      Yes. Only the yellow wire on the IDE will cary +12v. To get the negative or ground, you must tap into a chassis or a wire that goes to the chassis. In my case, I found a wire that was attached to a screw that bolt to chassis right under the top of the headlight assembly. You can find other ground wires too like the ones from the headlight.

    Hi RT when charging your phone when riding your bike does the power voltage fluctuate mine does usb port type charger only when i throttle up fast any thoughts thnxxx?

    • @rtabcum
      @rtabcum  3 года назад +1

      I did not notice any voltage fluctuation. I would assume some fluctuation between 12v to 14.1v would be normal. I used the Anker USB car adapter and it seems to charge the phone to full after 30 minutes. I did not notice it ever stop or intermittently charge during my rides but just reving the engine at a stand still, no problems.. Verify your connection for loose crimps on studs. Also check negative ground mounting point. I solder most of my wires to reduce intermittent connections. If you use a 12v car socket with a usb adapter, make sure its seated in well. If you have a voltmeter, verify the voltage going into the USB adapter while reving the engine. It should never fall below 12v. If it does, there is a connection or ground issue.

    Do you know why everyone uses the perch mount instead of bar mount? It seems like the bar mount would allow for more room to operate your controls. Thanks!

    • @rtabcum
      @rtabcum  3 года назад +1

      Personally I like the solid method of the perch mount. You are right about spacing as the perch mount has it too close to the controls. I've used bar mounts in the past with other bikes and it vibrates significantly compared to the perch mount.

    • @Steve-qn8gn
      @Steve-qn8gn 3 года назад

      @@rtabcum Actually, that's what breaks the cameras in the phones. The rigidness of the metal mounts push the vibrations to the phones and in turn the guts inside the phone that move. I'd never recmomend solid mounts on a motorcycle for phones.

      I have not found anything yet. The charge cable is tie-wrap to the steering but the end just dangle there. Would be good to have a dummy socket to plug it into when not in use.

    I am trying to connect a multi media player to the Molex. How can I check if there is power on the Molex cables. Right now it does not work.

    • @rtabcum
      @rtabcum  3 года назад

      Use a multi-meter to check the voltage on each of the molex pins and compare that to chassis ground. You should be able to find one pin that is positive if your bike is a 2020 RKS.

    QQ: Why are you mentioning in the comment to not to use the black wire from the provided Molex connector ?

    • @rtabcum
      @rtabcum  3 года назад +2

      The black wire on the Harley Molex actually wires back to the ECU and is not chassis ground. When I enabled my Coolflow fan, that black wire was part of the switch circuit for ECU to sense the switch position. So yeah, don't touch the black wire on the Harley molex side.

      Hi Magobin, just saw your comments. You said you checked this with a volt meter and it shows 12v? Can you check this same terminal while the USB is connected? Make sure you are also using the "chassis" as the negative or ground. Do not use the black wire on that same connector. If you are in Northern California, let me know.
