Brings back a lot of good memories. I had the honour of commissioning both PERTH and BRISBANE, and being drafted to HOBART for a few weeks before I paid off. It is a shame that none of them were kept as part of a Navy museum, but at least the Bridge and Mount 51 still "live" in the War Memorial.
Beautiful ship with great classic design lines. Many years ago I served in the USN on the USS King DDG-41. She was a Farragut class destroyer which looks very similar to the HMAS DDG-41 ( a Perth class ). Thanks for posting this video, although not my ship she looks like a very close relative and it brought back some memories ! Especially the clip with DDG-41s bow busting the heavy seas.. nothing like being propelled up a ladder on the wave …
Thank you for a totally awesome video, I served in Hobart back in 1970 what a privileged to see her in the footage you have. OK THE BIG QUESTION Is there any chance of a High Definition re-make? That I'd love to see.
I attended the christening of the XO's daughter on Hobart in 1970. Lt Cdr Latin. First time I was on a DDG. Later I worked on the 5XXX upgrade of the NCDS combat system , and spent many an hour seariding on the Brisbane. In sea state 9 the inclinometer reached interesting numbers, and the rooster tail at 32+ kts was as high as the aft funnel. Lovely boats.
I have so many great memories of my time on HMAS Brisbane from 99-01 - it was technically a brief time but it was a huge experience! Thanks for this video - I've rewatched it several times and it always makes me smile! I have a question for anyone who served in the Navy in the late 90's/early 00's - do you remember the type of breathing apparatus we wore for firefighting/toxic hazards? I currently train firefighters in breathing apparatus and it's starting to bother me that I can't remember what the twin cylinder MSA (I think!) air sets were that I was initially instructed to use!! Does BD88 sound right?? Cheers in advance!!
I served on board the USS Lynde McCormick DDG-8 from 80-85, the best years of my life!! As we would say back in the day,Booter,if you ain't a Tin Can Sailor then you ain't SHIT!!! MM2 Easton,A-Gang
My heart lays with with DDG’s 41 & 38 … a Persian excursion and 4yr+ on the Perth … NBCD yoeman on both , The gulf ‘90/91 was a challenge … DC central was home … :)
The footage is from across about a decade or so. I first put this together in 2005 with a Skid Row song as the soundtrack. It has turned up in many different forms in lots of places since then.
I agree sglasto they should have kept the Melbourne as well. But when they got rid of her to the Chinese little did they know it was going to be used as a study ship for the Chinese and their efforts to get a carrier. Which they have already now. She could have been put to a better use than scrapped or sunk as was with the DDG's sad ending for all.

My brother was among the first crew on the MacDonough DLG-8

It's an absolute travesty they didn't berth BRISBANE in Darling Harbour at the Maritime Museum. (And I've heard all their pathetic excuses!)
