- This 177 troy ounce gold nugget (5,505 grams - 5.5kgs) was found by a prospector with a hand held metal detector near Ballarat, Victoria, Australia on January 16, 2013.
What a find!!! No it wasn't me.... It was found at a depth of a little over 60 cm (2 ft) with a modern detector with a small coil. The prospector said it sounded like the bonnet of a car through the head phones. It was lying flat (broad side up) and he carefully dug it up. In this video it hasn't been cleaned. It is approximately 220mm long, 140mm wide and has a maximum depth of 45mm.
Ok, this nugget was found with a Minelab GPX5000 super metal detector, with an Advantage Plus 'Sadie' mono eliptical coil, and a Rooster Booster audio enhancer (used with an external speaker).
The prospector said he heard the signal, kicked off about 100mm (4 inches) of leaf mulch from the surface, and thought the ground looked in original condition ie it hadn't been dug previously.
It was lying flat in the ground, and was over 60cm (2 feet) deep in the earth/clay/gravels. So this means he and his detector heard it at an incredible depth from the search coil (the disc that is at the end of the hand held detector).
If you would like to buy this nugget please contact: The Mining Exchange Gold Shop, mail@thegoldshop.com.au genuine expressions of interest close Tuesday Australian Time.

My hands would be shaking too if I was holding my family's future in my hands
If I lived in Ballerat I would start a mine in my backyard! According to geologist, there is still a lot of gold deposits under the historical town.
Just came here from BBC News. Awesome find, looks like you're shaking with excitement (and/or joy), good on ya!!
I once found an 18ct gold engagement ring with 5 small diamonds on top with my
C-Scope 990D metal detector 6 months after buying it in the 90's, and thought I was lucky!!
Is it real ?!!!! The finder or finders must have heart attack🍾🥂congratulations 👏👏👏👍
You're a blessed business owner!
It's awesome the prospector was able to trust someone when finding this nugget. It's difficult to find someone with your qualities nowadays.
Thats the nugget that i lost a few weeks back while hiking! Thank you for finding it for me!
Worth roughly $352,580 in pure weight, but they always say these nuggets have a higher value as-is. Congrats!
For sure that's a 3/4 of a million-dollar nugget
I live in Victoria where 90% of The Worlds Gold Nuggets are found. People say most of the nuggets were found in the Gold Rush about 150 years ago, but back then they didn't have Large Earth Moving Machinery so they really only scratched the surface, I bet there is heaps more out there, and there's a huge areas , the size of small countries , small populations in rural areas where they are found. I bet there will be more found as the Gold price keeps going up.
This nugget is now sold, and named. It is for ever to be known as 'The Ballarat Nugget". Thank you to everyone who made genuine offers to buy it, and to everyone who wrote positive comments.
What made you want to go out there, just curious!
Hi Everyone, isn't it 'cool' that the prospector dug a relatively small hole, and 'pulled a house out of it'. There is still hope or all of us prospectors that after 162 years of continuous gold discovery in and around Ballarat (Victoria, Australia) that huge nuggets can still be found? I know exactly where the nugget was found, but can't say, but I can absolutely guarantee it was found no where near Clunes (Victoria).
i have a friend that is a geologist here in AUS. Apparently Ballarat still has an enormous amount of gold underneah As it has an historic town built over the the top nothing much can be done. f I lived there i would get a prospecting license and start digging a hole in my backyard!
Thanks for posting, very interesting to see such a large piece of gold being found.
Just imagine: it's like digging up a paid-off mortgage, 2 new cars, and college for your kids, all at once!
Gold has a lot of uses in technology and science, and there is only a limited amount of it. Its not just a regular 'rock'.
and i feel lucky if i ever find a coin on the street 😳🥴😵
My goodness now thats a BIG find - congrates to whom ever dug it up...
Gr8 find! 99.95% of all gold finds are just tiny specs!..
WoW pure class! you and multiply that valuation by 10! There is many a billionaire who would like to own rare natural beauty. Well done and keep the search on for more.
Maybe in some countries, but not in Australia! Finders keepers in most cases. In many areas you need a (state issued) fossicker's license and in some areas companies hold mineral rights to to certain patches of land and exclude fossickers.
How to make $300k in a week:
1) Buy enough gold bars to melt down and fashion into a sexy nugget shape, say like a hinge off of Heaven's Golden Gates. 2) Make sure to add some impurities for authenticity. 3) Buy a metal detector and find your way to a world-famous prospecting area, like, say, Ballarat Vic. 4) Dodge bush-fires and heatwaves in the middle of the hottest month
5) 'Discover' your nugget and make a sideways video to show it off! = That's a BINGO!
Many congratulations! It is really wonderful when patience, perseverence and hard work pays off! :-)
That's better than winning 300k.imo...the rush factor from such a find would be priceless...damn nice
a giant opal was once dug up there and thrown away because it had no lights. Australia is untouched!
That's so big it's unbelievable. Cograts from the UK!
good thing you sold it before gold prices crashed! Although they will be back up in a year or so
Good find! That's your pension, right there, in your hands and the gold has gone up in value by around $3USD per oz, just today, so far.
Congratulations on your amazing find from England!
Minelab should cut you a sponsorship deal with that find!
Hey Troy, congrats on the find. I hope you net a neat $500,000AUD for the nugget and get you and your family a nice place to live and whatnot. Really pleased for you!
That metal detector is $6000+ with the extras, a serious piece of gear
holy moly man...well bloody done!!
Nice one mate. Made the news in the UK. Very happy for you.
Now get it posted to Cash for Gold or something and cash in ;)
acid-testing will say if it's so; the metal-detectors are also tunable now (good ones) to specific elements (gold is not iron, iron pyrites is 'fools gold')
Hi Everyone, remember to watch our wide format video post, with audio! Plus also the post of the finding of the nugget. All under the TroyAurum Channel!!!
Well done
It's so bizarre. I can see how people can get gold fever :)
And I'm puzzled by how that nugget came to be there.
Are there usually clusters of gold or are they usually all alone at a site?
you have no idea how heavy that thing is.
Wow!!!! Probably worth more as a specimen than it's weight in gold...to someone. Do you know how/where this was found?!
Sales of metal detectors are going to sky-rocket
what kind of metal detector did you use to find it? i am looking at getting one, but so many out there.............i want people to anwer who actually have one and it works the way it should...............any idea's or comments??
His hands are shaking, he's just realised he's hit the jackpot!!
They still have to purify it from all the other minerals in the nugget, when their done that they smelt it down it make pure gold. It's real
congrats on the amazing find! hope the luck continues in your favor,
This is what dreams are made of. Well done to you sir!
I'm not sure wether he is shaking because it's heavy or because he is so excited to be holding it..
I am not sure what me being American has to do with knowing basic units of measure. I would have been nervous myself holding roughly $300KUSD in my hands. That is a large man. I would hope his arms strength could confidently manipulate 5kgs/11pounds for that period of time if not of that value.
From what I read earlier, it is expected to earn about $300,000.
My only point was that the weight is in the title (for americans, we europeans don't have clue of what 177 ounces are), so my comment was kind of redundant, only I do think the weight is the cause. How can you tell he's a large man? By the size of the nugget? A piece of rock that size would have weighed only a little more that 500 g/1.1 pounds. Sure it's valuable but it's not gonna break and lose that value if dropped on the floor. Maybe the floor would (just kidding).
That dude seemed pretty nervous holding that nugget
the value of the gold is 250-300k USD but considering it is one big nugget id say people would pay at least double.
Why would anyone go out of their way to pretend like they found a gold nugget?
Close to $300,00 as of gold prices right now. Smart thing to do is sell it and buy silver and gold in Coin form or just safe it.
Troy - if you pull it off public line and give the Beeb exclusivity, you could find yourself another $300K!
Very nice find well done mate from Canada
well done big fella! i would be well happy if that popped out my local ATM!
When he sells it for 300k, he'll also have to pay about $100,000 in taxes on it. You don't get to skip taxes just because you found your source of income. So he really only gets about 200k from it.
Now he can afford the most expensive Metal Detectors ever !!!!!!!!!
Congratulations mate. Hope you spend the money wisely and make it work for you!
It's not fake, just not purified yet, i live in ballarat, this was all over the news am
Do you know how much one center meter squared of gold weighs ? You must be strong
Its value has been estimated at more than A$300,000 ($315,000: £197,000).
With a metal detector, two feet in the ground. Hmmm!
You should probably keep that and use it as collateral for all of your future endeavors
Gooooooooldfinger......He's the man, the man with the Midas touch.
It kind of looks to me like a slingshot. This will be worth more as a nugget than just the gold value.
@TroyArum - How was the big gold nugget found? What's the story?
Im going to Ballarat on the weekend with a metal detector and hope to find something!!!
I agree, it the value of gold in that nugget. The size of that nugget"s got a value by itself.
Congratulations! That is an amazing find!
Nice find, once in a lifetime. I would just have kept it quiet and cashed in.
It's value has been estimated to be more than £197,000
You are lucky to live where you live mate.
Sin duda, momentos preocupantes para los ciudadanos australianos. Desde Sevilla, España estamos con vosotros :)
Wow where’d you find that out how much is it valued
I did the math, and all that gold would be around $250,000; quarter of a million.
very cool piece its still out there yup
Please can this man tell us the name and maker of this hand held metal detector.
what song is that playing the back, it is absolutely intoxicating
Actually its valued at $300.000 - I wouldn't mind finding one myself!
Nugget shooting in Australia is on my bucket list. Just a few fractional gram nuggets and IO would be very happy.
spend it wisely fella, from the UK
I recon my fingers would be shaking as-well, well done mate
imagen such a lump of gold in its original shape
in a natural shape
now thats something for sure
Troy, I work for BBC World News and we'd like to use your video on air. Would that be ok with you?
Something tells me that Metal Detector sales in your area are going to skyrocket. If you were looking for a way to spend all that money you just found, it might be a business in the making! ;)
On Discovery Channel they go all the way out to Ghana, get shot at, robbed and end up with nothing. This guy goes in his back yard with a metal detector for a couple hours and ends up with $300k. Anyone else think something looks fishy?
Pop A Molly Im Sweatin! whooooo!!
Well done mate.
What an amazing find!
Wow! Good for you dude! Great find. Enjoy it!
That could turn into an amazing statue.
Well done from Ireland!
Do your maths again; its 5.5kgs with an estimated value of at least $300,000 US.
great discovery my friend, greetings from your friend Fernando indonesian traditional gold seeker ️🌟⛏️⛏️🇲🇨
It was not in his back yard, it was at a popular gold hunting area.
Keep your pessimism in check.
You can see the excitement from his shaky hands ! GOSH I wish I could find $300,000 in my backyard....all I find is fresh cat poop from last night.
Awesome find Congrats !
His hands are shaking from the awesomeness
Hunted the area many times in the 1980's

Que lugar você achou essa pedra amigo
It looks like a Gangster shark has lost his tooth! Lol
Well please, tell us what would you monetize then?
Well done mate! Well done!
