Well from people's perspective all pokemons just say their names, so it kinda makes sense if it is the same thing from a pokemon's point of view.
Aoi Magi which is probably part of the joke! You'd think they would understand us from what we see in the anime, but there is no proof (or even proof of the contrary) that pokemon understand every word humans say.
I think there's an episode where you can read subtitles of what the Pokemon are saying, but I don't remember if they address the subject. I think Pokemon understand human speech, since Meowth taught himself to speak, and many Pokemon have iqs higher than humans. The idea that they're too young in this seems pretty plausible, but I just find it hilarious that they hear us like we hear them. It's just a clever joke.
