Anderson Cooper is unbelievable. His obsession with Iyanla can be read quite racist, despite his well-meaning interest in her work, but it isn't just her work, he describes his fascination with the way she speaks, her gestures, how he imagines her preparing body wash, all can be read as a stereotypical re-enactment of black woman-hood.
Yes, I thought so too; he means well, but it is a little over-the-top to me. I don't know if I'd call it racist as much as I would call it racially & culturally insensitive.
This interview was really cringeworthy, and I usually love Anderson. He was basically poking fun of her at every step and not taking her life's work seriously at all. His own brother committed suicide so he has experience with life trauma, and I've seen him be very empathetic in interviews with victims of natural disasters, etc. For some reason he just completely characaturized Iyanla throughout this interview. VERY disrespectful.
You felt offended at the interaction but I'll bet Iyanla felt his intentions were pure although awkward. The great mother doesn't suffer shade from any person lol!
I agree with Randy in that I think you may be a bit sensitive to Anderson's reactions to Iyanla. I think he is genuinely fascinated by and in admiration of her. He tends bemean himself as a WASP and having had a WASP upbringing. He jokes about his upbringing a lot... and yes it makes for good television and he probably is aware that he comes across as cute when he does this but it seems genuine that he admires her wisdom.
Maybe it’s just the fact people live their lives genuinely and people who don’t are “fascinated” by it bc their souls and minds aren’t capable of having that same zest for life so I get the admiration but it’s just creepy and annoying
Another thing: about Anderson..I am really happy he came out because he seems so much more Free now. He seems fun happy and totally free and can be himself. That was the best thing for him is to breathe and be free~ You Go Anderson LOL
Gay men Love black women..They get a lot of their Attitude from us. :-) I love it. I love gay guys they're so much fun And I like Anderson Cooper a lot I think he's great.
I'm glad you didn't take that the wrong way Morris. I'm guilty of the same thing, It's not easy getting out in this world without being exposed to the bullshit that we face. I think being honest about it and keeping it real helps keep our heads clear, as to the reality of what we are dealing with. It doesn't have to turn us negative or destroy us, If we allow that they win.
I hear you. Racial and or cultural insensitivity is a euphemism. It's the politically correct term created to mollify the experience and impact of racially motivated actions or thought. I do agree that it was crazy insensitive. Certainly we understand how well meaning actions can mask all kinds of insensitivity, conscious or otherwise. We call that term in psychology passive aggressive behavior.
Yeah I'm sure that's exactly what it is, my racism, life experiences and lack of security "coloring" my view. ha! Your close reading skills are spot on Randy.
Glad I watched this and just didn't run off after reading some of the comments [1st]. Yes, he did mock IV, but it wasn't in ill-form. Good-hearted. Thankfully. 'Cause I like AC. ..not so much for his work, rarely tune in...last time I did, it was when Janet Jackson was on. But I like him via his mom's Biography on the bio channel. Good piece; wished they'd re-run it. IV read the Virgo piece on the 1st on Abiola's site...it's going to be good. I always read it. :-)
Those two sisters with the swapping tip were too cute. But, seriously? How do you get invited to appear on a show and not know what city it's in, ladies? Hahaha!! They gave me a giggle! ;-)
Hi handsome. Iyanla is very wise as a spiritual adviser. She is unique in how she sees the world, I actually share a lot with her view. I would love to meet her and talk about my life, just being honest. 🥰
his being gay is no bigger of a deal than weahter he prefers an apt or a condo, cake or pie, .. i wish everyone would stop placing his or anyone being gay as such a major thing
ha! i don't think it's mere innocence or naivete. I'd do farther and say that his privilege is also "deeply embedded" in a racial context of our American history.
Just watching this, It SEEMS like he's mocking her... & in the beginning, I'm sure she's tryna figure it out too. But he's truly flattered by her. & so is the staff. He's just corny at how he impersonates her. I've been to one of her "gatherings" & she has a good spirit! ...still haven't tried her soap.
Randy I was being non-combative with you by using sarcasm. I am not completely clear about what you're talking about when you say "we", "they" or what "you" are guilty of. If in fact you are drawing a conclusion about us being black men facing "bullshit" about race and representation, let me be clear, My comment was a concern that drew attention to the ways black women bodies are perceived and mis-represented by white men in positions of power in media. I'm addressing race and male privilege!
Mac I believe you are being too sensitive and reading too much into this. He praised her for her wisdom and experience. I think maybe your own racism, life experiences and lack of security are coloring your view.

No, he certainly appeared well meaning. And yeah his "fascination"
depicts her mannerisms as spectacle.

Yeahhhh, I couldn't watch after 3 minutes. I'm disappointed in him and my heart goes out to her for enduring this treatment.

now that's a pure classy Diva
men vs women, thoughts vs feelings...this is a very culture-specific and general observation/diagnosis.
wow that woman is like a ray of light - she's a blessing from the heavens above.
Another thing: about Anderson..I am really happy he came out because he seems so much more Free now. He seems fun happy and totally free and can be himself. That was the best thing for him is to breathe and be free~ You Go Anderson LOL
They make a good pair together on the show. The on air chemistry is organic between them.
Audience member at :16 asked "who is that?" LOL
Gay men Love black women..They get a lot of their Attitude from us. :-) I love it. I love gay guys they're so much fun And I like Anderson Cooper a lot I think he's great.
They love/hate black women lmfao copy them but disrespect them as humans
It's important to interrupt racist, sexist stuff, no matter how subtle, but especially the subtle.
Hello Iyanla and Anderson. Two cool people
Mockery at it's subtleness.
I'm glad you didn't take that the wrong way Morris.

Anderson is hilarious
ha! i dont think he had bad intentions, but his "fascination" seems more like a mockery of her work and her general mannerisms.

Hi handsome. Iyanla is very wise as a spiritual adviser. She is unique in how she sees the world, I actually share a lot with her view. I would love to meet her and talk about my life, just being honest. 🥰
IYANLA IS BEAUTIFUL AND SOUNDS LIKE WHOOPI GOLDBERG WHEN SHE SPEAK.
She's one of Queen Oprah's people. She seems nice.
his being gay is no bigger of a deal than weahter he prefers an apt or a condo, cake or pie, .. i wish everyone would stop placing his or anyone being gay as such a major thing
I thought same thing when I first saw this video.
Omg just found out from the comments that he's now I can tell

ha! i don't think it's mere innocence or naivete. I'd do farther and say that his privilege is also "deeply embedded" in a racial context of our American history.
