I acquired a free Yamaha RBX170 that I was going to pass along to a friend. Told him to bring me a new set of strings and I'd set it up for him. Similar story to here with the super high action. Once I got it set up, though, it actually played really well, and sounded surprisingly good! You can definitely see where corners were cut (like plastic knobs), but Yamaha's lowest-of-the-low-end basses seem to be a really good value for the money.
I bought this exact model about 2 years ago. It was rated by many RUclipsrs as one of the best basses for beginners. It sure gives you a lot for just under $220! Unfortunately, you have to get the case separately. When I bought mine, it was the height of covid, I had to be attended at the back door and they didn't even have the cardboard box that it came in. I had to carry it as is walking home.
I have this bass in the EW Mango version. Because of the high action as a beginner I stopped playing it, instead using my Glarry GIB. After watching this video, I took the plunge, daring to turn the trussrod two quarter turns and leaving it over night. Wow the action was almost perfect. After one full turn of the saddles it's now my favorite bass. Thanks Dave for teaching us all the little tips here and to not be afraid to work on your own bass.
Excellent! "Santa" brought me one of these last year, needed a setup but fortunately didn't have the sticky-outy thing going on with fret ends. Had a nasty back-bow under string tension from the factory, though, and I thought I was going to have to do the UPS-return-dance-of-frustration. But it turned out the truss rod is double-acting - a *very* pleasant surprise! Pulled that back-bow out like nobody's business! Dave, your videos are what gave me the confidence that I could do the setup. In fact, it was during a search for "bass guitar setup" that I stumbled across your page. I can't thank you enough! I'm out in the sticks, hours from any place that could do the work and I'm comfortable 'fiddling' with things as long as I know basically what is going on. I was at (insert name of anonymous retailer whose name begins with “Guitar” and ends with “Center”) last weekend and picked up this very model out of curiosity. It’s been hanging on their wall for well over a year. Unfortunately, I was unable to play it - nor would anyone else be able to do so - because between the neck having a back bow and the bridge saddles being down on the deck, it did nothing but rattle its strings against the frets. It made me question Yamaha’s QC of course, but the real question is how any retailer could hang up an instrument in such tragic condition and expect people to buy it. Of course they’ll do a set up - for a fee. 15 minutes on the bench and it could have been put in playable condition. Until then, people will pick it up, realize it does not play, and move on. Very unfortunate.
Well, it is a $199 bass... Still, your point rings true: if the damn thing can't even be played, why put it on display? FWIW, the higher-end Yammies have better QC (as you'd hope). My BB735a just needed a nut file (fretting at the first fret was really hard) and a couple preference tweaks.
Out at a Guitar Center I went to, they had a Matsumoku P Bass copy for sale. Neck was just as bowed if not worse than that. I told one of the guys working there and he said, and I quote, "We only set things up when a customer purchases them." I couldn't believe him, no one would be buying it with a neck like a damn banana.
I've seen many a bass that needs the truss rod adjusted after it's new. I've had Yamaha's Epiphones, and Tobias's that needed the same truss adjustment and I know for a fact the necks were OK the day they were new. I think they settle in after a year or so.
Your setup videos are great, but I really look forward to your repair videos...especially acoustic guitars. Saddle shaves and neck resets blow my mind. Keep up the excellent work!
My Yamaha TRBX 204 can set up a bit high on the strings but the frets are smooth and not sharp. Had the preamp go out after almost 2 years. Had it fixed for $60 with newer pre amp and had strings adjusted. A killer bass.
A lot of stores will not even do a truss rod adjustment. As for full setups, I have never seen a store do one for free. That costs extra. Often they won't even mention that they even offer that service. Often they just sell it and that is that.
Dave, It sure is disappointing when you see an instrument with sharp fret ends. I don’t know why shops that have setup guys don’t take the time to dress the frets. I personally would not put anything on the sales floor that wasn’t squared away. Good shops take the time to set up instruments correctly. Thanks for showing us what some “slackers” try to get away with.
I just set-up one of these. The fret ends were fine but I needed to take a lot of material off the nut slots to get the strings anywhere near the first fret. FWIW, sh

I have the predecessor to that Bass, mine is the RBX260. It's a pretty decent instrument for a beginner, but mine had the same issues with frets as that one. It's a problem on a lot of guitars these days. Supply of good, dry, old wood have vanished. Everyone has to use much greener wood these days. You can build it perfect but by the time it gets half way around the world, sits in a warehouse and then a store for god knows how long, the wood shrinks and the frets stick out. No big deal, dress them and it's good to go.
Yamaha's Indonesian made instruments always seem to have some small problem with them, their pianos out of Indonesia have some badly made sections (mostly internally, some small cabinetry things but they're far less important). Their guitars have similar problems
Chris Wareham As someone with a smidgeon of Yamaha knowledge, I've noticed their Indonesian made instruments (not just guitars) often have a couple of smaller often superficial QC issues/defects
Small cosmetic imperfections are ok for Indonesian guitars and basses I have a few ,but if you can skip on these, besides that the instruments are real bang for the buck and play and sound great.
Alan Bean Maybe your truss rod is too tight, or frets aren't properly leveled, no big deal to have it fixed. Mine is now fretless, but It had a cool and clean slap sound when it had frets.
Yamaha TRBX174 was my first brand new bass (black), great bass, perfect set up, even the KB player in the band thought it looks very expensive, I think it has great out look. It's nut slot is perfect. The weak point is the low-end is not strong. AND!!! trbx174 "EW" is a different story anyway, crap set up, neck joint problem which can't be fixed causes the action so foking high, and dirty strings. nut slot is not even in the right place!!! more expensive version. with so many problem, and they both sound exactly the same!!! After all, Trbx174 is a great starter, budget, back up bass. but Trbx174"EW" is a piece of crap. Don't buy "EW" for God sake.
I just love how straightforward this guy is. No nonsense stuff. Bravo!

name models bass?
Yamaha TRBX 174. $180 on Sweetwater, I’ve had mine a year and a half and love it
Isn't that like high wires for circus performers??😜🤪😝
At 4:35 ... play some Korn!
SHADOWBEAR82763 lol
😊
What measurement were you using when setting the pickup height? I couldn't tell...thanks!
Hey Dave, what were the pickup heights??? Thanks...
What distance for pickup height? can you tell us?
Bass Guitar.
Is there really going to be a jailbreak tonight ?? :-)
Somewhere in town. I suspect it'll be at the jailhouse. Not sure why.
Sharp fret ends? Sad to see that even Yammy geetars can come from the factory with flaws these days.
Chris Wareham As someone with a smidgeon of Yamaha knowledge, I've noticed their Indonesian made instruments (not just guitars) often have a couple of smaller often superficial QC issues/defects
Small cosmetic imperfections are ok for Indonesian guitars and basses I have a few ,but if you can skip on these, besides that the instruments are real bang for the buck and play and sound great.
should i go to a store and get this repaired? i don't have the equipment.
hi Dave, i would love to send my bass to you fora setup, but the cost is prohibitive.
First Ha! lol
My old man has one of these, thanks Dave!
Yiu adjust the neck relief snd string height eith ther bass not tuned to pitch. You don't describe anything about pickup height. Pretty bad.
You played jailbreak...lol
Can anybody else slap with this bass?, get an insane amount of fret noise on mine :(
I can slap without fret noise with this bass. You could try rising the strings slightly
The problem is that the E and A strings are already at 4 milimiters at the 12th fret and I STILL get fret noise... I don't know what to do
Alan Bean Maybe your truss rod is too tight, or frets aren't properly leveled, no big deal to have it fixed. Mine is now fretless, but It had a cool and clean slap sound when it had frets.
Yamaha TRBX174 was my first brand new bass (black), great bass, perfect set up,
even the KB player in the band thought it looks very expensive, I think it has great out look.
It's nut slot is perfect.
The weak point is the low-end is not strong.
AND!!! trbx174 "EW" is a different story anyway, crap set up, neck joint problem which can't be fixed causes the action so foking high,
and dirty strings. nut slot is not even in the right place!!! more expensive version. with so many problem, and they both sound exactly the same!!!
After all, Trbx174 is a great starter, budget, back up bass. but Trbx174"EW" is a piece of crap. Don't buy "EW" for God sake.
Ewwwww 😆
Waw
A "C(unt)" Hair too low?
Is C hair a metric measurement? Lol
Made in Indonesia
This is really a horribly set up bass and this all should have been corrected and adjusted by the shop
