I was 45 when I started meditating. A lifetime of ADHD symptoms were gone in 4-5 months. No more meds. I'm 53 now, and if I don't sit for about 3 weeks, all the symptoms of anxiety, forgetfulness and hazy consciousness start coming back.

This is a common misconception of mindfulness (I'm a cognition and mindfulness researcher).
In fact, mindfulness is NOT about switching your mind off. Instead, it is about observing and noticing the contents of your mind, accepting them and labeling or categorizing them as thinking, and then returning attention to the present moment (often helpfully linked to the breath, which is always present). In short, mindfulness is not the absence of thought or emotion, but rather these observance of these things within ourselves. Noticing/observing thoughts and emotions is mindfulness, whereas getting caught up in them is distraction. So mindfulness is a bit more nuanced than what you outlined, though your intuition about being present in the moment is right on the money :)

@Kirsty, meditation does NOT train the mind to switch off, if your mind switched off you would die! I meditate daily. Meditation, depending on the type you do, trains you to control your mind and have complete control over your thinking process.
Even as the guy that is talking about meditation in this video does NOT actually understand what meditation is. Meditation is a tool used to understand GOD, GOD is in your heart (that is where the Kingdom of Heaven/light is centered there), the more you meditate, the more you connect with Yahweh the LORD and His beloved son Jesus Christ the LORD. Meditation is about uplifting your thoughts and NOT about watching them, watching your thoughts is just rubbish, NOT meditation - meditation is about building up your mind through right thinking and watching your thoughts does NOT build up your mind at all because you are just observing the rubbish clutter that is already in your head.

    My experience.
As a beginner, all I did was start with 15 minutes of meditation twice a day, I didn't know that's all it's going to take to start showing results in just about a couple months. It's funny how the point is to not even do it for the result, but the process itself. Once you do it right, it will take care of everything around you as well.
For people who are confused, just sit with your back straight, close your eyes and lightly focus on your breath(this works because the breath is just there, has no meaning or feelings to it). You can try focusing on the triangle area below your nose, focusing on your breath going in and out or your stomach contracting and expanding due to the same. Let the thoughts come, and go. If you find yourself stuck in a story or deep thought, gently remind yourself about it and bring your attention back to your breath. Slowly you will get better at doing this. Initially you might feel some frustration or irritation about it all, but just get through the initial phase and you will be fine.
Last week I experienced weightlessness, almost as if I can't feel my body at all, but my mind is completely active. It was scary yet profound.

Meditation will blow your mind! It will bring more calm, ease, and creative spark/intuition to your life. If it seems hard to quiet your mind, don't worry, just allow your mind to be noisy. Try to watch without judgement or control, but don't think of it as effort or struggle. The point is to let it be, whatever it is. And don't worry about sitting in a lotus position or anything like that. Just be comfortable. If you fall asleep, that just means your body needs more rest so that's OK too.

Now if I’m busy I do 10 minutes about 5 times a day when I can find time and if I don’t there is a noticeable difference. On an ideal day I do 20-10-20. And if I have a day off I’ll just set a stop watch and sit until I’m ready to get up which is typically 25-45 minutes. There’s something psychological about not setting a specific time but just sitting until you feel reenergized and content that allows you to sit longer, even if it’s once a week, that makes increasing your daily sitting meditations easier.

@@lsmith3942 I started with guided meditations by Andy puddicomb (idk if I spelled that correctly lol) but he’s the founder of what is headspace now. I no longer do guided meditations and it’s my opinion that meditation is more beneficial without guided, but it took me 2.5 years to get off of guided meditations and have enough attention span to sit in meditation without guided. I probably could have done it earlier if I wanted but I was comfortable with it and didn’t know much about meditation so I stuck with guided meditations for a while. Nowadays I just sit in silence, set a timer for about 15-20 (maybe longer if I’m not busy or if I wake up early enough) and I establish an anchor point for my attention. Some peoples anchor is the breath, some the body, some the sense of I AM. I began with the breath, and anytime your attention drifts, recognize the thought and gently bring it back to your anchor. Its actually not too complicated. Feel free to ask any other questions

    @justinumberger5314 Год назад +53

I always had a hard time with any of this because the first steps are: sit up straight, hands on your knees, both feet on ground, yada yada. I was so worried about doing it right and exactly how I was instructed that I wasn't able to ever relax or anything. Through trying many different activities/meditation practices the best way for me to get to this state of mindfulness is by getting comfortable in any way possible for you. Then doing something that will trigger your mind to throw a flag. One example, sitting or laying down in any way that is sustainable for 5+ minutes. Then tell yourself that you cannot move. You will almost immediately hear/feel the pushback from your brain and in that moment you will know that you are out of your head. You will feel sensations on your skin telling you to scratch, rub, move, and this is all your brain going crazy. But the beauty of it, you get to decide who is in charge. Other ways that I found achieve the same thing and shift my presence into the actual moment is, holding my breath and having my brain tell me that I need to breath. Also, while running/lifting weight and my brain telling me to slow down or that I am tired and I get to fight back and say, "yea but I got more in me". Honestly, as I'm writing this I do find it ironic that pain/discomfort in the present will allow you to escape the pain/discomfort in the past. All while also allowing you another chance to conquer the pain/discomfort and ultimately reshape your mind/perception of yourself and your capabilities. This might be too long for anyone to want to read but ended up being a seemly big breakthrough for me haha. Good Job, Justin!

So, I am somewhat of an experience meditator. And yet, I can never concentrate on third eye center. My attention naturally goes to my breathing, the nose area. I am not complaining. • @Chase_Istre
      @Chase_Istre Год назад +19

@@awakenedtarot7306 Do not mystify the “third eye” because it can bring confusion and misunderstanding. In traditional philosophy the third eye isn’t a mystical eye of other realms but simply the eye of wisdom. You began to see life with wisdom instead of discrimination, ego, greed or ignorance. It is said in the Gita, Krishna says to focus on that point and in traditional yogi practices, yogis do so. But do not misunderstand. It is a purifying practice rather than a “spiritual entertainment bargain” as I see most people out stigma around it is.
BG 5.27-28: Shutting out all thoughts of external enjoyment, with the gaze fixed on the space between the eye-brows, equalizing the flow of the incoming and outgoing breath in the nostrils, and thus controlling the senses, mind, and intellect, the sage who becomes free from desire and fear, always lives in freedom.
“All yogic practices, including Raja (meditation), Karma (good actions), Bhakti (devotion), and Jnana (knowledge)- comes from Hindu philosophy, and in this paragraph, comes from the Bhagavad Gita spoken by Krishna. I say that so we know what I’m saying isn’t ideologized or my own opinion, it’s from the very source of what you strive to know.
When the yogi meditates more deeply, he finds his mind automatically concentrated at the one point of the spiritual eye, in ecstasy with the Absolute/Infinite. “(Paramanhamsa Yogananda)
And he goes on to say -
“As the devotee progresses in meditation from restless consciousness to cosmic consciousness, his conscious and subconscious thoughts may materialize in his inner vision, weaving figures of light, like those seen in movies, both real and unreal-materializations of the will and life energy. Beware, young devotee, of these fairies of the world of life energy. Be not satisfied with anything less than Spirit and the bliss of Spirit. Pay no attention to variations of the inner light, but practice concentration on the light of the spiritual eye. The light of the eye must be used only to look for God, the One whose presence is hidden on the throne of light. (bg p.612)”
      -
So it’s a very orthodox spiritual practice meant for those on the path of yogic practice. Yogananda indeed was a Kriya yogi. Another great story is of when Ramakrishna met Trailanga swami and Ramakrishna was told to focus “here” as Trailanga grabbed a glass shard and cut in between his brows. The great saint Ramakrishna fell into Samadhi (A state of bliss where all outward consciousness dissolves into the one reality/the Atman) for three days. Trailanga said “What I worked 50 years to achieve you did in three days!” And they both become disciples of eachother. I recommend the documentaries of Ramakrishna and the old film on YT portraying him.
I say that to point towards the third eye isn’t some spiritual realm seeing, but it a very sanctifying spot to purify oneself, and I myself have practiced the yogic gaze of the atman.
But anyways, it is a yogic practice and a metaphorical reference as the eye of wisdom which just simply means seeing with wisdom rather than ignorance. Blessings. Stick to a orthodox meditative practice as the goal is liberation from suffering, which is purity, and nothing else. Amituofo🙏🏼😁

He seems to over index on the fact that third eye meditation is supposedly focusing on the "organ that can't feel", the brain. That's not my experience at all. If you focus on the third eye, most people definitely feel a physical sensation between the eyebrows that is no different from a physical sensation anywhere else in the body. It's not special because that particular patch of skin and bone is closer to the brain. You are not somehow touching emptiness more effectively simply because you're stitching the brow. I've meditated every day this year so far, both morning and night. It was a regular (but not constant) practice for the last 4.5 years. I've gone stretches of 2 months consistent and then scaled back. Now, I'm integrating it into every day to experiment and see what amazing things I can bring to manifest (and there have been many over the years, and even this year so far). My creativity is off the charts already...

I started sahaja yoga meditation in 2012. It works in the mechanism of unlocking the energy system which underpins our central nervous system and parasympathetic. I experienced very deep states of silence and felt the energy of kundalini rejuvenating my brain cells. Many times I went out of meditation looking 10 yrs younger, my cognitive and learning abilities advanced to the point I started writing algorithms and gain a master's in data science although my first degree was not technical.
I am 48 and i keep learning and innovating in the pace that I had in my youth certainly higher than more than peers. To me, this is only because of Sahaja yoga. Shri Mataji, who invented the technique of Sahaja yoga have to humans the ultimate tool of self-development, brain development, and consciousness. She empowered humans to reach their true potential beyond our imagination and opened horizons which are unimaginable to humanity till now.
There are many problems in the world but practicing sahaja yoga gives us access to profound solutions to our individual and collective problems

I think part of the issue is that mindfulness practice isn't necessarily the same for everyone. Some people experience similar benefits from ongoing immersion in a meaningful task, for example sports or music or writing (or whatever works for you really). So mindfulness isn't a cure all nor is it right for everyone.
With that said, I agree with your sentiment that it should at least be offered in schools to young children - there is a wealth of evidence to show the benefits to children and adults alike in improved cognition such as memory, attention, and emotional self regulation and socio-emotional functioning (e.g. anxiety, depression, stress, burnout, etc.)

Mediation is so great. There are so many ways to meditate. I discovered a very 'natural' approach that I enjoy. Instead of having a 'goal' with visualization of a super being or light, or counting breaths, etc. I give myself permission to 'visit myself of the past'. It typically involves my earlier life. I'll revisit a room from my first house where I grew up. It then becomes a particular time of day and year, etc. You will be amazed at what you remember both visually and emotionally. Everything comes into sharp detail like the the light switch, the door handles, the carpeting, the sounds, your family outside the room, etc. Do not judge it. Just see 'you' as you used to be. You will not only learn a lot, you will begin to develop more compassion for yourself and those around you.

I also healedsome early life traumas I suppose by visualizing peoplein my life I couldn't or wouldn't 'forgive'... forgiving sets us free not so much for the other perosns but for ourselves. To free our minds and also our physical health. You cna stop ruminaitng too and free up your thoughts for more positive thoughts about your awesome future which is the best revenge anyhow -) I don't meditate as much as I used to. This makes me think I should daily again. I prefered the method of visualization. One of my favs was floating places in a bubble. Sometimes meeting up with people who hurt me and were abusive. Making peace with the past. Its great therapy! Thanks.

It clears my thoughts and I am insanely productive. With the highest self esteem of my life. And I’ve always struggled with anxiety and depression. Tremendously.
I lay down for 15 minutes everyday But my meditation is that I visualize different things to clear my being.
I visualize all the negativity like gray smoke and minus signs being pushed out from from my body and replaced with white positive sparkle smoke
Then I imagine roots like a tree growing from me and going deep down into the cord of the earth and the earth gives me the centered energy that I need. I imagine pink smoke around me and feel it’s warm and love. I’ll imagine tiny hearts all around me and in me giving me love and support. I have often been a nervous wreck so I’ll imagine all my cells in my body shaking so fast and I will calm them visually get them to slow down calm down.
I’ve had problems with my hair falling out and I visualized it growing in thick and long. And sure enough it grew back. Our brains are so powerful. We are so powerful.
    I hope this helps someone.
If I ever stop doing meditation this way in days I am back to the person who can barely function because of depression and anxiety
It takes about 3 days before I am feeling better and I know by a week I am much better.
Sometimes I’ll notice I’m slipping and freaking out. So I know what to do - meditation and I keep telling myself it’s okay in 3 days you’ll start to feel better.
I’ve taken all the dru-gs and I don’t feel better just drugged. But this is the only thing that helped

If there is god it has to be pure consciousness. where do you find pure consciousness? in all living beings where it is active, (sagun) state of god. hence god is in every creature. and in potential (nirgun) state god is everywhere as everything. it simple logic. but most don't understand it unless they understand Nonduality (oneness)/Advaita Vedanta philosophy the most important, fundamental philosophy of Hinduism.

Nope correct your facts. Hinduism is not a religion. The rishis and sadhus who found the deep insights about our conciousness gave this knowledge freely to the world. The only reason the misinformation of Yoga, meditation, and mantras are from Hindu religion is because it originates from ancient India. The mughal invaders gave people of India the same Sindhu but pronounced is as Hindu and that's how we got the name. Most of us who believe in Krishna, Shiva, and Shakti are spirituals. You can call it Sanatana Dharma but truly we are free to worship any energy of the cosmos.

In my opinion prefrontal cortex is better to focus on, as it is one way to just be with my thoughts, observe them and try to manage to be at peace. The reason for every day, is because by that way you form a habit. here is the full episode of Andrew's podcast (ruclips.net/video/wTBSGgbIvsY/видео.html&ab_channel=AndrewHuberman)

Meditation is to return back to your natural/instinctive state of consciousness where there is no effort, in natural state there is no activity not even watching because it is activity but there is automatic mode of watching that's it that is meditativeness. there is only pure consciousness which can only be felt, experienced not understood. if you understood it then you weren't meditating. you can understand it before or after meditation.

I know this is a short cut but I have never achieved a really deep meditation sober before, I have achieved, what I imagine it feels like, on a really high doses of shrooms though 5 grams and up and its unbelievable. Not even a minute into the breathing my mind quiets and my thoughts become ever quieter, it's like I can bearly hear them in the distance. Which is so insane to me, to barley hear my own thoughts far away, like it's someone talking down the road. The longer it goes on the more I lose my sense of self. On top of that it's not just blackness with my eyes closed, it's beautiful kaleidoscopic, mandalas infinitely unfolding and folding in on themselves. It's so good. Thinking about it as I type this makes me want to experience it again lol.
Would like to get the discipline to meditate sober though because I don't do shrooms often at all. Started yesterday along with starting a workout regime again. Hope to be constant.

I am glad you are bringing this up. Very rarely do I hear about practising all-inclusive meditation. Rather than directing attention to a part of the body, or brain etc. sitting quietly without choosing and putting one's attention on anything is way closer to meditation than practising interception. I get it why people may want to start feeling their feet, or their belly, or their breathing but slowly we need to broaden our attention to include all that arises inside and outside. That will make us more conscious in my opinion and will stay that way when we open our eyes. If there is no progress during the day, outside of sitting during meditation hours, I believe the meditation has not happened yet. The alertness and feeling of love are huge if meditation is truly working... Everything outside becomes louder, brighter, smells more etc.etc. All senses become more active. That psychedelic experience is so enjoyable that keeps us in the present moment. Otherwise staying in the present moment is boring for most people because our senses are sleepy. Anyways, this is my 5p after 20 years of meditation. Still investigating and exploring...
