    Thanks for the shout-out, Matt! I'm glad you enjoyed switching it up. I've seen time-based intervals done in cycling and also gotten workout ideas from Couch to 5k, which is all based on time. I ran a 5k race on Tuesday evening this past week and my 4 x 5 minute workout pace the week before was a very good predictor, within a second per mile actually. But it was 97°🥵at the start of the race so I could possibly trim that a bit in friendlier conditions. I had a light track workout on Thursday morning, first time in a while for that, and 14 miles Saturday for a total of 42 miles. It felt like a pretty big week for me. It looks like yours went really well too, staying consistent and packing in the miles even in your light week. Good job!

      Sorry for the late reply! I replied earlier but I guess it didn’t save it. 🤷🏻‍♂️
      42 miles is definitely a big week! Nice going! It’s good to hear your 5 minute intervals were a good predictor of your 5k race pace. Oh, and I definitely agree that time-trimming is probable in temps less than 97f! 🤣That’s very warm and for sure inhibits optimum performance!

    Great video!! I agree that it is hard to determine someones gait just on the wear on the shoe. I occasionally do gait analysis in the clinic and it helps to see the runner especially in slo mo. I have also put a lot of miles on my Pegasus 38. I have about 950 miles in them. Based on the wear on the shoe. I contact my heel more on the left more than the right. This past week was good with 40 miles with a 5.5 mile tempo run and speed work at the end of the week with ladder work. (400, 800, 2 mile repeats, 800 and 400) This Saturday I'm going to attempt to break 20 minutes in the 5K. Thanks for sharing.

    Good video Matt and reminder about checking shoe wear patterns. I’m down near you in South Florida (other Coast near Miami).
    Happy to report working way back from achilles injury - worked back to 20 miles a week for few weeks and gradually adding more with some x training on the bike. Injury was good downtime to refocus and to learn how to stretch and roll out properly to stay loose.
    Happy running !!

I have always looked at the bottom of my shoes to try and analyze the wear but only did it to make sure the wear pattern matched. Thought it might be an early warning sign I had some alignment issues with my frame and needed some chiropractic work.

I have to mention I'm 58 years old. 28th overall and 3rd age group 50-59. 10k splits 4'33", 4'35", 4'35", 4'31 last 2.55km 4'31" My coros says 42.55km, Garmin says 42.56km. Oh and i ran in marino gloves which i had never done and it was windy in Wellington. Shoe wear: outside middle of heal and outside forefoot but seems closer to arch end rather than forward of toe end. I'm no gazelle. Actually checked my nike tempos and it is right at the airpods on outer forefoot wear. I think because I run on undulating hills I tend to break on the hills a little on the heals. Setback: bad case of DOMS. Keep or throw: Horder and use in garden and walking about. Hmmm.. forgotten if you had anymore questions.

    I put shoe goo or high temperature hot melt glue on the outer heels as if I don’t I can feel the foot leaning towards the wear and I want to keep my foot level.
    I drink 1/2 liter of hydration per 15 minutes of running in the desert heat otherwise I lose too much water weight which comes from the blood. But I am a big sweater which may explain how I can run at 115 degrees here in the Southern Nevada desert. I use insulated bottles with ice cubes so each drink is ice cold. Also I soak my t-shirt which helps cool me but it dries after about a mile in the dry desert heat. This trick would not work in Florida! The wet t-shirt eases my transition to sweating without feeling I am running in an oven at the start. When wet, my skin feels like the temperature is 60 degrees not the 110 degrees it really is because the dew point is often below freezing here most days.

    • @dougcsmith
      @dougcsmith 2 года назад +1

      I weigh myself before and after a run to determine how much water I need to drink. One oz per minute is what I lose at 110 degrees! But I don’t get as soaked as I would in Florida. The lack of being soaked can cover up the need to drink and some runners can end up with dehydration.

      @@dougcsmith Your climate is so remarkably different! It's hard for me to imagine going out for a run and actually drying out. I'm soaked after a mile! You do well to weigh yourself and it seems it is a fairly important thing to do; you could get into some trouble if you dont drink enough!

    Great video, you always pick interesting topics to discuss! As a slow runner I notice most wear in the lateral forefoot, which is odd to me because I “feel” like I’m landing flat mid foot. But feels can be deceiving. I don’t do anything about it, it is what it is right? Shoes get us going, is all we care :) on a separate note, would you consider a vlog on how you plan workouts between distance based and time based?

    • @its_Matt_B_
      @its_Matt_B_  2 года назад +1

      A little wear in your lateral forefoot is normal for a neutral runner. If it’s a lot of wear, you may benefit from a motion control shoe. What’s the difference between a little and a lot? 🤷🏻‍♂️ I’d guess about this much 🤏🏽.

    I only have two pairs of running shoes, both Hoka. I don't know anything bout brands but I know I tried four in one month and ended up returning all of them because the heel counter tends to be too tall and stiff hurting my akhiles on every stride until I was kicked out of the game for three months. So tge only ones that work are Hoka gaviota or Clinton's because tge counter is very flexible. In regards to pronation I tend to do what you described here as superpronatiob I think. Thanks for this video. I'm off to check my old pair of trainers now. I don't think I've been running for long enough to qualify as a trainer hoarder yet, but I do have every pair I've bought since I started running a couple of years ago 😅
    I have to ask, how long did it take you to get to the point of running 100km in a working week? My current MONTHLY target is 100km, and even then I struggle to fit it all in (I do manage it but I couldn't imagine ever being able to in the space of a week) I'll definitely be watching more of your videos to learn more from you 🤗

    • @its_Matt_B_
      @its_Matt_B_  2 года назад +1

      I use the term “hoarder” very lightly. I’d say that our trainers are sort of like trophies so it’s no wonder we want to hold onto them. With that said, I tend not to keep my real trophies (medals), so I tend not to keep my old trainers.
      Running 100k in a work-week can be a bit of a stretch, but sometimes it just works out. There are going to be times when life gets in the way and we can’t run as much as we’d like to. That’s perfectly fine. The goal is to be consistent over the long term.
      I think running 100k in a month is a great goal, and I wouldn’t try to raise that number too quickly, or even at all. 100k per month is a big distance, and if you’re feeling good, leave it where it is. You’ll be able to get in more distance when you’re training for a specific event. I’ve been running for about 16 years and I’ve run about 60 races at the marathon distance or longer. This isn’t to brag, but rather to say that everyone is on their own journey and has different goals. 👊🏽
      Keep up the great running!
