- Camera brand choice is a personal thing, and everyone has their own unique reasons for making the choices that they do. Early in 2014 I was starting to encounter faults with my now aging Canon 5D (the original 5D by the way), so I took a look around the market to see what my options were. This video outlines why I made the choice that I did.

I've been using Olympus since the 1970s. I shot weddings with them all over England and the printers at the lab were impressed by the results, telling me that my shots were the best in quality and sharpness. Olympus is unique. I have used other brands but I have been disappointed with the results.
Inspiring for us amateurs to see pros espousing the virtues of Olympus gear.
At the end of the day Craig it is a personal choice, and we all have our own reasons for choosing the gear that we use. None of those reasons are right or wrong - they are personal to the individual. Thank you so much for watching, and I hope that it was useful for you.
I have recently switched to Olympus because I got an E-M1 II for 395€ and the 12-40 2.8 for 450€. This is a pro level, weather sealed, 4k capable, ergonomic, compact, well performing kit for the price of a new entry level body. I came from a D3300 and before that I shot a lot of film the past few years. What can I say? All the smart features and tricks packed into this camera make life so much easier, I love it! The image quality is not better or worse than the old APS-C sensor I am used to, but lenses are smaller, better and still affordable!
I’ve had an E-M1iii for a long time now, and there was a time when an E-M5ii was my principal video camera. Both are very capable cameras, and very useable in the landscape with their weather sealing etc. Also, the OM-D system has been around for a while now so there are good condition second hand lenses (and cameras) out there that make the system even more affordable.
Although I admit to being an Olympus Fanboy (My first camera was an OM1, purchased in the early 80's). I firmly believe that the cutting edge features that Olympus has introduced have never been promoted enough. Pro-capture, Time Composite, etc. allow rank armatures like myself to become more creative and to try things like BIF or Light trails, without having to spend lots of time acquiring a particular skill.
Yeah, I completely agree, and to be honest I am still finding functions and features that are proving to be useful to me. Really hoping that the new owners continue to innovate with the system in their new released. Will be very interesting to see what happens with the brand over the next year or so.
Hi Huw: I really like your candid explanation regarding your history with Olympus. I have a very soft spot in my camera heart for Olympus as this was my first digital camera in 2001, and I have owned the E500, E510, E30, OMD M5 Mark ii, OMD M10 Mark ii, OMD M1 Mark ii. The weather sealing on Olympus cameras is second-to-none. That being said, I no longer shot Olympus and have moved over to Sony and currently have the A7iii and most recently the A7Riv. My primary reason is I really like full frame camera and I like the low-noise capability and higher dynamic range that these Sony camera offer. At no time do I ever regret buying any of my Olympus camera. I suffer from extreme G.A.S. (Gear Acquisition Syndrome), and photography is my only vice in life so I like to treat myself. Cheers, Keith

I also started my Olympus journey with the E-M5 Mk2 and 12-50mm lens. Great combination. Am now using the E-M1 (Mk1) with Lumix 12-35mm f2.8 and Lumix 45-150mm. Quality for landscape work is exceptional. Agreed with your analysis 100%. Have 'Liked' and Subscribed. Gear choice is a personal thing and we all have our own reasons and preferences for choosing what we use. If we all had deep and limitless pockets then we'd all be using pro lenses and top of the line camera bodies - but reality isn't like that. I will be doing another video soon about some of the limitations that I've found with the Olympus system and what I've done to work around them. No system is 100% perfect after all. All the best.
I started off with the first pro E-M1 due to the fact that I could still use my four-thirds lenses. I love the Art Filter Bracket + RAW. Also, the camera includes HDR, which was a hassle for me before with the Olympus 4/3 DSLRs.
With you 100% on OMDS. I've come to photography from the perspective of hiking/mountaineering. Light weight wins every time, even down to leaving the tripod and nd filters behind. The M. Zuiko 12-100 lens does me dandy for 95% of my landscape photography. I'll have to look you up next time I'm in your neck of the woods!
Thank you Mike. For a hike or one of those long recce walks, the OMD system is superb. I’ve recently picked up a Sigma full frame system which is very similar in weight but without the focal length range. One day I need to go out and compare whether the Sigma focal reach really IS a limitation or not. Regardless, the OMD system is staying with me ‘cos it is just so damned useful.
I am now imagining you with a camera bag with one small camera and lens, a drink, a sandwich and some Liquorice Allsorts.

I purchased an L-Plate for my E-M1 Mk II similar to yours and it would not hold the camera steady no matter how hard the screw was tightened. So I epoxy bedded it. Thin, stretch cellophane (Saran Wrap) was taped to the bottom of the camera to prevent sticking. After rough sanding the L-Frame's interior, steel epoxy was judiciously distributed in its bed, avoiding the screw area, and prior to set, the camera was installed with the screw (greased to prevent sticking). After hardening and removing the camera and Saran Wrap, the L-Frame and camera now mate perfectly, even the camera's serial number can be seen in the impression. Oh, and I cut a notch (with a Dremel) where the battery door hits the frame so it would open further.
I agree with you 100%. I changed to Olympus from Cannon full frames one year ago. I really wish I would’ve considered it much earlier. But being a “full frame snob” it was out of the question until I saw one when I was on vacation in Vienna Austria in a photography store. When I got back from vacation to the states I started researching photos online then I rented one. I sold all of my Canon gear and when exclusively to Olympus. I have the Olympus 12 to 40 mm 2.8 and the Lumix 35 to 100 2.8 (which I can carry in my cargo pants pocket!). Yes size isn’t everything but like you indicated I can’t tell the difference. I love the system.

@@huwalban There is no perfect system when there are so many things to consider: Size, weight, cost, etc. I always say that my compact car is perfect--until I have to bring home a stack of lumber or bricks. My friend's truck is perfect until he has to put gas in it. Like you said--there are bound to be a frustrating thing about any system--you just know it's limitations and work around it.

Interesting. I started my MFT journey with Panasonic (G1, then G3, then some others) but moved to Olympus (E-M10 initially, then E-M1 and E-P5) for what I perceived to be better build / "solid feel in the hand" and IBIS. The range of lenses available for MFT is pretty amazing.
I never seemed to get on with the Olympus film cameras such as the OM 1 and 2, and stuck with my Canon / and Hassels for weddings, general industrial and commercial work during the 1970s.
In 2003 I retired as a professional and sold all my Canon film equipment and bought a Canon 20d digital camera, which was an enormous disapointment. I then bought an Olympus E- 1 and although low on pixels and low light performance, still proved a joy to use and ensured that I stayed with Olympus albeit as a keen amateur and brand enthusiast.
I was brought up on an Olympus OM10 film camera, and used magazines to learn how to use it effectively. Feels weird sometimes to have gone full circle and back to the brand.
I waited a long time to switch to digital, first Panasonic with the G2 12MP, then I switched to Olympus with the EM5ii. The main features for me were the IBIS, high definition mode, focus bracketing and the "feel" in the hand. (I still have a Lumix GX80 rangefinder which I use for a street/travel camera) I've since "upgraded" to the EM1ii just for the better balance with the PRO lenses. I also have a Sony A7ii but I'm going to be selling it off as I haven't used it in over a year... Mirrorless shooting reminds me of the jump from old MS-DOS word processors to Windows word processing. The DOS programs tried to imitate a page, but the graphical Windowed version was like seeing the real thing. Same with using an EVF compared to an optical VF - you see what you will get - that is a game changer. And I'd never go back to a non-articulated rear screen either, no more wet knees and sore backs trying to peer through a low-level viewfinder on a tripod. Of course, many modern FF cameras have those features now too, but Olympus had them first and they still have the weight/size advantage.
I was also using Canon APS-C DSLR gear. When I went mirrorless I went with a Nikon Z7. Paired with a Z 24-120 f/4 you are within 100 grams of a OM-1 with a 12-100 Pro. A little less range, but higher IQ, more dynamic range etc. Going full frame let's me get away without having to bracket exposures in so many situations where I used to have to. The Z 14-30 ultrawide is small and light as well. I really like the system.
It's strange that so few channels review the Olympus vs the z7/z8,
The features on my em1-2 only exist on the z8. But I'm struggling to see the advantage of the z8. The in body stabilization on the m4/3 allowes for incredible shots even in total darkness.
Okay, now I subscribe you, sir.. because your experiences with Olympus are interest me and your concern on landscape photography. The quality, size and practice use are stil their concern to still alive on competition agains other sensor size. By the way, until now I using PEN E-P5 after some years ago using E-PL8 for street, cityscape & travelling, I'm so enjoying them. My upgrade plan perhaps to E-M5 II or E-M1 origin (mark1). I don't know how they did it, but they have rare quality (escpecially in lens of 12-50mm & 40-150mm which I have) which realy exceed my expectation. Uniquely, their new standard kit lens, 14-45mm EZ pancake was so sharp and free chromatic aberration.

I hope to pickup an E-M1 before long. The original is starting to dip below $300. That's a hell of a lot of camera for 300 clams. I still have an Olympus 25mm f/1.8. I look at shots taken a few back with that on an E-P3 and the colors are just fantastic.
The E-M1 is a super camera. I currently have the E-M1iii in my possession which I actually picked up as a second hand purchase on eBay. I've used the original E-M1, however if you are into doing long exposures please be warned that the resultant image will be quite grainy. I can't remember the reason why, but it was fixed in the mkii variant, and didn't happen on the original E-M5. Just something to be aware of. Thanks for the comment and for the support of my channel. First camera was a Kodak. In college, went to Canon (FT). Mamiya twin lens and the RB 67 studio work. Canon F1. and Pentax MX. a friend had an OM1. Used it, loved it. Sold the F1 put the Pentax away. Then came the OM 4. Lovely tool, lousy weather sealing. Trashed it bought an OM 4t, much better (still have it). Moved to digital, OMD 1 mk 2 and Pen f. Love them to this day. Maybe looking to buy a OMDS OM 1 after the new wears off. Adopt old film lenses and use only two Zuiko zoom lenses. Oh! TG 6 too. Odd bit that. It goes everywhere in my pocket + the auxiliary tele lens. It has built in zoom very tough and water proof. Works underwater but I just use it in the rain and snow. About it.
Split between the om-d M1 mkiii and a Fuji sx10. Brilliant points as to why the Olympus would be a great choice.
MY suggestion to you sir, if you can, is to find a show or camera shop where you can pick the things up and have a play. If you still cannot decide, then see if you could hire each for a day or two to have a longer play in front of your chosen subject. System choice is a big deal, and very individual. Good luck in making your decision.

Ha ha, I can see exactly what you mean. You are right a 5lb spirit level would kind of negate all of the weight saving advantages of the system :) Stay safe and well out there!
I chose the em10 Mkii and have no regrets . My wide angle at 28mm is my phone . For walk about I have a prime and another for portraits . I also have the kit zoom, which in the right hands delivers in good light .
I switched from Pentax and thought I would settle on Fuji, but in the end it was Olympus that bought .
The Canon and Nikon alternatives are too heavy to wear round my neck on trips these days . Don’t get me wrong , they are beautiful cameras that produce stunning images .
I was going to purchase mint used gear , but was offered new from Olympus and added two other lenses that came as gifts , along with the Billingham Digital bag. So, in reality the true cost to me for a really practical set up for my needs was just a steal and I was lucky to have found it at the right time .
GAS had nothing to do with it, but we are all vulnerable to its influence .
Megapixels are not really as important as the manufactures would have us believe . What should matter is using something that delivers when you need it to and for that reason I use the wide angle on my phone for all those occasions my camera is too slow to access when baby sitting the little ones .

Thank you Carmen, Decisions liike this are very personal, and everyone will have their own "challenges" that they will want to try and answer. I have to admit that I was so unsure of my switch to Olympus that I kept my Canon gear and purchased a mid range OM-D and one kit lens and just used that. 8 months later having only used that camera and lens, I was completely confident in the system.

Using the combination that matches our workflow ; Olympus did not disappoint . When you compare the size and ibis to the mix and you soon realise that you need to spend considerably more to match what this little camera brings to the table.
Megapixels have got out of hand and often a new camera requires a new computer to accompany that purchase . Here again; Olympus proves how great the Olympus offering functions beautifully .
In the end, it can be freighting it can be to deviate from popular views and trust on what seems like old technology . If you cannot tell the difference then brighter are others . Producing images that tell their own story and engage with the viewer is true for amateurs as it is for professionals . I do hope others see your piece and try your recommendations for themselves. Your Oly MFT experience was about the same as mine. In 2013 I got that same EM5 MK0, the 12-50mm lens and a very inexpensive Oly tele lens that cost me $99 USD on sale to take on a trip to Africa to try out. My main gear was all Nikon prior to that and I had all that gear along, too. Upon my return to the US and after going through my photos from the trip, I found about half were taken with the Oly gear and that I had many great photos captured with that kit. I ended up replacing two bags of Nikon gear with one bag of Oly MFT gear. Nothing against the Nikon gear, but the compact Oly kit that did the same job beat it for practical reasons. Very happy with MFT and not missing full frame at all.

Any other company that after being sold for over 5 yrs is now regarded one of the best camera making brands ever ? Olympus, they are the king of innovation esp the mirrorless segment
I agree, it is fantastic to see a company on the brink pull itself together with a truly innovative line of products. Whether the new OMD System continues to innovate in the same way remains to be seen. The new OM1 appears to be great for wildlife subjects and maybe motorsports as well, but for the landscaper it is not the leap forward from the E-M1iii that I was hoping. Time will tell though, and for now my E-M1iii is my go to all-round camera and my landscape backup. Thanks for leaving a comment and for supporting the channel
I used to have a FF camera and a suite of f2.8 lenses. I got to the stage where I was reluctant to take the camera with me on outings - it was far too heavy even with just one lens.
About 12 months ago I made the decision to sell the FF and purchase an EM5iii with the 12-45 f4 kit lens. It has been the best decision I have every made with my photography. I can now carry the camera in one hand, put a 60mm macro lens in one pocket and a 40-150mm lens in another pocket. That covers just about any situation I am likely to encounter and NO bags. I can even fit the tiny FL-LM3 flash (supplied with the camera) and an extension cord ($20) in a jacket pocket. You can get some great results with the macro lens and off camera flash (the flash is powered by the camera battery).
BTW, the sale of the FF gear more than paid for the EM5iii and all the lenses mentioned above. I'm a happy chappy!

When I first purchased my original E-M5 and 12-50 kit lens, my bag was just SO light in comparison to my Canon days :) For once I could fit in a snack and a drink without having any compromise. I've tried using one of those Messenger bags for my Olympus gear but I just couldn't make it work for me, hence I went back to my usual backpack. Stay safe and well.
@@huwalban Huw, check out a fly fishing jacket to carry your gear. They have about 20 pockets and will carry all my gear including a small (very) tripod and Nan light for low light photography. Works for me, but not for everyone - they can be a bit fiddly to use in the field. Dunno how they'd go with a long pro zoom lens.

Great video Huw! I'm not an Olympus shooter, I've never actually touched one, but the look and size of the camera body looks similar to my Sony's. - which was a big selling point for me. It has to feel right in hand. Hope you are doi g well and keeping safe over there!

@@huwalban You might consider the Lumix S5, compact and comes with a 20-60mm lens. Ideal for landscapes, and there some good deals + trade-ins in the UK. A great shot is great in any format, but you notice technical shortcomings in the bad ones! I'm happy using m43 and full frame.
@@borderlands6606 Many thanks for the suggestion. The Lumix S1R is also on my hitlist to pick up and have a play with. My only concern is that Panasonic's market share is so small that I question whether they will stick at it and innovate their cameras.

Let's jump 11months ahead, my dudes using full frame 60mp Sigma Fp L Camera & L lenses from Canon.
I'd love to get a fuji / Olympus or some small system but now I'm rocking a Nikon D600 with heaps of dynamic range & a Sigma art 40mm - as sharp as Zeiss Otus, 1% distortion, renders 8k equivalent image quality, almost no Chroma.
Ha ha, all true. However I am using the Olympus and Sigma system side by side and gaining the advantages of both systems in whatever situation I find myself in. Not what I intended, but what has happened quite naturally. What is even better is that judging from the comments I’ve received on the fpL video there are lots of photographers out there that do something similar, i.e. use two systems to get the pictures they want.

@@huwalban I'm very happy with my R5, Huw, and I think I now have the perfect set-up. I just wish they made something like the FujiFilm bodies with all their tactile mechanical dials. You mention you shot F1. I used to shoot motor racing and road tests for various magazines in Australia. Loved it. Did you shoot mainly in the UK, or did you travel with the circus?
@@peterfritzphoto At the time (around 1998) I lived a couple of miles from Silverstone circuit and back then there were lots of test sessions and entrance was FREE! OK, you could only stand on one corner (Luffield) but oh boy what a way to catch some action. I created a testing website, and gradually earned the trust of the circuit to behave myself which then gave me the opportunities to have media access. With media access I could go beyond the debris fence, into the pit lane etc. I dropped the testing website, but then ran two team fan pages for Arrows and Jordan on the UK instance of Rivals.net Unfortunately that folded a couple of years later, but another host called SportNetwork encourage us to move our fan sites onto their platform. Arrows folded in 2002, but I kept going with the Jordan site. When Jordan was sold to Midland Metals in 2005, we switched the page name to continue to follow the team attracting attention from their head of marketing in Canada. It was through that contact that I was offered a consulting contract to work with the team photographing media and test sessions, and also helping to create content for the official Midland F1 Racing website. That association kept going with Spyker in 2006 and ended in 2008 when Force India was created. I was only working within the confines of the team and at Silverstone, but I went to the British Grand Prix twice as a member of the team with all the access that that comes with. For a fan of the sport, it was a dream come true, and I had my fun.

I have the EM 1ii and iii. They are large compared to the EM5, but so much more negotiable for me compared to my Nikon D 500! There are so many features. I have to learn how to use pro capture. I have not yet used high res. Live comp is outstanding : )))
The functions and features of the Olympus system is one of the main things that keeps me hooked on the brand. There is no other brand out there doing these things and they are just so damned useful. I've used hi-res capture in order to extract a little bit more dynamic range, and it produces very large RAW files so just be aware of that if disk space is a problem for you. 30:21 the EM5MkII you have is fully weather sealed and so its the 12-50 Olympus you have. The EM1 also has a grip extension, so if you take it out it's not much different from your EM5MkII except for the deeper grip and the larger battery. Finally, you did not lose any dynamic range switching from the 5D to the EM5: I have both the EM5MkII and a good old 5DMkII and I can tell you that the difference in low light and in dynamic range is negligible. they are about the same, with the Olympus having a much more ISO invariant sensor if you need to push up the RAW to get some detail in the shadow.
If you pick a 5D MkIV probably the ISO are slightly better but it was not until the R5 that Canon got a serious advantage over OIympus and Panasonic. I have also a canon RP and I can tell you that, while it has better low performances at high ISO, you cannot really recover much form the RAW file in the shadows and especially in the highlights, with the Olympus being much better at that, and the best I have is a Pen F and a GX9, both inferior to the EM1 MkIII in that regard.
I hope the new sensors being announced in days with the WOW camera form OM System and the GH6 from Panasonic will finally close the generation gap with the modern FF sensors we got for some years.
I agree with you regarding the dynamic range, little difference there between the 5D MKii and Em5 MKii or Em1 MKii, but in low light the Canon is much more cleaner. It is just about usable at iso 3200, neither the Em5 MKii nor the EM5 MKii come close, sadly.
@@lensman5762 it depends on which 5D I know for sure that this is not the case for the MKII I have and the MKIII which was criticized for not being an improvement in that regard. The IV/R certainly is an improvement and so was the 6D and to a l'essere extent the 6Dmkll/RP.
Then we have the modern sensors, like the Fuji (XT3 gen) and the Sony/Nikon/Pentax, but only on the last 2 generations, the a7mklll, the z6/7 and the k1X. You can check the side by side comparison made by Rob Trek with the XT30, the RP and the D750 if you want an in depth analysis.
Just keep in mind that all we have in M43 is 2014 technology at best and not even top edge as the Samsung NX was released that year with a fully BSI sensor.

Actually you did not lose any DR compared to your old Canon 5D bodies. Most Canon full frames have lower DR than your E-M1.3 until last year. BTW, that cheap L bracket cannot be tightened properly on your E-M1.3 due to faulty design - it'll twist if you push it with your pinky finger ;) Only those from Promaster (discontinued), Leofoto, Kirk and RRS has the proper molding and therefore hug the bottom of the E-M1 Mk 2/3 tightly without twisting.
I have not been on your channel before but as soon as I started watching this video I thought it is at Cader Idris? Am I right in thinking that? I’m looking at an em5iii or em1iii so if you have any insight to advantages and disadvantages to either that would be helpful.
Hello there. Apologies for the delay in responding. The video was recorded on the top of Holme Fell in the Lake District National Park. Out of the two cameras, I'd choose the E-M1iii every time. The main reason is the all metal body build and, as a pro-spec camera, the level of weather sealing which to me as a landscaper is very important. I've read that the E-M5iii has a more plastic feel, especially the tripod socket on the base. I used an E-M5ii for several years, both for stills and for video and it took everything I threw at it. Hello there, I'm in the middle of a camera crisis. I watch people with aps-c and full frame cameras trash micro four thirds. I feel my choice of camera might be wrong or maybe I'm hearing to much reviews how micro four thirds is insignificant. Personal own the Panasonic G95. I did own a Sony A6400. I fell in love with the A6400 until I was recording during a wedding, but the photos I loved so much. Now my G95 has never overheated durring a hot summer day while I was recording a live event and slap a battery grip on the G95 and I can record for a few hours straight. That's what made me switch to Panasonic g95 because the no record time limit. Do the Olympus cameras have that have no record time limit? Because I would love to have a camera that takes great photos and video, or am I asking for too much? I want to stick with micro four thirds because I invested in several lenses. But the pro lenses are very expensive. This is another thing that troubles me about micro four thirds. Do you have any advice for me?
Hello Justin. Unfortunately I am no expert on video, but I have used an E-M1iii and an E-M5 for video including time lapses and have never encountered an issue or any kind of time threshold. Additionally, I've no idea how many professional film makers use the Olympus system but there are plenty on RUclips. You are right, the PRO lenses are expensive but they are so for a reason - they are built like tanks and have superior quality. I saved up gradually for all my PRO lenses so that I could spread the financial shock, and used consumer lenses like the 12-50 until I'd saved enough. I think the question you have to ask yourself is, "Are you getting the quality and the results you want from your existing setup?" If the answer is yes, then stick with it. If the answer is no, or you are not sure, hire an alternative for a day or so and fill as many memory cards as you can with footage and then compare with what you have. No easy answer, but I hope I've been able to help.
I've been using the Olympus cameras since 2010 and still very happy with it. Please may I ask what brand of L bracket that you use on your OMD MIII as I've had many problems locating a bracket that will fit the body well as using it on my Manfrotto tripod with quick release head.

I am intrigued by Olympus, my only concern, is what the future may hold with the new sale, seems there has not been much new brought to the brand since they took over.
They released a new lens and a new PEN body since the sale. I'm not too worried.
And the cameras are fantastic!

I think at the moment Steve that is a very wise attitude. I think I mention in the video that I am also keeping an eye on what JIP do with the Olympus brand and what their future roadmap looks like. As m4/3rds is the most popular in Japan I am sure that the format has a future - whether it has a future in the rest of the world only time will tell.
OMDS Have just announced 2 new lenses to be released later this year. A 20mm f1.4 Pro & a 40-150 f4 (I think).

Micro four third bodies are geenrally lighter and smaller..
I don’t shoot landscapes with my digital cameras. I shoot wildlife with my EM1x and EM1.2 with the 300 f4 and 40-150 f 2.8 lenses. I have been shooting and posting video and stills on my IG taken with them the last few days. They are light weight and fast and extremely rugged and weather proof. Which is important to me because I am in a rainforest.
I Have Olympus too. For professional photografer Art filter are not pro. I think is you know how to use them you can get good result

I agree in that I don't think that Olympus ever intended the Art filters to be used professionally, however as long as the JPGs are not going to be used for massive prints then the JOG quality is good enough for small scale professional printing. Also there is this new hi-res feature now in Photoshop (which I've not used I should add) that may allow the JPGs to be used more widely for professional applications. For me they are a bit of fun, but they also make me think about creative approaches and whether I should consider them there and then in the field. Stay safe and well.

My problem is a collection of lenses because I cannot make up my mind if I want to do landscape, nature, people architecture or what. Life would be a whole lot simpler, and cheaper and lighter if I could stick to one or the other :)

One of the reasons I use Olympus cameras because they're beautiful to look at unlike those ugly blobs of Canon and Nikon. Also, they're not intimidating to look at when I do street photography

The reason I asked was obviously because you spell Huw the correct way and secondly because Alban is closely related to Aberaeron which was designed and founded in its current form by an Alban and it has an Alban Square at its centre.
@@hedydd2 Ha ha, the "correct" way! I live in England and the number of times that I've had to correct the spelling... My great grandfather Sir Frederick Alban may have had a hand in Aberaeron as he was a very active person getting involved in lots of Welsh community things. I'll ask my father whether he is aware of any connection. You might like to know that there is an Alban clan in the US, centred around Florida. One of them, David Alban, actually came over to the UK about 30 years ago to trace his UK roots. His research revealed that "the Albans" originated in two boys that stole £12 and ran away from Scotland to Wales. In Gaelic, Scotland is "Yr Alba" and as such the boys were nicknamed "the Albans". What was really unreal was that David was an absolute double for my fathers brother. Just as well too as otherwise my Mum would have sent him packing when he turned up cold at the front door and announced himself as "David Alban". I'll let you know if my father knows anything about a connection with Aberaeron. Take care out there.
