I remember footage of RAF combat aircraft in the 1991 gulf war, the TV seemed to show nose art on jet fighters and some transport aircraft from Viz. The Fat Slags, Johnny Fartpants, Finbarr Saunders etc. While the US, aside from some well rendered motifs of flags and eagles had banned nose art, the RAF ground crews went with Viz characters, God knows what the Yanks made of it.
Viz is just sheer brilliance! I've not missed a copy since '85. Gary Bushell the bear and Robin Hood and Richard Littlejohn were my faves. The Tony Parsole articles are just a scream. I even won the defacement competition once with nothing more than a minuscule penis on a picture of Prince Charles! It's a national institution; and I'll always love it. Everything else is just vacuous and devoid of meaning by comparison. Including my missus.
I'm a Yank, but somehow I discovered Viz Magazine about 30 years ago... they had for sale this plaster teeth that had a sign on it "The Queen Mother's Teeth"... and they were all nasty and brown and rotting... I had to call them on the phone to order it... they didn't accept foreign credit cards, and the gal told me she would just send it, and when I got it, I could just mail a check back... I couldn't believe they would trust me, but I got it, and they got their check... and whenever I see it in a newsstand, I always buy it... and all the books... my favorite thing was in a 2018 best of book, the "L.C.M.E. Diet"... less cake, more exercise... I don't get all the references to the Brits they refer to, or some of the expressions and words, but I know they are funny, and that's good enough for me...
To some extent, SOUTH PARK, BIG MOUTH, SAUSAGE PARTY, and FAMILY GUY won't be as popular as much as they are in Britain without Viz. Adult humour in what is fairly children's/kids-oriented stuff always makes me laugh. I remember growing up I always wondered what a Viz comic was like but it was often near the smut section with FHM, Nuts, Zoo so I was worried I'd get into trouble for looking at naughty stuff...20 years later I'm like "what was all the fuss?"
"to bring everyone else down to our level" LOL. i met the viz editors once in 2003 in lord harpole's Rupali curry house when they were judging a curry hell challenge and got my photo taken with them as we shared a beer. great laff.
Chris Donald talks normally! I'm shocked; I assumed he would be a proper Why-Aye-Ha'way-The-Toon Geordie, and that he'd sound like Alan Shearer or somebody.
He has the distinctive accent of the Geordie who made a success of himself and moved to posher surroundings. He had a head start by growing up in Jesmond.
...sad to see Viz not evolving and written by some of the near originals who are now reactionaries. It WAS the cutting edge in the late 80's but everyone has to earn a living.
