It's interesting to revisit older vocabulary once you learn more about grammar. Like, after this I got the 行ってきます card in Anki again and thought "Oh, it DOES literally mean I'll go and come back"

Your videos are fantastic. It makes the book much more understandable.
I like the short version without the chat.
It must be a lot of work to edit them. Thank you for your time and effort.
With the dialogs, it's great having the slower speed speaking followed by normal speed.
Also, colour coding the different parts of the dialog sentences makes them much easier to follow.
Changing the topic slightly. Adding spaces between words would be my suggestion for an introduction to Japanese book, like Genki 1. It would make the Japanese sentences much easier to start reading initially. By the time someone gets to the next book, the spaces wouldn't be necessary.

I love how he actually explains when he doesn’t like something in the text book.
It’s something I always missed in when taught English in school, teachers strictly went by the text book and I was always so confused because the text book had the most unrealistic and unnatural English in history.

  • @globos220

To clarify, Genki presents mottekuru and tsuretekuru as irregular, because kuru itself is an irregular verb. It makes sense to categorize these complex verb as irregular also, since they end with the expected irregular te-form conjugation of kuru (kite and not kute or kutte). The same holds for "to study": noun (study) + suru = to study. Since suru itself is an irregular verb, benkyousuru is also irregular, because it conjugates based on the rules for suru (same logic for "to call" - denwasuru).

I started learning japanese 1 year ago, but I was so inconsistent that I'm still a beginner. I'm currently learning vocabulary with anki and your grammar videos help me a lot with grammar! I'm writing everything you say that I think is important in my notebook to memorize it and I feel like It's working for me. I hope I can understand easy storys and videos soon so I can learn japanese that way. The only language I learned, that I am "fluent" in (depends on what you count as fluent) is english and I achieved that because I started watching english content as soon as I understood the context. I hope I'm able to learn japanese the same way soon. Thanks for your help!

You probably won't see this but, I wanted to tell you how much appreciation I have for the way in which you format these videos, including the website subscriber videos, because they are easy to listen to while driving. There are a lot of nice videos out there, but most require me to have to read subtitles or look at them (because they're not coordinated with Genki) because I don't know the words they're using yet. You explain things in a way that I can understand while watching and taking notes, but also in a way that I can understand while driving and the words that I don't know, you say them and explain them., so I don't miss anything. So, thank you so much. Your work has been a goldmine of help for me!

Andy, the way you explain grammar is brilliant! I am on vacation and started Genki at the beginning of August, and I've just completed Chapter 5 with you. Your videos motivate me to study more because even if I'm tired or not in the mood to learn, I just put your video on and keep going. These are so fun that I forget that I initially didn't intend to learn that much on that specific day.
I loved the examples and the song! Too bad I already remember both Japanese and English lyrics of "Country road" (thanks to a Ghibli movie). But it's so catchy and so much fun! You are the best and your channel needs way more recognition!

The way I remember the Godan conjugation is the ones with a curve from left to right (u, tsu, ru) are itte, the "complicated" looking ones (mu, nu, bü) are nde, su is shite like sushi(te) (the food) and ku is ite while the gu (i + basically the ku with the 2 little lines) is ide (so i + te also with the 2 little lines)

Maybe I am missing something, but it seems like the tense of the te-form when used in a sequence of events changes depending on the context? Sometimes it can turn a verb into "ate" and sometimes it can be used in "go to"? Am I forgetting something obvious or am I correct it's contextual? (sorry if this is explained later in the lesson, still not done yet ha)

12:30 I think Genki made it because tecnically they are irregular because they are Noun Suru Verbs "denwa suru" uses "suru" which is on it self irregular "denwa shite" , i think every verb which is combination of suru or kuru makes it to a irregular verb.
    ChatGPT Answers:
    For Suru:
In Japanese, "suru" (する) is indeed an irregular verb. "Denwa suru" (電話する), which means "to make a phone call," is a compound verb that uses "suru" as its verb component. Because "suru" is irregular, "denwa suru" also follows the same irregular conjugation pattern as "suru."
    For Kuru:
"Motte kuru" (持ってくる) is a compound verb combining the te-form of "motsu" (持つ, to hold or to carry) with "kuru" (来る, to come). While "motsu" is a regular u-verb and "kuru" is an irregular verb, the phrase "motte kuru" behaves according to the irregular conjugation pattern of "kuru."

Thanks very much, Ando-san. This is most helpful.
A quick question if you don't mind. I find that my memorisation of new words for each chapter takes far longer than going over the grammar points and exercises.
Just wondering if a general suggestion is to either:
    1. Keep going through each chapter and learn new words on the background, or
    2. Finish learning new words first before moving on to the next chapter.
    Thanks again.

On my last trip to the USA while in a brewhouse doing Karaoke I was asked if I could sing a song in Japanese, so I sang the "te-form song"... I never told them it was just a verb conjugation, but they loved it. Hey... if you can sell it, then sell it, eh? ;)

Hi, when you mention that you need to replase te for ta and de for da to make the informal version of the te form with the Godan Verbs, is that valid for the Ichidan and irregular verbs?

My Japanese professor showed us the same song too and made us sing it in class 😂

Is 問う yet another irregular? From what I've seen, the te-form of that word is 問うて.

I am currently on page 55 of the Genki workbook
One of the verbs says “to take a shower”
    Is it シャワーを浴びる or 浴びる
    Also
There’s one that says “to make a phone call”
Would that be 電話をかける or かける
    Thanks

    • @ToKiniAndy

For this one you need to keep 電話. For 浴びる, it's pretty much only used with "shower" so it's understood. But かける is used for MANY things.

Ojamashimasu/mashita? That's new for me. Sensei, what about Ittekimase/Itterasshai? Is the latter only used when you are leaving your own house?

The verb song is Country Roads. I see no mention of this.
