In this video, I take you through the steps on how to install a split charge system
If you like my music and would like to hear some on your next road trip, then you can listen to my first album on Spotify here: spoti.fi/2AuT9KK
or follow this link to pick up a physical copy of that album 'Keep On Running' - joeedwards.co.uk/music-store
Also, for a bit of fun, you can watch me whizzing around the highlands on a 1970's moped during the music video for the title track 'Keep On Running' :D : bit.ly/2yZlQz9
Below are some links to both the tools I used to complete the conversion as well as many of the parts used such as hob units, solar panels, split charge relay etc. Let me know if there’s anything else you’d like to know about. They are affiliated links but you won’t be charged any extra for using them, they’ll just allocate a small percentage of the original sale price to the channel which will help to keep projects up and running, thanks in advance for your support and as always, let us know if you have any questions, happy building!

YOU CAN MAKE A SPLIT CHARGER FOR A FEW QUID. These relays can chatter on/off/on/off when the battery is almost full. You do not need such heavy cable either, look at your alternator wires. You can use a standard 30 amp headlight relay (As in my video I posted 4 years ago). My set up cost me nothing and it will work with a smart alternator.
The best video ever on RUclips thanks very much. Good luck with the music 🎶
Thank you so much for taking the time to do such a good, clear and detailed tutorial on this. Subscribed
Thanks Dick, muchos appreciated! :D
A really detailed video, everything I need to add a lesiure battery to my caddy! Many thanks!
This was the most helpful video I have ever watched, absolutely everything explained down to the finest detail, really appreciate this and mine worked first time because of this video.
Thank you man
Ah excellent, good to hear Toby, enjoy your first trip out!
Thank you Joe, great informative video. Very helpful indeed.
Thanks Matthew and thanks for stopping by!
Paul Worthington or Charlie H could do wonders with this character...Hello, I'm bob fleming.

Nice explanatory video.. Thank you.....👏👏☘
Love your videos. Have you made 1 on how to insulate and do the walls?
Great video, nice tunes 👍🏻
Thanks 👍
Hi, thanks for the advices. Greetings from Finland!
Thanks Petri! Hope all is well over there!
@@WoodandWild All is very well. You can also charge your battery in cold water. ruclips.net/video/dOLqY3wqiOk/видео.html
Can you advise why you put an inline fuse from the split charge to the leisure battery aswell as the main battery. Thanks 👍🏻👍🏻😊
Good video, but does a basics Alternater takes the load of two batteries at the same time?thanks
What size lugs do you use on your cables to connect to you split charge and fuses etc
Here we have my vans fucking hell 🤣🤣🤣🤣 sorry but that made my day
Excelente
I see that the split charger is 140 amp, this means that I'm limited to that capacity in my leisure battery, or can I use a 300 Ah leisure battery on it? Nice video
Thank you..
Nice video enjoyed watching, What ampage cable did you use battery to split charger? Thank you
Hey James, I can't remember now off the top of my head, I think it was 110 amp, if you buy a kit they'll def send you the correct size to safe worrying about it! :)
Great Video thanks! What size fuse did you use in the inline fuse holder?
Hey thanks Adam! If I remember rightly they were 125's, if you buy it as a pack they'll be sure to give you the right size!
What amp are the fuses needed fir this please 👌🏽
Hi mate, doing a camper install myself; how do you stop this over-charging the leisure battery?? Does it auto cut off charging when the battery is full?
Thanks mate
Hi, yes, I believe it's what they call an intelligent relay so it will manage the output itself :)
Could you use the same grounding point for the relay as you do for the leisure battery?
Hey Wayne, yes that's no problem!
Did you hook the deep cycle battery to a converter for 230/240v or usb chargers?
Hi Johnog! It's hooked up to a Sargent ec160 so it has a bit of both, you can check it out on the 2nd part of the electrics video 😁
Hey mate , wanna know how did you instal the invertor and all electricity stuff , if u can give me a tips I'll appreciate a lot !
Hey Valdrin, they're should be a couple of other videos on electrics on the channel that will hopefully help but also try Greg Virgoe if not!
Nice tidy work, Ive just put a split charger into mine, got fed up with manually charging the battery after every use, great system! Should of done it ages ago, i put plastic split tubing on my wiring just to make it neat and tidy
hi, I would like to ask you a question, when the duritc is connected but the van engine is off, the red light in the front part, must it remain on or must it remain off and only come on when the van engine is on? Thanks
Hey Filippo, the light should come on shortly after the vehicle has been started, giving the voltage enough time to peak and allowing the unit to split the charge between the vehicle battery and your leisure battery. When you turn the engine off it may take a little while for that spiked voltage to settle back down so you may see the light on for a short while until the voltage reaches 12.65 or less, but for the most part, the light will be off when the engine isn't running, good luck!
AtomicDuck123 thanks million!!
Hi how will the led light go off when we off the car
Hi Asim, it will detect when the battery voltage is at or below 12.65 volts and automatically disconnect, hope that helps!
Why did you not just piggyback your ground to the same point where your starter battery uses to save drilling holes?
Hey Isla Swizzled, it's under a removable shelf so would be a royal pain whenever maintainence is needed
@@WoodandWild Ah okay I see. Nice lil van btw, am enjoying watching it progress
Can I solder instead of crimping ?
Hey Jamie, sorry for the slow reply but yes you can certainly solder and will prob give a more secure fit!
All this finding the right the right size wire for the right battery type is a headache on its own. Not to mention the smart alternator, I dont even know if my car has it or not. They don't know crap at the store itself, they're just there to tell you at what section your product is at.
4:59 if your not making these noises your not working hard enough
